Barring some miraculous pickup of Tyran Stokes + Graves/Milan/Miikka/some unknown euro stud, we are heading for the worst non-covid year of Kentucky basketball since Eddie Sutton’s final season.

Our best returning player was outshined by Brandon Garrison the whole month of March and only had one double double against a power 5 opponent all season. Kam returns after scoring in double figures against P5 opponents just twice, with one being against that awful MSU team.

I actually like Alex Wilkins, but the analytics do not. Evan Miya has him ranked almost 200 spots below Jasper Johnson for last season, and his defensive metrics make me worried he could be a score 15/give up 15 type of player at this level. And there’s always the physicality of the SEC that makes it uncertain if he’ll be the high level scorer we need.

Zoom Diallo is our best pickup, but I think it’s safe to say his Washington roster last season was more talented than what we currently have…and they went 16-17. He had a lotto pick at the 4, Wesley Yates who we wanted badly last year, and several other solid transfers.

Otega’s production will be extremely difficult to replace. In SEC + postseason play he averaged 21.5 PPG, 5 RPG, 2.6 APG, and 2 stocks. He was the only star caliber player of the pope era and also did a lot of dirty work, getting into passing lanes, etc. Idk who takes on his role this year.

Oh and the ultimate kicker? We once again are looking at not having enough shooting under a coach who needs shooting to unlock his entire system. Zoom and Wilkins are solid but there’s no dead eye like Brea here. Kam was an average shooter against real comp last year. The shooters we have been connected with are low volume guys. For some reason we didn’t even seem to get in real contention for a guy like Stefan Vaaks who made 91 threes last season. The lack of high end talent is enough of an issue, but pope isn’t even building a roster that plays to his strengths either.

Pair all of this with the fact that we’ll play one of the hardest SOS’s in the country once again and it’s looking unbelievably bleak.

And maybe the most frustrating part of all of it is Pope chose to put himself at a disadvantage by not hiring a GM. Reporters pressed him on it for months and he just shrugged it off, and now look where we are. Not even targeting the real big fish and being rejected by 2nd tier guys and having to look at JMU transfers and NIT team role players.

Sorry for the long post but I just had to vent. I’m preparing myself for the ugliest season of Kentucky basketball in my adult lifetime.

You make several good points and echo some of my pessimism when considering the probable outcome of next season with our current signees. My only comfort is that the portal is still open, and new entries may become available.

Nonetheless, I prefer being just bad enough next season to find a new coach (if we aren't going to be really good). I think several top-tier coaches will be more interested in following the likes of Pope at UK than Calipari. We just need Mitch to gtfo of here.

Acting like Covid somehow caused Cal's crappy season makes no sense.

Impossible to know what our record will be at this point.

What we do know is Pope's job was to put together a much stronger roster this year than the last two.

By all accounts, he has failed miserably.
There's no way he bounces back from this. I posted a week or two ago, that negative recruiting is out on Pope. And the optics are bad, 22 million dollars on a roster, to lose 14 games. And go out in the 2nd round. He had guys on the roster from other power SEC teams, actually leave and transfer to other SEC teams after the season (Denzel and Mo). He's a total unknown to most recruits and their families. You're a 5 star recruit/good transfer, going to play for Mark Pope, who was a career NBA towel hander, who's never won any hardware as a coach, no tournaments of any kind as a coach, developed 0 NBA all stars. Over Dan Hurley, Tommy Lloyd, Nate Oats, Todd Golden, John Scheyer, etc etc? Not gonna happen. Unless we pay them an obscene amount of money. And even they usually transfer the next season anyhow. Hell, Derek Anderson sounds like he posts on rafters. He says Pope is too nice to coach at UK. And that our players lack basic basketball IQ, like holding follow throughs on free throws. What the hell are we doing here?

I know Derek Anderson spoke about something I have questioned since I heard about it and that’s why Pope wanted the team to practice free throws in a quiet gym. I seen that in a practice before our last tournament game, Pope basically threatened to kick fans out of the practice if they were loud. Why would they practice free throws that way? I don’t understand that at all.

I'm not insinuating that Dwayne Casey cheated. Dude was a heck of a head coach and was a better assistant than Pope is a head coach.
Are you capable of making one post without attacking Pope? I commented that there was no reason to excuse Cal's Covid year and you have insisted on responding with two attacks on Pope. My post had zero connection to Pope.

If we get Stokes UK still has a chance to be really good. If they miss Stokes they'll have to get Slim Jesus or one of the top 5 in the portal to have a chance of being a title contender. I still don't think they'll have a losing record. I'm convinced Hawthorne will be a breakout star and I'm sure the lower tier players we get will improve our bench a lot. The bench last year was as bad as I can ever recall at Kentucky; for most of the the second half of the year we had JJ, AJ, GG, and Noah on the bench. That was it.

Is losing out on Freeman all that bad? He's had 2 foot injuries the last 2 years, can you imagine what this board would be like if Pope signed him & that happened again? Is he not from New York anyway? He played at Syracuse & St.Johns is in Queens, maybe he knew all along he was wanting to stay closer to home & used us to get more money? Maybe he asked for too much money? Does anyone think he's worth 4 million? He shot 30% from 3 last year, we could get two 40% shooters for 4 million i would think. Maybe we end up going the international route? Maybe more players jump in the portal tomorrow?

We have that big stud Justin Mcbride visiting this week so we are in good shape for sure.

I still think we'll sign enough decent players to have an okay team. But just okay. Double digit NCAA seed. And that won't cut it at UK.

The bigger problem is Pope just can't recruit. This portal madness is going to get put in check by the NCAA. It is just a matter of time. And without transfers nobody is going to come play for him. I wouldn't trust him to evaluate the shape of a basketball let alone high school talent. I'll never root for UK to lose but he has to go by the end of next year. While the portal is still a huge tool we can rebuild this fast with the right coach. If the NCAA pulls it back next year a bunch of kids will try to get their name in while they are grandfathered in. But if we wait too long we are going to have to get a guy that has some relationships already built in the AAU ranks or we are going to look at a rebuild.

I do think he’ll be better than Jasper. 21 points against UConn is more impressive than anything Jasper did. But there are reasons to be cautiously optimistic about him

We lost out on our backup, Rancik, who is a better fit. McBride is our 3rd option, but frankly he’s more like a guy you give 6-8 minutes to for a backup to the starting guy, not giving him your starter role.

If McBride is our starter, we’re an NIT team at best.

Pope is coaching next year no matter what. Simply nobody in the administration has the inclination or will to fire him, people just need to accept it. As for next years team NOBODY even knows who will be on it yet. To predict wins and losses without that information is infantile. Do I think Pope turns it around next year, no I don't. I think the new AD , even if its Mitches guy will have to act. All this whining and giving up on next season however is such a ***** move IMO. UK is my team and I want to see them successful. I refuse to bury a team before we even finish the roster, much less seen them play. Hell you guys need to root for somebody else until Pope is gone.

Lol this is the type of knowledge fans on this board have Wesley Yates a lotto pick 😂😂😂 he might not even be a 2 way guy
