Why wouldn't he want to coach guys making more NIL? Just because a kid gets paid more $$ doesn't mean he isn't a great kid to coach, doesn't mean he won't play hard, doesn't mean he isn't a coaches dream?
You don't think Sha would have wanted to coach Zuby as one example? That kid was one of the hardest working, easiest to root for players I've seen in college basketball in a long time. Or Karaban, who basically was a coach on the floor for Hurley teams that went to 3 out of 4 title games?
Absolutely. And Sha was coaching guys like Whitehead, Carrington, Powell, and Delgado here. He knows what he’s looking at and knows talent. I’m sure he’d be the first person to have wanted Richmond, Davis, Clark, and Hines back.
His philosophy of coaching and roster building doesn’t lend itself to getting stars in this era with our budget. He’s not going to leverage the budget to do it, and we can debate that on merit. I think we have issues on personnel that the new GM is chartered to fix too.
But Sha is going to collect average players with upside to have a deep team and hope they get better and come together via defensive, physical ball. That’s the design here. It bombed with the gambles in 2024 on a $2M budget. It got better and had us in the hunt in 2025 with a $6M budget.
