The roster isn't finished yet... but Pope is building the roster how he should have his first or second year, it's almost like he thinks he will get a year 4 no matter what. What do you all think? Does Pope think he's here for a while? Wilkins(who i like) and N-Diaye(who I also like) are gambles and guys who usually blossom after 1 or 2 seasons at the power level but they are projected starters for this year. Still missing multiple stars to really move this team and Pope's tenure. Maybe he is waiting on the 5-for-5 for the bigger names but IMO we need 2 elite players.

One is settling and still not breaking through in terms of getting real Kentucky basketball hype going for next season.
He will be fired during the season next year. If not before.

year 4 is a pipe dream. The guy can’t coach.

I really didn't want a year 3 but I get it.

But to get a year 4, for me, he has to have atleast an elite 8 and no more than 9 or 10 loses with said elite 8. If he wins the SEC or SEC tournament and loses 2nd round or earlier, I really don't care for that result unless we only lost like 7 or less games all year and just got upset in the tournament but lots of ifs and scenarios....

Hopefully after year 3 it's an easy decision of like he lost 12 games we are moving on or he made the final four /elite 8 we are doing year 4... and not some in between crap like he loses 10 or 11 games but makes sweet 16 and came in 2nd /3rd place in SEC

He shouldn't of had a year 3 . If the current AD favorites get job he WILL get year 4 no matter what . Pope has put together a BYU roster- REmind me how much success he had at BYU ?

In their first season in the Big 12 (2023–2024), Mark Pope led BYU to a 5th-place finish with a 10-8 conference record. Picked to finish 13th in the preseason, the Cougars finished 23-11 overall and earned a 6-seed in the NCAA Tournament.

Pope was hired 72 hours after Cal resigned and after Drew and Hurley turned Mitch down. How much vetting did Mitch do? You don’t hire a men’s basketball coach at the University of Kentucky because he is a former player here and a good guy. Mitch was lazy and didn’t do his homework and look what we have. I hope the university hires a competent AD and correct this six year mess our program has gone through.

Is this supposed to be in defense of Pope?

How much do you and TF get paid per post? A nickel ?
Who are the ELITE scorers that can go get theirs at any point in the game. Don’t even try to use Wilkins because he averaged 17 at Furman against weak competition. He gets in foul trouble or ankle injury there isn’t t anyone to fill that role. You have to have a minimum of 2-3 ELITE scorers on the floor.

Between some fans going full Minneapolis Minnesota, the corrupt administration, and the boosters putting most of their eggs into football, it doesn’t matter how many years Pope gets!

Might as well keep him until he retires. UK’s men’s basketball program is on a ventilator as we speak, and the as for mentioned parties above are going to see it to its grave.

The UK basketball I grew up on is never coming back, that much I know.

All that’s needed now is for someone to start a thread entitled, “Bump This Thread When UK Sucks!”, and we are good to go!👋🏻👋🏻👋🏻

NO NO NO NO!!! The goal posts are not moving. Pope needs a final 4 type team. And even then, I would prefer we move on.

Of course he believes he’s getting a year 4. And he should believe that. He’s going to need to show more of the promise he showed in year 1 and take it one notch further and he remains here. Best case scenario is and will continue to be: Pope killing it here.
I am not sure about any of that.

Of course he believes he’s getting a year 4 - I suspect he knows he is in over his head and probably hates life.

He’s going to need to show more of the promise he showed in year 1 and take it one notch further and he remains here. I guess it depends how you define "take it one notch further." It's probably better to focus less on a yr 1 comparison and more objective outcomes this season. We need to be a top 5 this season or see ya. We are UK. We have the tradition, the fans, the $. That is our standard. No excuses.

Best case scenario is and will continue to be: Pope killing it here. Sure, in an abstract sense. But in terms of evaluating whether he should remain coach, our hopes have nothing to do with it. Honestly, this recruiting cycle is not going as well as it should to this point. Still time left, but underwhelming to this point. He is getting laughed at by opposing coaches. I do not want a fluky elite 8 run, then clamor to retain him, only to have 5 more seasons mired in mediocrity. Because that seems more than non-zero chance, I think we should avoid statements that we hope he succeeds. He does or he doesn't. Let's be completely objective. And so far, it's a no go for year 4.

Argue away
I’m not gonna though
I’m fairly confident I know better
Bro. We (general public) only have three game films on the guy.

One exhibition against Alabama.
One early regular season game against High Point.
One NCAA tournament game against UConn.

Unless you’re paying tens of thousands of dollars for Synergy, you know just as much as the rest of us. A really small, but exciting sample size of full game film, highlight reels, Sport-Reference stats and breakdowns from others who do have Synergy. Those people, like Brandon Ramsey, are telling us he has flaws and there is some risk but very high reward.

People speak in definites far too much based on little to no specialized info

It's a year to be very cautious with Pope - you give him the season and see how he executes on the roster build.

I have found the roster build to be sloppy and all over the place. I get slightly nausceous coming on here seeing the 67th recruit visiting, it tells me it's not part of a plan, just part of getting enough guys to field a team. It's been a laughingstock across college hoops - hell, even Ville can bring a guy in and close the deal.

I respect programs that are quiet about it and then before you know it, they have a signing. I've watched some of the top programs run - Dusty has pretty much nailed 2/3 guys he's targeted, Hurley has pretty much gotten every guy he's wanted quietly.

Then over here in Lex, we are bringing in volumes to kids to see who will stick. It's not a great sign, and not how the top programs are doing it. If he can magically pull together a winner (S16 minimum, Elite 8 ideal), then maybe you give him another year.

Torn on whether I hope he bombs or he wins.
