Don’t have the time or desire to go through hundreds of posts in almost as many threads, looking for the latest on Alvaro, who’s leaving, who Ben has managed to get via recruiting or the portal.

Just answer me: are we going to be any d*mn good this year????

I’ll give you a straight answer. It’s truly hard to tell. He’s got great recruits and transfer(s). He’s got at least a couple of starters from last year coming back. He’s got Howard and Sage, who were very good for freshmen. And Ben can definitely coach. So, I think we might be in good shape, especially if we get the kid from St. Mary’s, Andrew McKeever. However, it seems like Michigan State, Purdue, and Michigan have a lot of good talent returning next season. I don’t know about the other BIG teams, their returnees, and transfer portal situation.

To add to your post. Indiana brought in alot of portal talent, Maryland has a top five freshman class. Actually Purdue loses four starters, they might drop a bit. Nebraska loses alot also. UCLA will be tough.

Michigan and Illinois at the top
Indiana, Michigan State and UCLA next
I would put Iowa, Maryland, USC, Purdue and Wiscy in the next tier.

Hawks could take a slight step upward.

Will they Hawks be "any good"? There is no doubt in my mind they will be "some form of good".

But the B1G is a powerhouse, and getting better.

So, my question is, "Will they be good enough to finish in the Top half (or Top 1/3) of the B1G?"

🤷‍♂️

I think you’re right with clear top 2. Talent wise could be right but with coaching I’d put Purdue and Maryland over IU even with tad lesser talent. I know Williams has 2 5* and think got a medical RS for big guy who played against us in Dec. for Maryland. Wisconsin got hit hard by transfer bug and have a huge task of replacing Boyd and Blackwell. Another one curious about is Nebraska. Seen Hoiberg bringing in lot of transfer with pryce and Frager main 2 returning, but one thing for sure they won’t catch teams by surprise next yr.

espn I’ll give them credit usually after portal closes does a good job of updating rosters with players lost. Returning along with portal and HS additions. Be interesting to see when they eventually posted because always a few guys you forget about who left or ended up at another school.

IU bringing in an entire new team (again) and you have them above us? You’re falling for the portal stars my friend.

Agree. Iowa is looking up, but the B10 is TOUGH.

I suspect that when Sage and Thompson are on the floor together next year that the scoring we lose with the departure of Stirtz...will be "found". A real dynamic duo, if you will.
Don't forget about Koch as well. Cooper started to come on at the end of the season and will become a real key next season with a year in the system and the toughness he brings to the table. With Coleman in the fold now we have a natural facilitator who looks like a decent shooter himself.

Good point, but I am not forgetting about him, I just didn't mention him since he was already a starter this year. I suspect his PPG will rise next year too. It will have to in order to backfill the Stirtz PPG this year. All good.

We might always have 40% 3 point shooters on the floor at the 1-4, which will greatly open up our offense. I don’t really worry about D with Ben coaching so I think we’ll be better but still might only finish 12-8 in BIG as conference is loaded. 5+ players averaging 8-13 ppg will make us tough to guard

with a relatively inexperienced PG who gets seasoned in conference battles, i expect another season like the one that just ended in which we play well enough to
comfortably make the tourney but more importantly peak as the tourney progresses. very importantly if ben has any self-respect he will win at least one more. in summary - middle of the pack in b1g regular season, final 4 or better in tourney

Not having Bennett back, I'd say that's pretty fair.

still convinced this is Lick 2.0
basically took Fran's guys to the Elite 8

shoulda kept Fran.. probably would have won the NC
I'm convinced you are an idiot or just not very informed. All of Fran's players except Koch left. Ben's team plays great defense and runs very good offensive sets. Fran never got to the sweet 16.

You haven't been playing very close attention, have you?

Koch was the only player left from Fran's teams. The rest of the team literally is all Ben's players. Many followed from Drake.

Really curious to see how Devries does next year. Thought he supposedly also had a good NIL budget to work with last year and didn't make the tournament. Maybe his 2nd year will be much better... But I'm still glad we got Ben intead.

It distressing when you see other BIG teams just scoring big time portal win after another. If we want to be elite in the conference we need proven portal additions. You cannot take mid-major players and develop them into BIG TEN players in 6 months and expect to win in the conference at a high level.

The portal is just another form of HS recruiting. In State (or players with an Iowa connection) are your best bet. After that, Iowa is a school with very little National cache (although the E8 helped) competing for top players. Add to that in many cases - less money.

Then there is this factor - Ben is looking for a certain kind of player. He's looking for that guy you want with you in a foxhole. And, there are a lot of top players that don't want to BE in a foxhole - they want to be on a hill far away shooting long range artillery.

I think Ben is going to get it done in HS and portal recruiting, But it might take some time,

Especially when your team plays in the Big 12. Right? Oh no the sky is falling!

Where do you think the vast majority of the successful portal transfers are coming from? The guys who entered college under recruited or developed late. Most of the upper D-1 transfers were not overly successful at their original school(s). Or they would have stayed there for one reason or another.
