I wish it meant McCowan was coming, but..................I'm hopeful. Not convinced, but hopeful.
Can you speak in regards to her parents? Seen a report of where the parents could be a handful. For some reason, Joens pop into memory.

Since you're hopeful yet, that would imply you haven't heard anything about it and not much to it.

Anyways you're plugged in deeper to discover these things more than anyone else here.

Anybody hearing anything about Reagan McCowan? She was supposed to be on visit this week but have not heard anything on it at all??
She was here Tuesday. Visit went well, her heart says Iowa but there are other options available to her for significantly more $$. So...it's up in the air at this moment.

I honestly think that a roster of 10 to 12 is good, I don't think you need that 14 person roster anymore, its not like you need 14 to scrimmage at practice as they have a guys grey squad for that.
Agree. ^^ roster spots 10 thru 14 aren't getting many minutes, normally. Frankly, they are mainly practice players who nowadays are very likely to portal after a year, so just fill out the last couple few spots with "grey shirt" level personnel.

Spend your money on the top 7 or 8 players and buy/rent the best ones that you can afford. After that...it doesn't matter as much.

I went to the link and checked. From 2013-14 to 2016-17, Hailey Schneden was a walk-on. But she was awarded a scholarship in her senior year because there was one available (13 total scholarships back then). From 2017-18 to 2020-21, Zion Sanders was a walk-on. Sanders was added to the roster after a try out in 2017 because there weren't enough healthy players on the team.

Edit: Ah, there weren't enough players in 2017-18 because there were only 11 players on the roster to start with and then freshman Jinaya Houston quit the team shortly after arriving on campus. This tells me Bluder and Jensen feel 11 players is the minimum number needed for the squad.
Thanks for the research and your analysis based on that research. And back to Megan Considine, her bio says of her two brothers, "Sean played football at Iowa and Ryan was a Hawkeye baseball player."

They are really good people, but...the money subject is a thing. We'll see how it goes...

I remember Lisa having to bring on an Iowa softball player because the team was so short on guards following some injuries. Can't remember her name though.

Was that Considine? Her brother walked on the FB team and worked himself into a starter? edit (already verified above)

Yeah, and in 2013 Schneden was added to the team also because there weren't enough players. The previous season there's a freshman Kayla Timmerman who left the team after one year, and there's no time to recruit another player. However, at least it's before the next season started, so it was not an in-season try out that nabbed Schneden.

Ill take a shorter athlete that can jump over a taller guard who cant. People are getting to hung up on height just like star rankings. Rebounding is about heart and and positioning, give me a smaller guard that has some hops over any taller one that their feet are stuck to the floor.
I've never seen a basketball program that wasn't hung up on size. For a football analogy - there have been many running backs and receivers that excel at blocking, but you don't want them on the offensive line. Same here, guards can grab long rebounds but they can't bang under basket for 30 plus minutes. Size matters.

I feel dirty for knowing this...but when finding out some background/stats came across her dads twitter. He doesn't tweet often. He did repost Kyle's post that she was visiting Iowa. Nothing about any other visits

6'6" forward Tilda Trygger transferring from N.C. State, is still available. Also, Kaylene Smikle from Maryland is available. 300 women have found homes already. According to Talia Goodman, 60% of the top portal entries have found a home. JJ and LaSondra have found two great players, but the list is thinning out and we still need 3 or 4 players. I keep hoping Reagan McCowan jumps on board , despite according to some, Iowa's offer is not the highest money offer,

Hawks at eight on the roster. Raegan would make nine. Great perimeter sbooter but probably won't start. She would see minutes though. It gets harder after this to add to the roster. A flex four to rotate with McKenna or a rotational piece at the three.

As stated Iowa has run with many rosters where it really only had 10 viable players. Its not something you should make common place but I would understand the reasoning. Its also not amateur but it could be a flaw.
Iowa started the season with a roster of 14 and ended with 10 avaliable players. If they had started the season with a roster of 10, they would have ended with a roster of 6 avaliable players. That’s the point. Injuries happen during the season and usually more than one.

I get it, but many players don't look at it that way.

Thinking back on last year:

- Gymfi didn't play all year - down to 13
- Mallegni out to start the year
- Rodriquez after six games (I believe) - down to 12
- Chit Chat was out with that upper body injury for a few games
- McCabe went down for rest of the season - down to 11
- Hannah was hurt and out a few games
- Johnson hurt late in the season

Jan did a terrific job piecing that team together.

Ava carried the load, Chit Chat and Taylor really improved and really helped
Houston did a lot more than expect, good for her
Hannah played her heart out even though she was dinged up, so proud of that young woman
Kylie's effort was tremendous but offense was too erratic
Hays took baby steps getting better, hoping for a better 26-27 season
Addie did not step up to the plate, very disappointing. Levin gave good effort but lacked some of the physical tools. Mallegni was just behind because of medical issues

Really like the 8 player roster so far. Stronger than last year.

Rodriguez doesn’t count odd situation but she quit that isn’t normal.. Injuries do happen which we lost 1 right in McCabe. Read my previous posts I said we should be at 11-12. The health issue is a risk but you don’t lose 4 players unless your the early 2000 Hawkeye WBB.

I can't speak to anything concerning the parents. Don't know them nor heard anything bad about them. I think that McCowan loved her visit and would love to "play" at Iowa. I think the Iowa staff would love to add her. But, I am sure other schools (don't know who) are offering starter minutes along with their financial commitment. I don't think, just guessing, that this staff guarantees anyone that they will start or play X amount of minutes. (Addie Deal) I believe McCowan should come, relish the opportunity, even if it means possibly coming off the bench, getting use to the faster, more physical play and then when in there making her mark and be a dependable, strong part of the rotation. The Big 10 is a huge step up from the OVC. I feel it is advantageous for McCowan not to be heavily depended upon as a starter and let her work her way to substantial playing time as time goes on. Who knows, maybe she comes in and grabs a starting spot before the season starts.

That's really not a good comparison, football is more a strength game and basketball more a skilled game, that's why in basketball you would get a foul for what you do in football. If you look at the men's basketball team they didn't have a lot of size compared to most teams they played but the undersized guys hit the boards well. And you cant compare mens and woman's sizes because its not uncommon to have 6'3 to 6'5 guys playing the skill positions that are still outsized compared to the woman's game most players are unger 6'4 and that 6'4 player is probably playing inside. Football is a 48 minute game of physicality basketball is a 40 minute game of more skill and depending on what style you play you may not do allot of banging inside. Also it was interesting to hear Journey Houston say the other day in an interview that Iowa will be a 4 out 1 in offense next year that they really couldn't do this year because Hanna never really developed the outside shot so teams could pack in and get more rebounds. If its true and i dont know why it wouldn't be then you 4 out wont be banging hard inside anyway on offense.

Do you recall where you heard Journey talk about 4 out? YT, podcast or article? Also if you don't mind, do you have a link to it? Thanks for any assistance you can recall on its location.

See post #1744. The decision, as far as I know at this minute, has not been finalized. But that is the "why" that explains the current delay.
I agree. Just seems like a poor tradeoff to play for a lame duck, disliked coach with probably a less talented set of teammates than she had at Western Illinois.

Players want to play. Not sure why that idea ever seems like a radical choice to some of you

Then stay where they sre. It obviously money and the fact that can be a free agent every year. Does want to play for fennelly or iowa state. 8 players said no. 36 players get drafted. Doubt she makes that cut. Take the money, but education stalls transferring every year because you have to start.

Well, I would like to assume that these facts ^^ have been shared with the young cager...perhaps even by someone on the Iowa staff. :)

But for real...I do sort of get it. If my son or daughter had some skill, whether it be musical, athletic, debate, etc, etc, and a college wanted to pay them for it...while also paying for their education, housing and food...and pay them handsomely for it...I suspect that I too, even as the parent, could think of many reasons to consider the various offers/opportunities.

These are just wild times for these players and their families. And also for the schools/coaches.

So you can upgrade to the Big 12 and start vs playing for Western Illinois? And honestly do you think her education is going to stall? This isn’t the old days.

Right? The benefits of playing at a P4 far outweigh the benefits of playing in a mid major like Western Illinois.

I saw it on Twitter it was a podcast interview just a few days ago as I think it was a Davenport station that was covering their local athletes. She also basically said she never considered leaving and loves playing for coach J

I see Iowa State just got a commitment from former La Salle player 5'11 Ashleigh Connor, who averaged 15.8 ppg, 5.5 rpg and 3.9 apg this season. Looks like a starter for them and is similar to McCowan. Does that mean McCowan is steering away from the Cyclones?
