As someone that had to sign over my first born and literally pay off a $77 AmEX balance ten years ago in order to qualify for a $300k loan, I am genuinely curious as to which bank got duped into loaning out $20M over a fake id and email address.

A lot of people want to be able to say they are "friends" with famous or semi-famous people. They will give questionable loans, and other things. I believe that this is why several famous people have died in plane or helicopter crashes, The trainer wants to be their friend and rushes them through or passes them through when they shouldn't have.

Oh shit, this just made me remember I had to pay off some stupidly small amount of money 14 years ago right before we bought our house because it actually made a difference on the mortgage application/approval/terms.

Ha, I had happily forgotten that pointless and confusing incident.

Man, tough day for those lenders. Lose all that money while showing people they apparently really, really believe all black guys look alike.

ETA: Just in case any of you are the lenders involved and are confused as to why I added four pictures of the same guy, just trust us that those are in fact pictures of four different guys.

So the wife and I did a HELOC a couple years back with one of these virtual notaries that is talked about in this story. I walked away thinking it was ripe for fraud.

Couple of years ago, I let someone borrow $400, and the bank saw it on my statement. They made me get signed notarized statements from the person that I didn’t owe them anything. This for a 200K loan. This guy gets 20 million with a yahoo account and. Football player Halloween costume.

ETA Come to think of it, I never saw anyone from the bank in person or over zoom throughout the process, so this checks out.

I'm quite certain he was not the first Bama or Auburn player that hatched this fraudulent scheme. Great way pay 5 star players if you think about it.

I'm wondering how someone wears a disguise to look like an NFL player. I suspect very few people know what a player, even a well known one, looks like when they're not in uniform. I have no idea what Michael Penix looks like and I doubt the loan officer did either.
