The Hawks Would Be Crazy Not to Snatch Up a Portal QB

Jimmy Sullivan was a Jon Budmyer recruit who could not even beat out a walk-on to be Iowa's scout team QB this year. I wouldn't hold out too much hope on him contributing any more than all the other Budmyer recruits did.
Lester likes J Sully, which is what matters. Plus, there are 3 scholarship QBs remaining on the roster for the spring, not 2 like you claimed, plus a 4-star recruit joining in the fall and the three-Star walk-on. It might be nice to pick up a portal QB, but it isn’t a priority. There are bigger needs.

Just so I get this straight...

Does the OP want us to spend money on backup QBs hoping that one could be a starter? The argument was thay we have 2 on the roster (but have 5 that may likely flip to 4.)

I don't care if we send out feelers to Manske with no promises to have him start but I don't think we offered Smolik out of HS, did we?
The concern is the Hawks do not currently have a starting Big 10 caliber QB on the roster, just a couple Brendan Sullivan caliber guys (i.e. backups on most rosters).

Because Lester is clearly the QB whisperer. After all, he led Iowa to the nation's 129th ranked passing offense this year with a $2,000,000 portal QB, and the nation's 130th ranked passing offense last year. What is it, exactly, that Lester has done to prove he, like Budmyer, is a QB whisperer? It would seem there are over 120 offensive coordinators who are better judges of QB play and QB recruiting, no?

It is going to be interesting to see who gets left out in the cold. There are some solid QBs left in the portal, and I do wonder if Iowa is hanging around waiting to get a deal. Going off of the on3 transfer portal rankings no particular order

1.) Raiola (seems like Miami or Oregon backup plan)
2.) Lagway (who the hell knows, Virginia?), Not sure why Ashton Daniels committed to FSU without knowing
3.) Chiles (Nebraska?, LMFAO what a catastrophe)
4.) Pribula (honestly thought he was VT bound, not the case)
5.) Colandrea (dude could be a monster in Iowa's offense)
6.) Stokes (If Iowa can't beat out Oregon State, or App State we have problems)

Unknowns (all of the potential to be Malachi Nelson types)
1.) Deuce Knight
2.) Aaron Philo (looks like a Gronk Clone, not quite Colton Joseph)
3.) Bryce Baker
4.) Austin Novosad
5.) Air Noland

After the dismal QB play in the spring game and very little hope that Iowa's QB room will suddenly rise up and play like Big 10 QBs, you really have to question Kirk's portal strategy here. I mean, I know QB whisperers Budmyer and Lester have a tremendous track record of coaching up mediocre QBs like Hecklinski and Brown into great ones...oh wait, they don't?

Yup, probably should have listened to IowaLaw and thrown some money at a proven QB with starting experience if the team wanted a shot at a playoff birth. But hey, there's always next year, right? Count on plenty of 3 and outs with runs up the middle for 2 yard gains this year.

And quit patting yourself on the back about getting a portal QB as a lot of people said the coaches should at least explore the idea.

I hope the run game is really good again and receivers are better so the QBs can get it done.

But if the starting QB isnt getting it done lets go to option #2 rigth away and not do a deacon hill repeat

Taking much stock in a spring game is all we need to know that you don't know much about football. The game plan was to pass, get the QB reps, WR reps, and DB reps. No run was established so it was easy for the defense to know what was going to happen. August is when things need to be taken seriously.

I wish your last sentence were true….but The Captain will stick with whoever is named Q1 through thick and thin. 😎 Unless Q1 is carted off in a wheelchair, I highly doubt we will see Q2 get significant minutes during the season….😉

Let me see:
A. Trust the man who has led Iowa to 13 straight BIG winning seasons behind only OSU.

B. Trust an anonymous know it all random poster on a message board who has never donned a jock in his life?

Gee..tough choice but I am going with the first option.

See you after the first loss this upcoming season, as you won't be posting again until then.
