Which of these goes best with red wine?
How about a red 40 colored birch beer on tap at Galloping Hill? Best birch beer also, along with Joes Famous Pizzeria on Springfield Ave in Vauxhall (which also has some of the best pizza).

What’s the famous Italian hot dog place in Newark? That’s the one I haven’t tried but need to. I saw it years ago on one of those food network/travel channel shows.
Dickie Dee's.
Worth the trip and you can also visit the original Calandras Bakery across the street.

Have you ever eaten sliced bread?
lol. Never ate white pizza. I am a traditionalist with some of my junkfood lol. No bacon on my cheeseburger either. Onions and peppers are for sausage and potatoes on the side.

Jimmy Buffs is good but THE BEST hotdogs on the planet were from Galloping Hill Restaurant, 5 points in Union.

However, I say "were" because the cheap owner has recently decided after decades and decades of being the best hotdog ever, to dramatically downgrade the buns (which were exquisite), to basically grocery store quality (garbage). TRAGIC.
To be honest, this place has been bad for at least 20 years. I guess the first time I ever tried it was about 25 years ago and it wasn’t great then, either, so maybe it’s been longer. I lived across the street from one of the former owners for a couple years and I wanted it to be good (although he was out by then), but it just wasn‘t it.

I much prefer a Texas wiener to an Italian hot dog, but if that’s what’s on the menu, I like Dickie Dee’s. My bride prefers Jimmy Buff’s, which is also good, but not quite there for me.

She mortified me by asking for sauerkraut once at Hot Grill. I though we were done.

The hotdogs were still great until recently. I can’t comment on anything else because all I ate there was hot dogs.

Yes! I always get a kick out of the “Rutt’s Hut is the best hot dog place in the world!” noise when it’s not even the best one in Clifton.
It has plenty of other good food and the Ripper may not be the best dog but it is different. Also you can go back in time at Rutts as it has a lot of history and atmosphere. You want great chili, burgers, fries, chops, steaks etc.. AND other food. Try it. It has been around since 1928. My parents went there in the 1940's. Not too many dining places last almost 100 years!

I wonder if Libby's Lunch is still around in Paterson. Went to Hot Grill about 6-7 years ago and it was very good and my body reminded me for at least another day or two - the true sign of success.

Dickie Dee's in Newark is another good one. But at 2 am when the bars closed, JJ's or Eddie dogs were the go to spot.
Met Rick Cerone with Luis Tiant on line at JJ's circa 1980 . Branch Brook Park along Bloomfield ave .
Great memories, nothing like it in Vegas

Jimmy's Roscommon House had great birch beer as well.

I am with you on white pizza and the no-bacon cheeseburger. But never even tasted a Jimmy Buff's? That's some great restraint.

Jimmy Buffs is the original greasy spoon place, and you need to be on heart meds if you go there are you will soon be if you are not! Also make sure you bring Tums along or have Alka Seltzer handy.

But it is great eating!
