Found this link about the increase of international flow of both men and women basketball which is setting records. It demonstrates the rapid growth of the sport worldwide but is especially impacting the NCAA programs. The international flow into the NCAA D1 basketball has doubled the last few years to almost 900 international men basketball players coming into NCAA programs. Almost 80% of men’s D1 basketball programs have at least 1 international player now. The international pro programs are growing too, but NIL is pushing the interest of international players in NCAA programs. Not sure how the NCAA is regelating these college transfers. Programs probably need staffing hires just to do the paperwork. Lots of film to review as well for recruiting.

As with international students, it all depends on what the school is going for. If the politics requires everyone to be home-grown, there's that. But if the goal is excellence, then you want to recruit from the largest qualified pool - which in both academics and sports includes a lot of international candidates.

Over the years I’ve been impressed by foreign students in the academic settings I’ve been involved. Even in high school the exchange students we had from Italy and Germany were top-notch. The basketball players from abroad seem to be older, more mature, well-seasoned in the sport and more proven and less risky than recruiting a US player just graduating from high school. It would be of interest to know more about tthe academic strength of international transfer players though many are graduate students so I’m assuming their academic backgrounds are strong. There’s definitely a trend towards international transfers though some high profile NCAA D1 coaches have expressed misgivings and concerns about the impacts on young US high school players finding slots as recruitment of international players trends upward.

The Cats should have stayed at the forefront with this, or at the very least, revived it when NIL came into play...

Why are we always two steps behind everyone? It feels like we are always reacting to what has already happened vs leading.

I believe most international students find the curriculum in American universities relatively easy. That is, if they are decent students at home.

Having said that, it's not necessarily easy for them to do it. There's the language issue that, even if they have a decent grasp of, still makes it harder to function. What should take 1 hour of studying, easily takes 5. Learning curve for sure.

At NU that probably matters, a lot. At some other colleges, probably not.

So do the guys we have such as Ghai count or because they are already in states and going through US High Schools make them not International transfers?
