What, exactly? This is standard procedure. It’s hilarious they even “reported” on it.
Just be first apparently, the accuracy can wait. 😂

Sad to think the Pony Express was more accurate news than what we get in instant gratification 2026.

By this time tomorrow Metcalf might be Iowa's new Head Coach and TNT will be assistant's to Dresser at Iowa State. Stay tuned I guess ......

It isn’t that it’s inaccurate. It’s just such a non event.

Speaking of football, I don’t know how Ferentz keeps getting as good of recruits as ever being in his 70’s. I guess much different sports. Football has a ton of coaches, and many recruits talk about how they liked the position coach during recruiting, not Ferentz.
Ya football is a good bit different in that regard. Most of the recruiting and relationship building is done by positional coaches as much as anyone. Some coordinators more than others.

What is SOP? The hiring of assistants on a temporary basis? Or the general idea of hiring someone temporarily before doing a thorough search/formal process? Or something else I am missing? Because if it is one of the first two that must be unique to Iowa athletics as I have never heard of a temporary hire in the off season. Interim during the season, yes. Temporary in the off season, no. Besides it seeming odd, it seems very unfair to Warner.

It’s a university HR distinction. In this case, it’s used to subvert the formal hiring process. Very common for coaching hires. Can’t believe they took the time to make it so clear in this case. It’s a non-event.

Its just a formality. They have to post the open position for X number of days, give anyone that wants to apply do so, follow u of I/board of regents process, then hire the person they wanted all along.

another deficiency--

Recruiting Coordinator:

Other schools have them; they add value. Think of how much better M* would be with support. Maybe have a better plan in place when a kid and parents visit, regarding wrestling and academics. It would make things smoother

Especially since recruiting has been the biggest difference between us and PSU /Okyst, and falling behind Nebraska also, which I thought I’d never see.

This feels very much like Iowa is planning on letting Brands retire 2 years from now and is planning on the new head coach effectively cleaning house and bringing in his own staff. I don't think they want to bring in a guy that may want to be on that next staff potentially and risk burning that resource. I'm not saying that I agree with it...a lot of things can change very quickly...but I guess I understand it.

I'll take that. That's just the way that it felt based on the moves that they were making/not making. As I've said before, my background is in data analysis and I have almost no wrestling inside information at the D1 level. Lots of contacts all over in football but almost none in wrestling.

That’s not what I read into it. Warner may be getting set up for a shot at becoming the hc when TnT retire is another possibility.
That checks out. TnT added assistants that no one outside of Iowa City had heard of now they are setting up another guy that no one outside of Iowa City has heard of as our next head coach. I pray that you are kidding.

I’m not really kidding. It’s obvious that JW has made quite an impression on Bob. They’re either grooming him for bigger and better things or expecting TnT to get contract extensions at the end of current contracts, imo.

When someone suggested that after finding out Warners coming back to coach, didn’t Bob tell them they’re getting ahead of themselves in so many words? He did have better results in college than Morningstar, but if we were hiring from whoever is on staff in a few years, wouldn’t Morningstar be the pick with significant more experience coaching?? If we are hiring someone with minimal coaching experience to replace TnT, wouldn’t it be a big name so at least they could attract top recruits while they are gaining head coaching experience, like Taylor?

I agree. And saying someone is “getting ahead of themselves,” isn’t closing the door on anything. As a matter of fact, I see it as the opposite. It’s more a “wait and see how he does as an assistant,” statement to me.

Bob is not hiring the next HC. And the next HC will not be Jacob Warner.

Oh, Spooner… It’s time to wake up and realize it’s a brave new world. Today’s elite recruits aren’t looking to a college coach to develop them into champions. They’re looking for the largest bag of money they can acquire to secure their future. Gone are the days of needing a college coach with a ton of credentials on the mat to put together a championship team. It’s now the age of the bridge builder. And JW has already built a bridge to the most import component of success in this brave new world. He built a bridge to the money tree. Credentials mean jack shite now.

The part about what elite recruits are looking for is so off base.

Do you think they need a coach with great credentials on the mat to flourish? This is a new era. A bridge builder can hire that talent as his assistants. Gone are the days of attracting kids by past performance on the mat.

yeah. You're definitely wrong about that. One of the biggest reasons Brands was able to ink Bassett, had a chance with Jax and we have the 27 class is that he decided it was important to be intricately involved with the recruiting.

It still matters A LOT. Obviously, money is a big deal, but if we're talking about the recruits we want - it's whether or not we can have them reach their goals. One of the biggest draws of DT is that he's DT. Credentialed and can still wrestle with the guys everyday.

We didn’t sign Jax, lost Bassett the rest is still pending. JW can hire the best credentialed coaches in the nation and then concentrate on building bridges. (Or, airports to help deliver heavy sacks of money to recruits.) Bridges are what we lack. Credentials have not moved the needle for us, imo. Money, program history and a rabid fan base have been the draw for Iowa. And only one of those three are a new development. Do you think DT would be as successful that quickly in Stillwater without a sugar daddy? I highly doubt it.

DT is also the reason there is a sugar daddy. It wasn't going to Coleman. Chicken/egg, yada, yada, yada.

It's not just one thing. It's not JUST money.

When has Iowa tried the best credentialed? The average 16-17 year old potential recruits might have seen a grainy Brands video on YouTube and have no idea who the likes of Morningstar or Telford or Warner even are. A lightweight recruit might be swayed by getting to roll with Spencer Lee but no one else at the HWC moves the needle.

The highest recruits want national championships but also want World and Olympic medals. Look at how many active Penn State wrestlers are taking part in the US Open this week. Now look at how many active Iowa wrestlers are attempting to qualify for various teams. Maybe Iowa is a women's wrestling school now.
