And I'm still wondering why fans aren't going batshit crazy. But you have people saying quit being mean to Pope and let everything unfold .

I don't care about landing Donnie freeman. I care about Pope getting the hell out of Lexington. Where do we all meet up and protest?

And i don't care about anybody crapping on this thread saying I'm spewing more negativity. It's no worse than seeing a million threads with passive aggressive sarcasm because of how bad we are. Have we really gotten to the point where all this is ok and we just joke about it.

Fire away at me. I'm sure we will whiff on ten people by the time y'all even get to say anything

Well, let’s say he lands Freeman, Stokes and a shooter. I’d still say Arkansas, Florida, Tennessee, Missouri, Texas, Alabama will have better rosters than us. Texas AM will have Haggerty, he could cook us as well and let’s not forget Vanderbilt who has the best guard in the league.

Right there with you.

The fact that MB is still in Lexington and that some of you insist on seeing another subpar year from Pope makes me sick.

I am too old to have another year of UK basketball wasted, as we postpone the inevitable for those a little slow on the uptake.

That lets you know how bad the roster is. If we land freeman who is a top 15 portal and Stokes who is the number one overall hs player you think 6 or 7 teams just in the SEC are still better. I have second hand embarrassment for Pope.

For some reason I'm getting the impression you have the same kind of humor as me and don't really mean what you said there. But if you did oh well. I can be standing on grass eating grass and smoking grass at the same damn time and it won't change what Pope is doing to Kentucky at the moment

Well Freeman came from a team that lost like 16 games last year, so did zoom. Kam I like but not a star yet. MM was really bad the second half of the year. Stokes is a unproven Freshman with attitude. I would be excited about Wilkins and Hawthorne if he stays.

OP is exactly right. Pope has to get it going asap. Next years team has to be an elite 8 with a shot at a final four type roster or he's gotta go.

The new barney may disagree though.
Honestly, I’m not sure what to do at this point. He needs final 4 good team this season, and you can pretty much already tell there’s no way that can happen. It’s like, if the roster finishes as bad as it seems now, what’s the point. He’s fired himself with this offseason

Be careful I got banned Friday night for being critical of the coaching staff had to create a new account.

Cause people want Pope to stay longer and want to see Kentucky suffer. We do deserve it tbh we ran hoops for quite a while
I believe the first part. If you're not a UK fan I'm sure this is amazing. But idk if we deserve it. The whole state doesn't deserve this just because of one man in Mitch Barnhart.

This sounds right. Arkansas depends on Thomas. Florida 1, Texas 2, Bama 3, Tenn 4, Ark 5, Tenn 6.

I wonder if he's still excited about recruiting? Didn't he say that when we had literally 0 recruits.

That's been my concern all along. Those aforementioned teams in the SEC are legitimate squads. Texas and Missouri will move up a notch and we all know about the others.

Recruiting is the lifeblood to every program and we haven't been attracting enough high level players. Plain and simple.

CMP was doomed, even if he managed to pull a jackpot in the portal while winning the Stokes Lottery we probably weren’t even a top 6 SEC team. If he screws up the portal and doesn’t get Stokes, we’ll struggle to even make the tournament. It seems the basketball gods are against CMP for some reason. But it comes down to a coach completely in over his head. He couldn’t even make it at Mississippi State, much less Kentucky.

It is what it is. The man is pretty much a dead man walking going into next year.

Development and retention killed Popes job. If Jela or Garrison would have gotten better this year or even Noah. Chandler leaves, can’t blame him. We almost are back to one and done teams but without the NBA talent.

I’ll be the first to defend the Honor of the OVC. Too many names of coaches & players who have been successful in the old & new OVC.

Not knocking any players, but it looks like Noah, Hawthorne and Potter will be in the main rotation with our current roster outlook. I'm not sure that lineup is striking fear into other teams.
They aren't UK caliber players. Telling the truth isnt knocking them. Everyone thought Pope was going to kill the portal when the writing has been on the wall for 13 years as a head coach.

Instead we have Trent Noah announcing his return. Mason williams announcing his commitment when I thought he did that three weeks ago. Potter saying he's returning.

What's going to really kill everybody is when Stokes goes to Kansas because reading the board all of you are really believing that we are going to land him??? You must be crazy. We can offer Stokes ten million and he still won't come here.

I'm with OP -- my biggest worry in all this is the support for a year 4. I've seen so many posts here like "he might have a year like his first year" as if that's something that supports keeping his job. The final 4 or bust consensus has already degraded into "yay we got 2 players".

Pope could be the best in game coach in the world and pre game like no other (he isn’t and doesn’t) but getting players is the number one job by a mile. Being a star coach can make up for that but Pope isn’t one. Shertz had a mid major roster and would have given Pope a beat down. Santa Clara almost did.

I don’t have the attention spam of a gnat and handwringing isn’t something I do.

I will evaluate the finished roster and either raise hell or be OK with it.

Either way, it’s fine. It’s either a bad roster, which equals a bad team, which equals a new coach in 2027. Or a he lands a good roster and good team and the coach keeps his job another year.

Me pissing and moaning online won’t improve the roster, so wait and see is my approach.

With Stokes unsigned and the portal still being open, I won’t say we’re going to be that bad yet. I like the back court guys we signed but I’m really concerned with how they fill out the roster from here. It’s a different era then with BCG was here, but I’m starting to feel confident in saying Pope is the worst recruiter I’ve seen at UK, which used to be what I said about BCG.

It's a simple answer. Pope cannot coach. He was a terrible hire and many saw it early. He got lucky as hell his first year but all the signs were there. He should have already been fired. This is not getting better. The '24-25 season will always be the high water mark of Pope's coaching career.

We should’ve done what Texas A&M fans did when they heard they were hiring Stoops and revolted to the point where the administration had to reverse course. We sat on our hands and did nothing. I was upset at first but then supported the hire. I’m upset I didn’t do more.

If that is the case he will just have to Coach them up.

I think 100% of fans did the exact thing you said you did. I know I did. But what got me on board was thinking Pope would have this killer mindset like Pitino. I about cried when they hired Pope. Then I got to thinking we were going to be pressing teams. Playing in your face defense. Running other teams off the court.

I made myself believe even tho Pope hasn't been a good recruiter that he would do better with Kentuckys resources. And I was like yea Pope is going to kill it with his system while having better players at UK.

But the truth is BYU got better. Status and recognition alone. Pope leaves and they get Dybansta instantly? Pope is yet to sign a top recruit. Pope still can't get talent even at UK. He just can't. I think everyone is looking to deep into things.

What I thought would happen didn't. Actually it's been the complete opposite on almost every front. What made it worse was watching Pope beat Duke in his first few games as a UK coach. Boy that really got me on board. But we all know the truth and it won't change.

He's not cut out for this job. Not anywhere close to it. Now the next guy won't be following up a hall of famer. He will be following up Pope. Go get a coach.

Do you remember how cool you felt back in those days when you still supported Cal after Shaedon Sharpe, St. Peter's, Wheeler quitting on the team, and Oakland?

That is to say, you lost a ton of credibility back then.
I’m a positive person. Love stirring up the miserable ones. So easy to do.

Personally im not freaking out because i already have accepted that we will be dogshit next year. Pope already missed on too many top targets for us to be a realistic contender. So basically the only enjoyment I’ll get next year is watching Pope go down in flames again and get fired.

With that said, I think I’m different in my reason for not freaking out compared to many on here. This board has a lot of delusional posters who will talk themselves into literally anything. Most of the fanbase talked themselves into believing Pope would be worth a damn just 24 hours after being livid that he was hired. They talked themselves into believing Zoom and Wilkins will be this amazing backcourt. In reality we have two guys who are ball dominant and have to have the ball in their hands to be effective. It’s not a good pairing at all and the bad part is they’ll likely be our two best players.

But it’s probably for the best that it happens this way. The last thing we need is another 24-12 season where we get a 5 seed and Pope lucks his way into a sweet 16 and our nutless administration keeps him for year 4.
