Neither didn’t UofL. Basketball used to mean something to both schools. Now it’s a joke.
Why? I’m genuinely curious. What has he done to even be in consideration for this job? I would love to see him have success, but I’m not expecting anything more than this year.
He was an amazing player here. Amazing. He hasn’t given one indication as a coach that he not only knows, but can execute, the necessary things to be a successful coach. Then you consider what success means at UK, and I think the conversation changes even more.
Nothing against the Pope at all, I just don’t see how we didn’t make a run at someone with more history, success, recruiting accolades, etc. I don’t think we had one serious conversation with another candidate.
If the goal was to hire young and not do it again for 15 years, I would imagine that the majority of people polled wouldn’t include Pope in their top 10, maybe top 25 young coaches expected to succeed at a high level.
Look at the growth at BYU since he left. Yes, the landscape is ever changing with NIL, eligibility, etc., but every other coach must navigate that as well. We increased his pay by what, 3-4 x what his salary was? Why? The whole thing confuses me.
I wish I was writing the opposite, but that just isn’t reality. Duke recruiting hasn’t changed since K left, not much at least. KU is clearly recruiting top players. How many 5* recruits do we have? I’m not saying we have to have 10, but we’ve got to have 2-3. Do we have one? I’m scared to look.
Your whining will have nothing to do with it if our administration decides to move on from Pope. I'd certainly hope our new A.D. will make sober rational decisions on what is best going forward for our program and is not swayed by over emotional fans. If next season is no better I'm guessing he will be gone and I won't be whining about that move if it happens but I am hoping for him to have as much success as possible as long as he is our coach.

Cal would have had him and Kinney wrapped up a year ago if he had the booster support still.
What's really funny is the fact that you come here to gloat Kentucky missing on a top recruit, but at the end of the day, your coach could get 5 top 10 recruits & still lose in the tournament because he is a horrible in game coach, all he can do is recruit.
I think the main problem is we have a lot of loser fans.

You are spot on 99% (I don't think he was an amazing player). He was not qualified, and should never have been considered, let alone hired and given 5M+. We need to end this experiment ASAP and get back to national relevance.

Once Stokes alluded to a life outside of one year of college basketball I knew Pope was done. He doesn't develop talent or recruit talent. BYU got better after he left and that tells a lot. Another Barney blunder. Hate it for Pope, but he just wasn't top tier level coach that even deserved an interview at UK. At least with Cal we got top level high school kids .
You're entitled to your opinion, I'd say i was more speaking to the people blaming fans for Pope being a bum. I'd say i dont think you'll find much joy in this coming season but that's just my opinion
This season is going to get UGLY. i hate that for Ky basketball. Fans are going to treat Pope so bad it could impact recruiting his eventual replacement
Nope. Should of been a good enough coach and recruiter to land the guy with unlimited NIL money.
It would be ridiculous to think that the fan base fully supporting or being totally negative towards the coach and the team would not have some effect on our success or failure. If the negativity is strong enough to cause enough failure that cumulative failure could very well cause a coaching change in time . So the question would be how many think potentially contributing to UK's basketball failure is a worthwhile endeavor in their zeal to get a coach dismissed? That of course also means if you don't believe it has an impact on our success or failure then what is the point of all the whining?
I’ll root hard for the team, Stokes or not.
My opinion is that the sooner Pope and UK part ways, the better. However, that depends on the AD that finds their way here, whenever that may be

There is an extremely high likelihood that this is a total pipedream on your part . I would not have much respect for somebody who just gives up on their dream just because everything hasn't gone their way to this point.
Does this mean that if you knew your actions could cause massive failure for UK basketball in the meantime you would be all systems go?
