And there is no WNBA for Clark without the women that came before Clark.

I said before Clark put eyes on the league, but the people now getting their commercials have earned them by their own merits. Not because of Clark.

And like I also said, if it was just about Clark why aren't only Clark's games televised? People are coming to watch the league and a lot of them aren't Clark fans.. some are even sick of the Clark fans.
It would be pretty silly to only show Clarks games. She has to play someone. There have to be rivalries. Why are ALL of Indiana's games on some national TV platform, and no one elses are even close. And for the record I NEVER said it was all about Clark, but surely you can see how much ALL of this has changed in the last 2+ years? What happened 2+ years ago for the W? Why was the WNBA draft NEVER televised before 2 years ago?

She almost had a double double (8 points 7 rebounds and 3 steals) in 13 minutes.

These tweets are so disingenuous.
Scoring 8 points doesn't mean much when you shoot 2-7 from the field and 4-8 from the free throw line. She's obviously an elite rebounder.

This is the conversation though. What kicked it off was someone saying Azzi Fudd whould thank Clark for her contract.

Fudd earned her contract.
Im guess the point people are trying to make is that before the new contract rookies were making 70K per year. Would they have been able to negotiate the new TV deal without the huge uptick of attention on the W in the last two years. Why did many WNBA teams move to larger arenas when the Fever came to town. Who was responsible for that? Angel Reese, No. Not even The MVP of the league with the Aces drew that kind of attention.
I think most people get ESPN and ESPN2.
Really. No wonder their ratings have gone to heck for some time. Must not have been destination TV until 2 years ago.

I understand what they're getting at. We don't need to do that for every single woman that gets a new contract because it diminishes what they did to earn it.

if Clark didn't cause this then why was attendance at big name teams not called Fever only a few thousand fans, while Fever was selling 15-20 thousand even on road games? Yes new contacts were earned by the players (most of them anyway). However, Clark opened up the money spicket for everyone.

Nobody is saying that Caitlin has not had an impact.

Its when people frame it as all Caitlin it gets stupid.

Nobody is going to show up night after night, year after year, to watch Caitlin on the court by herself.

What big name teams only averaged a few thousand fans?

I explained why they were "losing money."
Owners pocketing money.

So, WNBA teams were profitable, all on their own?

The linked story that follows includes numbers based on previously audited league financial information.

And to be completely clear, I think NIL did just as much heavy lifting as Clark did. Clark wouldn't be nearly as popular without her being in every other commercial her Jr/Sr years. The players didn't have those opportunities the 28 years before her.

You got this wrong, too.

People who had never watched women's basketball before were suddenly tuning in because of this "Caitlin girl playing at Iowa." Clarks' popularity started in 2023 because of Caitlin's play (her logo threes, her incredible passing, etc) and her taking "little old Iowa" to the Final Four.

When Caitlin became incredibly popular BECAUSE OF HER PLAY, the endorsements quickly followed.

Nor did ANY of them Man or Woman score just short of FOUR thousand points, lead the nation in scoring three years, and was second the only other year. OH, and she led the nation three of four years in assists and was second the other year. The ONLY woman to lead the nation in points and assists in the same season, (and she did it three times). ONE male did that ONCE. ONLY player to score over 3000 points and have over 1000 assists. Holds SIXTY FOUR NCAA or B1G conference records. SIXTY FOUR. OH, and she sold out every areana Iowa played in home or away, and brought MILLIONS of $$ to the University, Iowa City, and Iowa as well as many other the opponenets schools as a whole. THATS why she was (and is) on TV all the time. Your saying that Fudd deserves to make more or the same as Clark? That's insane....

@AFM22 definitely has some insane takes....

Relax, no one is denying she's a great player.

What I'm saying is players like Candice Parker, Britney Greiner, Sabrina Ionescu.. many more great players who didn't get NIL. They could have all had major deals like Clark and brought a following to the WNBA.

Clark came along at the right time.

You know, if you are going to bring up former & current players and want to to be taken seriously, you might want to spell their names correctly.

Not getting NIL had nothing to do with why people were not tuning in to watch players like Britney Griner.

He can see it , he’s just an asshat that loves to get you guys all worked up and it seems to work every single time!!! Nobody, and I mean nobody could be as clueless as he portrays. Absolutely no reason to respond to anything that he posts.

And the fact that Fudd's partner (Paige) plays for the Wings helped Fudd get drafted #1 overall by Dallas.

They earned their contract. They should thank CC for the value/amount of that contract.

Do you seriously believe WNBA players would be making the salaries they're now making without the popularity, attention, media, revenues, etc. that CC has brought to the league?

I think we’ve all agreed that Clark had an impact but they don’t need to thank Clark.

this is a real Iowa issue where Iowa fans think everyone needs to bow down to Clark, they don’t.

They'd be making $75,000 a year without CC. They're making 5-10x that because of CC. They should thank her for that.
They should also thank the big TV deal they got and also the owners overplaying their cards by selling their teams for hundreds of millions when they said for years they were losing money.
