Actually, I think it was the other way around. From Mo's coaching record, it looks like he might have been running away from the pink slip from Jackson State. That said, Pope had to hire an assistant by getting their son (outside of the top 100). That might be worse.
Really? Because the team he just left was awful. He has coached for 6 years and never had a team achiev greater than 15 wins in a single season.
I understand that I'm a "chicken-little" or whatever the pumpers want to call me, but I was thinking about some factors that are not helping our recruiting:
-Jason Hart was the head coach at GLeague Unite and former assistant at USC. Alvin Brooks was an assistant at Baylor. Both were probably the most connected assistants for high school recruiting and they just left.
-Mikhail McLean was the only other holdover from the staff who wasn't from Pope’s BYU staff or Mark Fox.
-While Mo Williams is a known name as a player, he was a horrible head coach and has no experience recruiting top talent. I'm pretty sure his best recruit was his son.

What percentage of posters do you think are pumpers? If you had to guess, what percentage of REGULAR posters on this board do you think thought mark pope did a good job this year?
Less than 5%. We all know who they are, but it's best not to name names. Regardless, I know there's going to be some that will bring up advanced stats, Calipari’s flaws, and/or injuries to take up for Pope being a mediocre coach. That's why I went ahead and mentioned "chicken-littles".
Then stokes went public saying uk went all in on his coach. We re a joke and that old fart Eli is going to hire the next AD for the next president. I swear everybody yet university of Kentucky thinks they are some kind of a God I mean what universe should a 78 year-old president of university you know major state university and what world should that man decide or have it have even say, and who is the next athletic Director will be? One most important employees at the university because they oversee massive amount of revenues.
Eli is about to retire. what ego you have to have to go and make a major hire while you’re effectively a lame duck and the position you’re in right now. This man should be let go or he should be handcuffed and should have a hiring committee without him on it.. This whole thing has gone backwards at UK.. generally when guys are at the end of their tenure, you know administrators. They don’t hire new coaches. They either bring a committee or they leave it to their successor. But people would say.” we don’t have a coach”. And I would say there is “nothing wrong with an interim coach while we take our time to find the right fit.” and honestly Pope should’ve been an interim hire. Or even better Pitino should’ve been a head coach and Pope and assistant coach if he wanted to coach at Kentucky.. run those programs out west in Utah. It’s nothing like running an SEC program..
When you have old administrators, you deal with them first you get them worked out with new hires than you let them bring in their own people. In a functional environment that happens because you don’t have an athletic Director and a university president general to where both are ready to retire at the same time but this is the hubris that both of operate with UK. Which is why we need someone from the state to run the school and ideally someone from the state to run or someone from our athletic programs in the past to run our athletic department now.. we need people in power positions we can trust and know, they’ll always do. What’s in the best interest for university in the state of Kentucky. Tuscaloosa raised president and Oregon st created AD. Oregon State would do real well and the SEC..

I don't believe I've seen anyone say he did a good job last season. His first season...yes. Last year was really a mess in so many ways. And I'm not a "pumper", but I believe deserves a third year. If he has an awful year next season, it's time for a change.
A few days before his Kansas announcement, Stokes was on an IG live with a few Mich St players and was bringing up how Pope was trying to hire Jamal Crawford as an assistant (presumably to get Stokes to sign). At the time, it could either be interpreted as Stokes laughing at Pope's desperation, or something legit. Of course, with how everything panned out, we know Stokes was mocking Pope.
WOW! And he said that? Goodness gracious we are in a hot mess. Stokes seems like a punk too. Fits perfect with Kansas.
What’s the point of another year if the outcome is inevitable? He is the worst recruiter I’ve ever seen and that’s not going to suddenly change. I don’t want an average program winning 62% or whatever games. That’s not the Kentucky I grew up loving.
Agree Stokes fits the Kansas image way better than UKs, but unfortunately Pope desperately needed that recruiting win for perception and to have something to pitch to blue chippers in future cycles. He made all his roster moves with Stokes in mind and got burnt. Pretty dire situation, as you said.

Because it's not inevitable. That's the point. It's your opinion. To fire a coach after one bad season doesn't make sense and would make it very tough to hire a good coach in the future.
You have to take into account the trajectory. Like recruiting. Clyde was gone after 2 years and we got Cal.

But Clyde had NO good years. Did have returning players and was a drunk. Pope had a much better year than expected in year one and a much worst than expected season in year 2, but Kentucky still went to the NCAA tournament both years. Year 3 is going to say a lot.
I won't be shocked if we go in down a coach. No one wants to coach for a lame duck for a single year.
Clyde was both bad AND a raging alcoholic AND doing inappropriate things on campus. Huge difference.
