I guess if she did a crappy job in the portal but as of right now you are upset because she doesn’t like it enough in your opinion.
Seems Jimmy Fallon GIF by The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon
She got one of the top 5 players in the portal and that isn't good enough. Then add Whiting and the small forward from Georgia...and whomever else commits down the line. Fans, man.

If I'm a basketball coach, I think my favorite part of that job would be coaching basketball. That's me anyway. I know some of you might prefer talking to agents and haggling with families over playing time, but please recognize that you are probably a very odd and small minority. Embrace what you love. Give well-wishes and cookies to the players you developed, talk to agents at all hours, reassemble a team with your budget, work the numbers(!). Have fun.

I'm going to be over here helping with footwork and press breaks.
Actually the best part is building relationships with the kids and helping them be the best people they can be.

Is my comment from over 24 hours ago still causing you discomfort? You guys are very sensitive. It wasn't a comment about results on the Portal, it was about the way Jan expressed herself, showing she don't like the Portal. Of course, Dani Carnegie is a huge win. And Lasondra played a decisive role in that, like she did with Chit Chat. And this has nothing to do with my comment about Jan not liking the Portal. You guys are very dramatic, any comment becomes: you're saying my coach's work is garbage. Either we say everything is perfect and only praise everything, or we're labeled as haters who think everything is garbage. 8 or 80. Zero tolerance for nuances diversity of opinions.

Nope. My back causes me discomfort, though.

whole lot of whiney little girls on this thread.
Jan has done fine. The pieces we have in place and the new additions will be miles ahead of what we lost in the portal.
FFS some of you guys are insufferable.
I'd struggle to come up with a single portal loss that is better than any player that was gained. Carnegie and Whiting are both ranked much higher than anyone including Deal and the biggest difference between Deal and Faison's freshman years might just be the minutes they were on the court. Huge plus in the portal this year.

You might want to reconsider insulting people by calling them girls. This is a women's basketball thread after all.
Small-dicked losers is more on the mark.

Iowa signed two high-level players and one role player. One of the 10 players All SEC who has everything it takes to be one of the best to ever wear the Iowa jersey. Just remember that Hannah, Kylie, McCabe, Jada, Mallegni, Deal, Rodriguez, Johnson, and Levin left. In terms of quality there's no comparison. Dani Carnegie and Amari Whiting are excellent. The only issue is losing nine players, which leaves us without depth, but I believe there's still time to resolve that.

That's true, however it's also worth noting that only 3 of those 9 players that are now gone played any meaningful minutes down the stretch, and 5 of them never played any meaningful amount of minutes at Iowa period. The roster currently sits at 9, and there really aren't any back benchers like they had coming into last season. It would be nice to add another higher quality reserve, but it's more likely that whomever else is added ends up playing very little when it counts.

We lost three starters [Kylie, McCabe and Hannah], a 5-star recruit [Deal] who many believed would be a starter but ended up being the sixth player. We lost a transfer that was a big investment [Rodriguez] who could have been a starter, but it didn't work out. We lost a player who could have been a sixth player [Mallegni] but had injury problems. Depth is important for several reasons, including because things don't always go exactly as planned. It's important to have plan B, plan C, plan D...

I haven't followed your overall postings enough to draw any conclusions about how fair or unfair you have been in your assessment of Jan Jenson, but I think what’s riled people up is that you’ve done what many habitual critics do -- take a single comment or moment from Jan and elevate it into a sweeping indictment of her coaching ability.

In this case, it centered on her comment about not being a fan of the portal -- a view echoed by plenty of successful coaches. And it came despite what’s shaping up to be a strong portal cycle, with additions like Carnegie, Whiting, Faison, and likely more on the way. It also ignores the broader context of the interview, where Jan clearly outlined how the program is working to succeed in the portal -- the very approach you seem to be calling for.

So, I think this was a poor argument. That’s not a judgment of you as a fan, and it’s not to say Jan shouldn’t be critiqued when it’s warranted. It just means that, in this instance, the case you made leans into the kind of split-hair, find-fault-in-everything approach that’s become all too common on this board. At times, it feels like if a tree fell in the forest with no one around, we’d still see posts blaming it on something Jan did -- or didn’t do. And I think a lot of posters have grown wary of that find-fault-in-everything style, which is why they tend to get defensive when they see it.

To be clear, I’m not opposed to fair criticism of the team, the coach, or their performance. The way the season ended -- the blowout loss to UCLA, the embarrassingly close win over Fairleigh Dickinson, and the home loss to Virginia -- gives plenty of legitimate grounds for scrutiny and raises fair questions about how the program approaches the stretch run. But that’s a separate discussion. When it comes to the portal, it’s hard to see how any reasonable observer wouldn’t be encouraged by how things are unfolding.

While I agree that depth is important, the performance of the top 9 will always determine next year's success. If you're having to rely on 10-12 for anything more than token minutes you're already losing.

Not necessarily. If we go back to the chat from a year ago, fans would have ranked Journey Houston as the 10th or 11th player, and she ended up being our 6th player, even starting a few times. And she was quite useful. Emely Rodriguez, who many said would be a starter, had a lost season, and Deal, who many expected to be a starter, wasn't. Six players were injured and missed games, some missed the rest of the season. That's it. The season is unpredictable, so it's important to have several options for each unexpected situation that can happen.

I pretty much agree, but... Will players past the top 8 make a difference? Let’s look at last season. Through the first seven games last season, Journey Houston only cracked the top-8 in minutes played once. Here are the rounded off numbers for minutes played the first eight games, starters (S), and where Journey ranked among minutes played in each game.

DISCLAIMERS: There could be errors in any of the above, but it is close to correct. I often don't know what I am talking about. I feel right at home on this forum.

Right. Over the course of the season, once you get beyond the top 9 players, they typically only play extended minutes in blowouts or under extraordinary circumstances as was the case in these games. Iowa won't enter the season with 9 players, but 10-12 won't play in too many competitive situations.

Freshmen are definitely a wildcard and the season is unpredictable, but Journey was no worse than the 7th or 8th best player on the team all season. Once she proved her worth that's what her minutes reflected. If you look at the bottom 4 or 5 players on the team, they simply didn't play meaningful minutes.

I'm not talking about what she was like throughout the entire season. I'm talking about what people were saying about her before the season started, trying to predict how the season would be, which is what some are trying to do again. Before the season started, Houston was ranked by fans as the 10th or 11th player on the team, and that could happen again. The 10th player on the team, who hasn't even joined the team yet and who some are saying doesn't matter much because she'll hardly have any PT, could end the season being our 6th player, exactly as happened with Journey Houston. And that wouldn't necessarily be a bad thing. It's very difficult to predict what a season that hasn't even started yet will be like, when the team isn't even complete yet. We can't be sure about almost anything right now, so it's wise to have several options available for different and unexpected situations.

Technically not in the portal but class of 2026 decommitment from Long Beach St due to coaching change. National leader in made 3's; wonder if she can play any defense.

Suspect Alabama will get 1st crack at her if they have roster room and NIL left to entice her.
Alabama may have tapped Wright for this reason to bring her along just like Jan did with Coach Boogie and CCW.
However, it does say her recruitment is open.

Yesterday Amy Wright resigned as WBB Head Coach at Long Beach State to join Alabama's coaching staff.

I merely replied as soon as I read your post. I am not in control of the placement of posts. Have great day. I believe Lisa Bluder recruited her as she was Addie O’Grady’s teammate. But Iowa could not match Stanford’s incentives $$$$.
Lisa tried to recruit her, but she was the first one of the "not that school" crowd after the CC22 vs Angel finals dust up.

Dude, they're going to add a few players. I would love to see a power forward that can play the 5 if necessary, but the important pieces are already in place. Expect any additional players to look more like the ones that left.

Some Hawkeye podcast on YT.
Kach opinions are interesting. She thinks Amari Whiting will be a starter because she's taller and a good defender, and Stremlow will be our 6th player coming off the bench playing a lot of minutes. And that Journey Houston will be a starter at the 4, unless Woliczko makes an immediate impact playing as elite 5-star recruit since the first training.
