Yeah everyone pretended the evil universities were hoarding the football and basketball revenue to make themselves rich, when really they were just paying for the other sports. Thanks Jay Bilas.
I would be fine with football, basketball, maybe baseball then how ever many women’s sports you need to comply with Title IX.
I'd like to know how they got that $3,284. Surely they're not charging people money to watch a college tennis match?

.All that you have to do is look at the local high school sports teams. There’s usually only parents at tennis matches and baseball games at our school. Football and basketball are what pays for the other sports.
Wait why keep Title IX under this pretense? Cutting sports because of monetary losses yet keeping other sports based on gender to provide opportunity while ignoring those losses. There are a lot of kids in the non-profit generating sports that have the opportunity because of those sports.
And yes I have a daughter.
Pray for our rifle team, it's the only title contender we have.

All non revenue sports will have to seek private donations and/corporate sponsorship to survive in the long run.

The landscape of college sports has already drastically changed but it’s not even begun to settle. Football, basketball, and baseball are all that most schools are going to do in the future. To stay title 9 compliant they will offer softball, volleyball, etc but will keep it at a bare minimum.
However, once this stuff goes privatized or the schools make them employees I’m not sure how title 9 could be used anymore. The language in that isn’t set up to work with what’s going to happen.

There was a recent spreadsheet of the U of Alabama rev vs cost and the only revenue made sport are FB and MCB, and everything else was a cost. FB brought in about 10x as much as hoops.
The costs of the non-revenue sports are highly inflated though. They scale with the bloat of athletic departments since they're playing with Monopoly money. That's how you wind up with soccer coaches making $150,000 and whatever.
Kentucky sports mostly make money cuz we show up to watch.

I always heard it was mostly rich kids who get non football/basketball scholarships. If that’s true, let their family fund these programs. Non-profitable school sports are just a waste of money and time.
Give scholarships to kids who need them for education so they can be productive members of society, not making a bunch of gym teachers and car salesmen.

Probably comes as a shock to you but tennis is a great sport to watch. That said not sure how they spent that much money unless it was recruiting foreign players (mainly Euros).
It's not a shock; I'm a former tennis player. I'm still active at joking.
The government can try and make them have sports teams I guess, but it’s not financially feasible to spend 3M on teams who bring in $3,500 a year. That’s like the WNBA without being supplemented by the NBA.

You are right, tennis is fast paced and fun to watch. I had 2 daughters that played in high school and it’s really not a boring game to watch. Because it didn’t bring in much money (if any), there were times when the parents literally had to transport them to matches, they couldn’t even secure a bus to take them.
They soon may not have anyone to compete against anyways.
There’s already only a tiny handful of schools that have rifle programs. Who knows how many will be left standing after all this plays out.
This was bound to happen. Non revenue sports will be relegated to basically intramural club type status. Everyone warned of this and only the fools on charge couldn't see it.
In current state, its the right move. That's why its so funny insane Mitch was the sole opposition to a standard rev share, so he could give more money to non rev sports. It was insane and maybe even the straw that finally broke it for his tenure.

Honestly started long ago with the addition of a bunch of non revs. There’s 30 ish teams in a big athletic department. Maybe more.
Non of which have ever made money.

You're right. But not sure if you're from Ky or not but Kentucky HS tennis outside Louisville, Lexington, N Ky. and occasionally a player or two from maybe Bowling Green is absolutely atrocious and an affront to the sport. These yokels in administration in Ky high schools give it no attention and think that it's a sport you can let kids play who don't play the big 3, when in fact it is by far the most difficult to play well.

It was lawsuits and judicial rulings that basically forced the NCAA into this predicament.
Universities can fund whatever sport or student they deem worthy. What about all the academic scholarships that total millions? What revenue are those students bringing the university? I think the minor sports like baseball, softball, tennis, golf, volleyball, rifle, etc are important to fund at some level. All college athletes can’t be hired millionaires like the basketball team.
I think you’re missing the biggest cause. Rather than coaches salaries and NIL (which is privately donor funded), it’s the direct revenue sharing with athletes now allowed as a result of that recent House vs. NCAA lawsuit.
That just began this year and it’s gonna have a disastrous impact on all non-revenue sports in the coming years. The money Universities had been setting aside to keep those sports alive will now instead be going to football and basketball players.
Arkansas is just getting things started. TONS of big conference schools will soon be following suit.
Non-revenue sports build discipline, leadership, teamwork, time-management skills, and sportsmanship. Fortunately, humans won’t need those attributes in our AI future.
