John Prine died 6 years ago today. I loved all of his music. His debut album was pretty amazing.
In case you did not already know ... 2 of many videos on the history.I was in my early teens when I heard this album for the first time. An older neighbor had bought it played it for me. Was a defining moment for me when I knew I would no longer listen to soft rock, pop and Motown, and would now only listen to guitar driven rock songs. Smoke on the Water, Highway Star, Space Truckin’…
Been rediscovering this gem of an album from several years ago. So, I was sifting through my hundreds of CDs the other day and saw this one. I hadn't listened in several years. Forgot how cool it is.
The album is titled "Three Skulls And The Truth". It features three guys that met on a Jimi Hendrix tribute tour a couple year earlier. They bonded while on tour and decided to cut an album together. Each is the front man/guitarist from three of my favorite Blues-Rock Bands. Luther Dickinson from North Mississippi Allstars, Mato Nanji from Indigenous, and David Hidalgo from Los Lobos.
I'm a big Mule fan as well. I'm a bassist, so as you can well imagine, The Deep End albums I absolutely love just because of the variety of styles, all from guys I idolize just as Allen did. Also probably why Thorazine Shuffle is amongst my favorite Mule tunes. If I were forced to listen to just one band going forward, it would be Gov’t Mule. Such a phenomenal band. And, in my most humble opinion, Warren Haynes is the greatest triple threat…singer/song writer/guitarist ever!

Absolutely filthy indeed. I like the earlier Mule stuff just because of Allen's bass playing really. Left Coast Groovies, Larger Than Life, World Gone Wild, Rocking Horse, Bad Little Doggie,...I could go on but you get the idea. The Deep End albums are fantastic. And, yes, no doubt as a bass player I’m sure you appreciate the masters that played on those two albums in honor of Allen Woody. Thorazine Shuffle is one of my favorites as well. The only one better featuring bass was No Need To Suffer from Life Before Insanity.
Where did you see him perform ... just curious ?? Was it in Nashville ?? That's a damn cool CD jacket, btw ... !!By far the best street musician I've ever seen. I even bought one of his CDs, "I See"
