You mean like last year? But UK cut Pope to well below $20mil because they plan on firing him at the end of next season and they don't want him to assemble a roster that could complicate their plans.
Pope had his shot to assemble an expensive roster last year, was my point. I'm sure we're still spending in the top 10, or at least had that much available before all the whiffs.
Okay, I totally agree about last year; they gave him all he needed and he blew it. My point was that, with average NIL going up over 60% and most of the top programs having $20mil or more this year, UK seems to have given Pope less than $20mil this year. If they really wanted him to succeed next year he's have maybe $24mil but they don't want him to do well enough to complicate their retention decision.Pope had his shot to assemble an expensive roster last year, was my point. Pope can handle that not complicating things just fine on his own.Okay, I totally agree about last year; they gave him all he needed and he blew it. It’s absolutely a house of cards waiting to tumble.Unsustainable. Elite football rosters are anywhere from 2x - 5x this, but bring in 10x more revenue than bball. ROI in basketball won't be there for this to continue. IMHO.
I may certainly be wrong, but I suspect big donors who do not get the kind of results they expect will tend to decrease their funding. It’s absolutely a house of cards waiting to tumble.
One we unfortunatly helped perpetuate with the $22M roster of mainly backups we trotted out last year. It’s absolutely a house of cards waiting to tumble.
The only way we get a recruit is to hire their dad or if their brother is on the team. No amount of money could convince one of the top recruits to play for this guy. Time to leave fantasy land and accept reality. He is terrible at his job and needs to be cheering on the team from the stands like the rest of us.Okay, I totally agree about last year; they gave him all he needed and he blew it. If you're talking to me about that you're talking to the wrong person; I never thought he should have been retained and have no expectation that he will turn things around. The only way we get a recruit is to hire their dad or if their brother is on the team. I was actually hoping Goodman was gonna ask how many he thought were 30+, because I’d be willing to bet it’s more than just a coupleDuke with Amazon is $40 + million
There will be for almost everyone not named Duke! There’s gotta be a bubble to this thing eventually
Is that per player.Duke with Amazon is $40 + million
I actually agree with this, it’s only a matter of time before the shine of NIL wears off and donors will want coaches to target certain guys with their donations and if they don’t get them, no more money from them. There will be for almost everyone not named Duke!
I’ve said it multiple times… Rich, deep pocket donors are not going to continue to keep forking over millions of dollars annually, just to watch their team fall short, and with ZERO return on investment!
They’re doing it now because it’s the new “cool thing” to brag about amongst their other rich friends, butt when those bank accounts get lighter and lighter, and there’s still no banners being hung, the wells will eventually run dry, and the current market will correct itself to something more fiscally sustainable.
I doubt it’s the admin, it’s the boosters. Would you give to this cluster? It’s like lighting your money on fire. Especially when they are going to be asked 11 months from now to foot the buyout. If you're talking to me about that you're talking to the wrong person; I never thought he should have been retained and have no expectation that he will turn things around.
But somebody will have to convince me that I'm wrong that the UK admin is knowingly sacrificing a season(like they've done twice in football) and believes that is a smart decision. I also think that they want to make sure Pope doesn't have a chance at a roster that might exceed expectations and complicate their decision.
I'm not convinced because they've done what I alleged twice in football in the last 20 years, once before NIL.I doubt it’s the admin, it’s the boosters. Would you give to this cluster? It’s like lighting your money on fire. Especially when they are going to be asked 11 months from now to foot the buyout.
The problem is the “keeping up with the Jones” effect. Most schools can’t afford to keep accelerating the spending, but they feel like they must to keep up with a few who can. There’s gotta be a bubble to this thing eventually
So they'd rather spend it on his buy out?But UK cut Pope to well below $20mil because they plan on firing him at the end of next season and they don't want him to assemble a roster that could complicate their plans.
You're thinking rationally. I've accused the UK admin of a lot of things in the past but I've never accused them of rational thought. So they'd rather spend it on his buy out?
why would billionaire donors who run all this want this to change? the school ADs and presidents work for them. the NCAA works for the ADs and presidents. its about who wants to spend want nowThere’s gotta be a bubble to this thing eventually
Or use your booster money wisely and call Congress to finally put some reigns on this. Get smart and create a playing field again. The problem is the “keeping up with the Jones” effect. Most schools can’t afford to keep accelerating the spending, but they feel like they must to keep up with a few who can.
With backers like Amazon, there appears to be no end to what Duke can spend. Which puts their rivals in a tough bind, either spend stupidly or let the blue devils run away from the field.
Hasn't been said about me very often either. You're thinking rationally. I've accused the UK admin of a lot of things in the past but I've never accused them of rational thought.
just another example of the basketball leadership and leadership at UK not recognizing what it is. if you want a great roster, you are going to have to spend like it. to think you the NIL landscape this year would be the same last year and you can land a top 10 roster while saving 4M-5M was a gross mistake. playing moneyball out of the gate put us behind the 8 ball. agents just took their clients to the teams that were willing to spend.Okay, I totally agree about last year; they gave him all he needed and he blew it. My point was that, with average NIL going up over 60% and most of the top programs having $20mil or more this year, UK seems to have given Pope less than $20mil this year. If they really wanted him to succeed next year he's have maybe $24mil but they don't want him to do well enough to complicate their retention decision.
but not all of them. every year there will be big/over spenders. like providence who goes out and gets byrd, vaaks, vanterpool, and mack. they might not spend the same next year, but some other team will step up.I may certainly be wrong, but I suspect big donors who do not get the kind of results they expect will tend to decrease their funding.
Might as well at this point. I honestly think this is the boosters thinking. Why throw good money at bad?So they'd rather spend it on his buy out?
Broke clock and all that. lol.Hasn't been said about me very often either.
Perhaps. But who has enough control to make that decision besides Mitch or Eli. And it wouldn’t be them. But UK cut Pope to well below $20mil because they plan on firing him at the end of next season and they don't want him to assemble a roster that could complicate their plans.
People with money enjoy spending that money, especially if they're sports fans and believe their money will bring a title to the university they cheer for. Like Drake, they secretly want to be apart of the team. There’s gotta be a bubble to this thing eventually
