Please tell me we're not starting the 2026 season with the same two starting DTs as last season.

Our starting DTs from LY are going to play extensively, even if they don’t start. USC, Indiana, Michigan, Penn State, Nebraska, and Wisconsin are likely going to maul the DL, as they have done historically. The DL is easily the weakest unit of the team. We needed significant P4 help from the portal but didn’t get it, because our efforts went towards finding new defensive coaches. Lower level transfers will do their best, but will likely be overmatched by the best college football offensive lines money can buy. Hopefully, the DL is serviceable vs everyone else. Next years portal defensive haul should be a lot better.

You mean the nearly 3 month search for a DC? A record for a P4 HC.

Blue-Ely and the transfer Nose will be a big improvement. I also believe a few of our RS frosh are going to make big impacts.

I would say our biggest question mark play is the LBs not the DL. Our LBs really struggled last year in most areas of football.

I hope so, but I’m really concerned about the talent at Defensive End. This is where we really struggled last year, giving up the edge all season long. At least at LB, I like the pipeline of talent, even if it’s green. Ty Morris was very productive at Rice and I’m very high on DJ McClary, even if he doesn’t start.

Difficult to hire someone, when the roster doesn’t have enough defensive talent to be successful. We know going in, ‘26 is probably going to be a tough year for the defense.
In ‘27, we should be a lot better, because we’ll do much better in the portal, and the coaches we hired, will help us identify and recruit talent.

NT is Rondo Powell.
Hoping for contributions from McClary and Archie at LB.
And also a pass rush from transfer Malachi Davis, Wydeek Collier RS frosh, and RJ Johnson.

I've seen the DL practice more than once. I feel the DE will outperform the DT this year. Overall, the DT unit looks better. The defensive unit looks like someone took the time to coach them. :D The defense may not be an all-time great unit, but it will be much improved from last year.

I think people are sleeping on the LB unit. IMO, the younger guys who have been in the system for a few years look better than those who came through the portal.

I think we put our DEs in a position that they could not be successful in last year. We asked them to pass rush but also be our contain player, but also at times pick up the RB from the rush end position. All while having LBs that got caught in no mans lands numerous times.

If a DE can't contain while rushing the passer, maybe he doesn't belong on the field. That's DE 101 lesson. Now, picking up the RB coming out of the backfield means the DE can't do all three things (rush the passer, contain, & cover the RB). The issue with the LB last year was just poor coaching.

I’ll sign up for modest improvement right now. If we can at least be serviceable, that would be huge.

That sounds like a coaching problem. Hopefully, the defensive coaches that replaced the previous ones get better performance from the DL and the defense as a whole. I don't see how the defense could possibly be worse than it was last season.

I think the continued “we are a year away” or “we’re young” , etc is getting really old. I understand the NIL situation, what has happened to development? as in “we’re a developmental program”. The development of previously recruited defensive players has been terrible over the last 3 years or so. This from a defensive minded HC. If the defense this year is as bad as last year, there may be an entirely new staff in 2027 - even if it doesn’t seem likely now.

There is a huge difference from just rushing the QB and being a crush down contain defender or a spill and stretch contain player.

LB will surprise this year I believe.
Archie and McClary are both 4 star highly recruited.
Add in the Rice transfer and Walker and Wright returning {!hopefully} the LB should be the deepest unit on D.
