We are in great shape heading into the final 3 weekends (vs #3, #4, and #5 rpi teams) to grab a national seed. With a great showing we will threaten a top 3 overall seed.

Quick analysis (assuming win over Nichols)

7-2: Top 4 RPI
6-3: Top 5 RPI
5-4: Top 7 RPI
4-5: Top 10 RPI

I would say we’re in a really good spot to host if we get three more SEC wins. We are gonna have to probably win about 5 more SEC games to be a Top 8, which would require winning a couple of these series or sweeping someone.

Southern Miss and Oregon State have really bad schedules down the stretch. They will win games, but these sub-200 games that Oregon State is going to have to play is going to kill their RPI. That's 2 spots that we will just take by playing three top five teams.

I wouldn't call it "great shape", I would stick with optimistic. McPherson still out and won't be throwing 75 to 100 pitches when he does eventually come back, Vilas had his worst outing of the year this past weekend , Billingsley has 2 bad outings in a row and didn't record an out last night but gave up 2 hits a run and a HBP, we are weak at shortstop in fielding and hitting, we are weak at catcher fielding and hitting, Chance batting avg has dropped from .400+ a few weeks ago to .350, and like you said we face #3, #4, #5 RPI's in the coming weeks and combined 97-29 records. I'm naturally pessimistic though so we'll see how it falls out.

Add USC & Nebraska to this list
USC has series vs Rutgers (127) & Nevada (126) plus Oregon (26)
Nebraska has series vs Ohio State (115), Iowa (72) , & Minnesota (79)

I also have to think that Georgia will be ahead us in the seedings despite being 19 in the RPI currently.

We just cannot have another Georgia/Tennessee two week disaster

I think we’ll be ok. My prediction 4-5 (which is pretty dang good vs 3 top 5 teams with 2 series on the road). We host but barely miss out on a top 8 seed. Tennessee series comes back to haunt us.

Compared to where we were two weeks ago we are in great shape. 45 games into the season our BA and ERA are still top 2 in the SEC overall and top 3 in conference only. Our hitting has improved in the last couple of weeks and we are now seeing more hits with RISP. Last night Milewski actually threw a runner out at second, and had 3 hits. Yes we have challenging schedule the rest of the way but that also gives us a great opportunity. We beat a top 20 team on a neutral site last night. Meanwhile, our opponent this weekend gave up 14 runs to the #165 RPI team at home and had to score 3 runs in the bottom of the ninth to win. Had they not gotten 10 freebies they would have lost. Everybody has their struggles.

You could have left that last sentence out… trust me we could tell from the rest of the post that you are pessimistic.

4-5 would be pretty good. I think I'd put the over/under at 3.5. We should be able to win 2 against Auburn and go 1-2 at UTex and at A&M. But it's definitely not easy or a given. But the way we've played everything close (for good and bad) I would not be shocked by 2 win or 6 wins.

What about the SECT? Do we not have a chance to help our host/national seed case by winning a couple of games there? Of course, I'm assuming we get a bye, or a double bye, so winning a couple gets us to the semis or better (I think) in the new format.

Every word is the truth though.............
No doubt… but as you suggested, it’s certainly a glass half empty view. Even with all the negative you mentioned, we are still on a nice little win streak. The bullpen is seemingly getting a little more reliable, ace is starting to hit the ball hard again. So there are definitely negatives but the fact that we keep finding ways to win is impressive and says something about the team. I get the competition is about to step way up but there are certainly positives to point to as well.

Yup.

But guess what, they're all about to play one of the best in all categories in the league as well...

Yeah, I think our offensive stats in conference are a little misleading. We didn’t get to LSU pitching until they were completely out of gas which came early b/c they were down a starter. Before that we scored 5,2, and 3 runs on Sundays. We have gone through some really tough stretches and its very arguable we lose Sunday at SC and Friday against LSU if Reed Stallmans back doesn’t tighten up in warm ups.

This just silly. We're 45 games into the season. The stats tell a pretty honest story at this point. If you don't realize we're damn good with the potential to be even better, I won't change your opinion with data.

Correct, you will not. I watch every game. It’s tough sometimes to watch. If we are who we think we are at the plate, we have a chance to show it the next two weekends.

Do you not realize that watching every game is the reason you have the opinion you do? You see all the warts for the one team you love most, but all you can do with the other teams is look at stats and call them the best staffs in the league. Anybody who hasn't watched all our games and just looked at stats would call us one of the best most balanced teams in the league as well.

I agree we gotta prove it. We've certainly got the opportunity.

Texas is really good but also tends to have about one stinker a weekend. They played Vandy, Ole Miss, and SC just like we did, and dropped a game to each.

Auburn has played a ton of home series recently and they’re very good at home, so I’ll be curious to see how they fare on the road the next couple of weeks. Very good pitching staff, though.

A&M is the one I think may be playing a little over their heads right now. They can really hit but their pitching can be suspect.

Oh yeah…stats are there for analysis when you cannot see everything. So yes, Texas may be worse than they look. But let me give you an example. We scored 8 runs Friday against LSU. That looks great on paper. But what you don’t see is that they used an emergency starter b/c their Friday guy was out, and that 4 of the 8 runs we got to push it to extras were because LSU gifted them to us- misplayed fly ball is the only reason we scored 1 run, we scored 2 runs to tie it at 7 with no hits and a WP, and the only reason we scored the 8th is b/c LSU failed to touch second turning 2. And we have little wiggle room left b/c our offense royally failed us at Arkansas, 2 games against Georgia and against Tennessee. I don’t think many people who watch this team regularly think it’s some offensive juggernaut. Hopefully these last 3 games where we did hit some back end pitching will give us confidence going forward.

I can do what you just did with a win with about half of our 10 losses, if not more. We're probably a single play or a single swing from winning half our losses. What you're describing happens to every good team. Look at Texas last night against a 20 win Sam Houston team. Needed all kinda heroics to win 15-14, but that's what good teams do more often than not. Not pretty sometimes, but they win a lot more than they lose.

By the way, we're also missing our Friday starter. At least LSU knew who they were facing Friday. We had to adjust to an unexpected starter.

Oh I have no doubt we are close to winning several games. Our pitching has really been good all things considered. They have kept us in a lot of games. 6-5 TN, 5-5 to extras against Georgia, 3-1 against Georgia.…so many close overs.

The only teams in the sec who have lost less games than Miss State overall are Georgia, Texas, & Texas A&M
