UK wasn’t willing to wait either, which I thought at the time and still think was very shortsighted. Let’s say you don’t get him til towards the end of the transfer portal. You burn one season, and then take off in year two. In the long run that’s better than hiring a lesser coach who may have more success year one but has a lower ceiling after that.
Honestly, what is to stop you from recruiting players who have already committed elsewhere? The National Letter of Intent doesn't even exist anymore. And with every player having an agent, it's never been easier to back channel discussions.

UNC wasn't willing to wait for him to make this decision. But I've seen a lot of you on this board and social media express unhappiness with Pope. If your boosters really pressure your AD, you could probably force a coaching change immediately.
I feel like we are in some type of basketball purgatory. So keeping with that theme, I expect him to pop up at some SEC school.

UK won't even answer open letters from one of our biggest donors asking why our retiring AD is getting a golden parachute job.

Boy.. I think you have to call him now, offer him 10mil, and at the chance he accepts, you tell Pope to beat it. Next year will likely suck as the Portal is almost closed.. but next year was gonna suck anyways.

All that said, im still not sure how Billy D will fare in this NIL era. I dont really believe this to be the home run hire that a lot of people think.. but I think you have to take a shot.

we aren't lucky enough for the timing to ever work and our admin, AD, and leaders don't have the balls to do what is right.

But if we could back channel talk to him and he said he was interested in coming right now.... You most definitely go ahead and pull this bandaid off and fire pope to get Bill Donovan.

I’d rather face Donavon at Florida than Golden.
I mean, neither of them give me warm and fuzzies from the opposing sidelines. But I agree, Golden is a freaking killer. Young and hungry. Donovan has been there, done that. I could see him sliding into the Jay Wright type role rather than continuing to coach.

Some of y’all are so delusional.

HiRe DoNoVaN tOdAy.

Wanna bet on that happening? Anyone? I got $500 that says it won’t.

Well you still make an attempt. UK should be on the phone with him right now seeing his interest level, if hed want to come next year or even this year. I agree, its not likely to happen. But Billy D is out of a job now, so this might be UKs best chance to maybe land him. You tell him hes got nearly $20mil a year to hand pick his roster, and you get him a GM. You have to try.

@jedwar this Thread with incorrect info in the title got merged with a Thread with a correct title (“Billy D Walks Away…”), leaving the incorrect info intact. Can the title be amended?

Ok nobody worry. I have my Chicago to Lex plane tracking App running full-time. I will break the news when I see Billy has landed at a horsefarm to lock in the UK coaching job with our main man Mitch! What a relief!
