Big congrats to Drake assuming he takes it.

One thing I raised my eyebrows at was the fact he spent last week coaching many Iowa recruits at the U.S. Open. Hopefully the lines of communication were open about the subject with Tom and Terry otherwise I could see how that might rub them the wrong way.
As long as he doesn’t use his connections to try to flip them to ISU. I know Bachmans visit ISU, but not sure about the other guys.

I guess this is meant for me so….

Who would you want to be #4? Warner’s a 4x AA, finalist, and can roll with our bigger guys. He's a Hawk who stuck around after graduating and worked with a bunch of guys. This included Buchanan. IMO, the only other guy in the Hawk orbit was Buchanan himself and he is focusing on competition through 2028.

Fair enough, but this is a coach that brings nothing new other then the rolling around aspect, if Bobby was bad in that respect,he should have been gone along time ago.Warner brings the same style we saw this year, low scoring, limited offense.

Nice guy, check
Charles Matthews cheerleader type check
Loyal check

I think if we are at the point no one wants to be a 4th at Iowa we are in really big trouble.

If true, at least we know ISUs light weights won't be good at scrambling or have any top game...

They knew Drake was going to be gone by the time they entered college and had zero thoughts about him being their coach. Him being at ISU won't affect anything from those previously committed to Iowa.

I’m about as spiteful a person as you’ll meet, but even I wish Drake well at ISU. That all changes though if he starts talking crazy about Iowa, but I think he’s too good of a person to do that.
It'll be interesting to see how our coaches handle this over the next year or two. If ever there was a former wrestler that deserves to be treated respectfully for pursuing his coaching dream elsewhere, it's Drake.

Someone from outside the Hawk orbit is what most were hoping for. Nothing against JW but more of the same isn't the fix the program needs.

Animosity among coaches is usually the result from negative recruiting. IF this is done then all bets are off on how everything is handled. Things that are said on the mat during the heat of the action are quickly forgotten.

Didn't Spencer Lee's dad have to point out to Brands Bros the amount of negative recruiting that was going on against them....and they had no clue because they didn't pay attention to the noise (paraphrasing)?

I think the Brands view any sort of "if you're not at Iowa, you're against us" mentality which has led to a lot of former Iowa wrestlers on the outside looking in...even if they did nothing wrong other than pursuing a career vs. treading water waiting patiently for a chair to open up at Iowa.

I will say that I would be very interested in what transpired between Brands and DSJ....as he very much seems to loathe the Brands brothers.

Only the saddest, most pathetic people would have disdain for any wrestlers of the program that leave to join the coaching ranks elsewhere to provide for them and their families.

Metcalf, St John, Ramos, Borschel were all wrestlers and national champions for Iowa and will always be more hawkeye than any fans (non-wrestlers). The disdain the brands loyalists have for the guys that put Brands on the map is incredibly stupid. Tom doesn’t own Iowa wrestling - he is simply the steward of a program rich in history and one in need of change.

Animosity between Brands and former Iowa wrestlers who have taken coaching positions elsewhere is not anything like you are describing.
I know for a fact Tom had a long discussion with Dresser promoting Metcalf as a coach prior to him being hired at isu.
He knew Metcalf could get a better payday at isu compared to the Olympic training center.
Plain and simple DSJ is a douche with a chip on his shoulder. He has always been this way and always will be.

Oddly enough, the Iowa HC and head assistant could be described the same way.

Anyone with half a brain knows there is a reason for the animosity. I’m sure it’s totally normal for most programs to have bad blood between head coaches and star athletes like Metcalf, borschel, st john, Ramos, Gilman, zadick. Two of those guys even gave up a year of their eligibility for their coach.

My lasting memory of DSJ will be quitting on the team after his loss in the winner's bracket as a senior.

St Louis???

And regarding the talk of Gilman to ISU..
there's no way in hell those two personalities could co-exist for very long.

DSJ as a senior lost in the quarters to Realbuto, win his round of 12 match, won his next match, lost to Ian miller in the consi semis and won by Med ff, in the 5th place match. Not sure where you get quitting on the team.

Are you referring to Marinelli in 2021, after his loss in the quarters, to Griffith and defaulting out in the round of 12, I believe with a cracked rib?

I believe it was Oklahoma City
I can't see Gilman getting offered a position at isu.
He's just rubbed too many people the wrong way over the years.

If Gilman got a job there I would hope they play the old fight night video on the Jumbotron before the dual where Gilman went and said the other coaches wish they could still be at Iowa. Hell maybe just play it on there anyways for the next ISU dual.

I’ve never claimed to be smart, just smarter than you. If being “informed“ means jock sniffing a coaching staff and defending them at every move then thank the Lord I’m not “informed.”

This is another chance for you to set the record straight but you won’t, because you can’t.

What are your thoughts on Spencer Lee or Angelo Ferrari? Both finished lower than the year you're referencing.

Jock sniffing?? I don't know what kind of kinky stuff you are into, but there isn't any jock sniffing going on here, you sicko.
I haven't "defended" anyone and what record do I need to set straight?

Drake to ISU is such a weird hire. I like Drake, don't get me wrong, but a guy who hasn't done anything at the international level and who lost to ISU's 133 pounder whose most recent NCAA finish was R12 is now coaching their guys? Is he going to be that guy that young blue chippers are going to want to go train with? I don't get it, but maybe if they get enough Iowa guys in their room they'll eventually turn it around. Lol. They'll definitely up their slide-by game.

Is Ayala’s career really all that different than St John, or Warner, or MorningStar, or Jimmy Kennedy, or Cody Sanderson, or Kemmerer, etc etc etc. To pretend that a two time NCAA finalist isn’t qualified to be a college coach is a crazy level of spin to try to create a narrative.

Can they though?
I don’t think the athletic department would fight them too hard if asked to not take their scheduled raise for next season and create the spot with that money. They could supplement with HWC funds like they do the 4th assistant job.

Especially since lots of sports are adding someone in similar roles due to the NIL era.

Well if nothing else I guess this'll keep Ayala safe from certain fans going through his garbage and posting his bank records online. Lol.

Also, weren't you ISU fans mocking the hiring of Warner not long ago?

Why do I have to speak for all ISU fans? I post plenty and my opinions are my own. You won’t find me mocking the hire.

So, you’re basically just admitting that you’re tearing down Drake because you don’t like ISU and in reality Drake is just as qualified a wrestler as many, many other coaches at programs better than ISU.

Should we be worried about the close relationships that Drake has with the 2027 class?

Nonetheless, wish Drake the best. Was a great ambassador for Iowa, I’m sure he will be missed in IC! Wish we could’ve kept him.
