Why Did Emmett Johnson of Nebraska Fall to the 5th Round?

I am not Mel Kipper or anybody likethat, but he seemed to me like one of the best backs in the Big 10 last year and a lot closer to the first round than the 5th. Does anybody know why?

Perhaps I am still too traumatized still by that 80-yard end-around that he pulled on us early in last year's game, but I think my opinions are more based on the entire season's body of work. I thought he was among the top three backs in the Big 10. Not only could he run, but his receiving seemed pretty good too.

Any Husker fans care to comment?

and FWIW, no,I am not a closet Cornhusker.

Could be size - 5ft10 205.

Johnson won POY as a prep in Minnesota, rushed for 2500 yds and 42 TDs as a senior. It was curious to me why the Gophers (or Iowa) never offered. Assumed there were character questions.

In any event, he proved he can succeed in major college football. 1st Team AA, B10 RB POY. Dude runs with a purpose, tough as nails, elusive moves, YAC master.

So…. Smaller RB, not a speed demon, basically a 3rd down back? Whatever the reasons, I think he sticks as a primary backup RB…..a player the Chiefs need.

Because the RB position is massively undervalued. I kid, sort of. People freaked out when Love from ND went 3rd and is now the 7th highest paid RB and hasn't played a game in the NFL.

There were 13 RB's taken in this years draft including only three in the first 3 rounds.

I'm not sure being drafted in the 5th round is "falling". He's a good player and will get his shot.

He probably tired of the rigorous academic schedule that the Lil Debbie football team maintains.

The NFL realizes that Nebraska is a **** state, with a **** athletic program and a dogsh!t football program. Therefore no Nebraska player is even worthy of a thought until day 3.

oh and f**k Nebraska

I think he is a good RB and will surprise many in the NFL.

That said, him going in the 5th round is not near the surprise that Love going with the overall 3rd pick was.

Since 2020, who picks a RB in the top 5 anymore?
Yeah, I suspect Johnson is going to do pretty well in the NFL.

I’m not a husker fan, but I think he went someone later in the draft due to concerns about his blocking ability and perhaps pass catching ability?

This always makes me laugh. Iowa and Nebraska are essentially the same damn state. Many families co exist between the two states. The bonds between the two states, culturally, is enormous.

But because the fan bases of the two flagship schools of the state dont like each other, we all pretend like the states are wildly different...

agree but that probably adds to the contempt and intensity in games. i’ll be the first to admit ne’s addition to the b1g has generated a bona fide rivalry that both fanbases need and enjoy

Looked it up because I thought Jeanty was top 5. He wasn't, he went 6th. The answer is zero RB's in the top 5 since 2020.

Also, only 6RB's have gone in the 1st RD since 2020.

Because his head coach doesn't know how to develop a winning culture, with winning habits and winning attitudes. Just look at Dylan Raiola.

I don't think Nebraska has enjoyed it very much the last 10 years. :)

Cannot disagree with you.
Altho culturally, Nebraska is even more conservative than Iowa and in that regard was more like Kansas,Oklahoma, and Texas
That's fine, adds to the BIG mix.
I happened to check out husker message board and saw you putting up a good fight vs some race supremists on that board
I doubt you would find a thread like that on this board with such open racism ....probably a outlier ...hope so anyway. Good on you tho.

That thread is...not our proudest moment as an online fan base. Great to hear outside observers are witnessing our shame too. 😬

Its an unfortunately large number of posters on the free board. I will say the paid board was far less racist...if that counts for anything.
