They might have better PR if they just kept their mouths shut about whether they thought someone was committing or not. They build up expectations that a commitment is eminent and then they look like fools when it falls through. Like with Wright, I genuinely think he wanted to be back at BYU from the get go, but he had to play portal chicken to get them to raise his NIL. And Pope took the bait hook, line, and sinker evidently not realizing the guy didn't want to be at UK unless BYU refused to budge on price. Even then, probably wouldn't pulled a Freeman and started shopping around elsewhere if BYU balked.

For sure, no doubt in my mind that we do not get Stokes and lose out on other players while waiting along the way. This cycle alone we supposedly lost the GA kid that went to ARK while waiting on Wright who was never coming and obviously Sebastian Rancik as well.

They think they have Stokes, Blackwell and Stokes isn't a fit when we have Diallo and Wilkins. So we didn't even try because they truly believe they have Stokes and don't want to "mess" that up. They also thought they had Wright and Freeman, so hard for me to take what they say with more of a grain of salt for the time being.

Pope is not BCG bad. He is nowhere near UK standards good, not even in the same zip code, but he is not Clyde bad.
Excellent offers on the table, never seen someone struggle so hard to spend 9 million, but hopefully Milan is still on the table even with Stokes? Not sure if it’s an either or situation in terms of stokes vs Tounde and Milan but a combination of 2/3 would be excellent.

Clyde was an abuser and a drunk so it makes sense why he fell off the map. Had he not been a drunk he would have been better imo. Pope has better results overall I’d say, but Clyde recruited better when he was drunkenly on and that’s sad.

BCG is a far better coach than Pope can ever dream of being.
If Stokes signs with UK, it will be for more money than has been offered to any recruit in the NIL era.

Are we even sure Stokes is truly worth the NIL package that he’s going to be given? I understand he’s the #1 player in the class, but we’ve seen since NIL was instated that teams that get old are having the most success (not to say that freshman can’t be integral parts of a winning team). I just have my doubts that an 18 year old making 8 million dollars is going to live up to it.
But he was a worse fit for UK than Pope is. The pressure here plus his alcoholism just could not coexist. I mean, Pope has won 3 NCAA games. BCG went to the NIT.

Pope desperately needs to land a player of his caliber. Stokes and his agent know this. They know Pope is coaching for his job. They know they can play UK for even more money, and if the other schools want Stokes, they'll pony up too. Stokes wins in every scenario.
The donors can't "shift efforts" unless Pope also "shifts efforts" .
Whether they like him or not, donors can't get around Pope as long as he's head coach.
