I don’t know about not being a good athlete. The highlight film says high IQ and athletic!
I agree on IQ part. Hopefully he can become a better athlete I don't see that as of now. Under 50% fg, at 7"3 in the WCC could be better. Takes big guys longer typically to develop into their body. Solid addition

Awesome!

Tallest Hawkeye ever? Antonio Ramos was 7-2 (but really just 6-10 with a comically long neck). I can’t think of any others.
I think Ramos and Woodbury were the only guys that we had that was officially over 7’ tall. A bunch of 6’11”/6’10” guys like Reiner, Hanson, Olaseni, and Garza in the last 25 years. Kunnert, Stokes, and Payne were also up in that range.

Having watched his film he reminds me of an even taller Woodbury. Good rebounder, fighter, and defender. Surprisingly good passer. Not a very good athlete. Hoping Mccollum can work on his explosiveness and he can become a better finisher. He's much needed for the Purdue, Illinois, and Michigan type teams that we struggled to match up with inside.

He's not super freakish athletic but he's got some nice moves offensively, he passes well, and looks like a good defender without fouling.

And for all of Woodbury’s athletic limitations, he was the main reason Iowa wasn’t atrocious on defense during his era. I never would have guessed back then how significant of a loss he would prove to be until suffering through the next ten years, or whatever the f#ck it was, of absolute garbage, pussified defense that Fran threw out there one year to the next.

1. Coleman
2. Combs
3. Sage
4. Koch
5. McKeever

Thompson
Manyawu
Howard
Harris
Coon
That’s the way I see it too. I think Ben will run two PGs / CGs similar to last year to start.

The issue is to me is who relieves those two at the 2 spot while the other runs point. Howard and Coon are certainly athletic and quick enough defensively but their outside shooting needs to improve. I’m not sure Sage is quick enough to reliably defend the 2 spot. I’ve seen suggestions that Harris can fill the need at the 2 spot.

We are stacked with a lot of young talent at the 2 - 4 spots.

We’ve improved at every spot with the obvious and significant exception in Stirtz. It will be a very fun year again next year!

welcome aboard he should be able to at least get us an extra 5 possessions a game on rebounding alone. Hopefully he can improve his ft percentage as that isn’t a strong suit right now.

Some numbers:

2 years left

played in 33 games (10 starts)

averaged 23 min, 8.2 pts, 9.2 rebs, 1.8 assists, 0.80 blocks, 0.50 steals

Shooting:
50%
from inside the arc (105-210)
.....0% from three (0-0)
63% FTs (59-94)

302 total rebounds (125 offensive)
59 assists
18 steals
28 blocks

Woodbury's defense was underappreciated

Woody was tough as nails. On top of that another thing I appreciated too was how much he improved his ft % over his time. McKeever 62% last year like to see that above or at 70% Cam needs to improve as well.

I'd say that's some pretty damn serious recruiting by Ben and staff. McKeever could've followed his coach or signed with some blue bloods. Instead, he chose Ben and the Hawkeyes. Fantastic.

Great points. He could have played for his coach (who left St Mary's for ASU) and enjoyed that Arizona weather.

I had to Google it because I forgot the details concerning Arizona State and the St Mary's HC taking that job.

After 25 seasons at Saint Mary's, head coach Randy Bennett left to become the new head coach at Arizona State University (ASU) in March 2026. Bennett, the winningest coach in Saint Mary's history, took the ASU job following the departure of former coach Bobby Hurley.

From all accounts it's significantly better than it was 2 years ago.. I can't quote numbers but it sounded like it was pathetic when Fran was here.
Lot of donors were keeping hands in their pockets with Fran and would’ve continued if he stayed. Goetz knew this and played in to her decision. Very similar to what I’ve heard is part of the reason why UNC let Hubert Davis go. As been reported sounds like Iowa brought in a nice chunk of nil revenue with elite 8 run.

Could've had something to do with Randy Bennett's NCAA press conference where he placed the blame of their loss squarely on the players
