I know Hawk fans are anxious about the DL this fall, probably with good reason. But as long as we've got Phil in charge of the D it will be pretty good- at least. I wonder how many high profile jobs he has turned down.

Also, have heard that Buffington is playing great as a new starting LB.
For me, it's not even as broad as the DL, it's simply the DTs. If we've got 2 walk-ons running with the 1's on a B1G team, we've got a real problem. No offense to them, I'm sure they're great people, but if we want to compete for a playoff spot, we cannot be starting 2 walkons (or even 1) at DT. We need young guys to step up this summer and fall.

All of this is spot on. I’m hoping the kid from North Dakota really splashes but his production to this point has been underwhelming. I don’t see the kid from Holy Cross making an impact. Holding out hope Chinke or Kennedy make big gains.

As far as the De's has anything been said about Khamari Brown? Don't know what to make of him. A lot of production but pretty small

Curt Cignetti would be interested in this take. He had 8 five-stars total on his 16-0 national title team last year, a team filled with James Madison transfers. Look at the performance, not at the star rating, especially at Iowa where guys like Dallas Clark have walked on and gone on to Big Ten, All-American, and NFL Pro Bowl status.

BTW: And I don't know if this is on the table or not, but if you don't have enough quality DLs, maybe go to a 3-down alignment and take advantage of the linebacker room in a 3-4 setup. That's what most good coaches do--adjust to the talent they have.

Not disagreeing with you at all, but as a long time Iowa fan I would be ecstatic if we ever had 8 five star kids….😎

Really, go to a 3-4? What 300+ NTs are on the roster?

Then you've heard incorrectly. Starting LB's have not been named

You never know about walk ons. DJ Vonnahme was a walk on...and then, BAM! He looks like another future NFL TE.
I trust this coaching staff.

Some other notes about the defense, per Phil:

One name that has continued to brought up the last 4-5 months is DB Jacob Wallace. Phil sang his praises again, saying that he’s not emotional & is very consistent in getting the job done.

Anthony Hawkins is a great athlete and has a chance to play multiple positions.

Devan Kennedy has done a great job and has stood out this spring.

Will Hubert and Luke Gaffney have been consistent in the middle.

Bryce Hawthorne has been banged up a bit, but Phil expects him to continue to progress.

Phil can play Zach Lutmer at 5 different positions. Phil says that he doesn’t feel the need to play Lutmer at corner due to how good he feels about the depth there.

Phil said Iose Epenesa is doing well and making some progress. He's young with a lot of expectations on him, but he's been improving

I like how Lester mentioned in his presser that with Phil’s D you really don’t know what is coming. QB has to read quickly.

Yeah, coaches go to a 3-4 when they have absolute roadblocks playing nose tackle. really good nose tackles are usually 300-320 and can eat up two offensive linemen on each play. I dont think we have a really top nose tackle if we are worried about all our DTackles.
