His assist rate was 40% in the 13 games against top 50 opponents they played last year. Here is comparisons to other assist rates against power opponents Aberdeen’s was 18% chandlers was 13% owehs was 16% Lamont butlers was 32% Amari Williams was 27%. He is a great creater especially when he can get in the lane going downhill.

Yeah, but I read on here that he is the same player Aberdeen was and "we're cooked", "I can't believe this is where UK is at right now, wah, wah, wah".

He's 6 4 and a dude who can handle physical play. He's a good get.

I also like that 52.6% on uncontested 3pt shots. You can't leave him open outside.
If his shooting percentage on uncontested threes is 52.6% you can leave him open.

While the NCAA does not keep track of contested vs uncontested threes, the general rule of thumb from multiple analytical services seems to be that contested threes are 50% lower make rate. With that in mind, Diallo would be below average for uncontested threes.

On his highlights, he appears to have a good floater in the lane, so that makes him tougher to defend in the lane b/c he isn't a 3pt shot or dunk guy.

Yes! Modern analytics greatly prefer mid-range jumpers to shots at the rim and thr...

Oh. Wait; no they don't.

Be careful. you’ll catch the wrath of Aberdeen’s fan club, some on here think he is 100% better than zoom. That assist rate that you post will make you a target. Or they’ll ignore it all together as it doesn’t fit their narrative.😄

Like seeing this. Our PGs really shouldn't be score-first types. I want our PG to ideally feed the 4 other talented positions (I hope theyre talented). We didnt have near the ball movement and fluidity this season like we had the one prior.

I'm having a hard time with that 50% rate adjustment on contested/uncontested threes. For starters, presumably that's an average, but there are clearly players who are better or worse on contested makes vs uncontested. I found this chart an NBA fan put together 8 years ago, and a similar chart here from more recently, and there are of course outliers in every direction. But the bulk of dots (un-labeled players) in chart one, and the league averages in chart 2, don't conform to the 1.5x rule. In both cases, the multiplier is less, which would suggest that Zoom Diallo either underperformed on contested 3s, overperformed on open 3s, or some combination of the two. To determine which of those possibilities is correct we need more data...

I'm a member of the Aberdeen fan club, but not because he was a better point guard than Diallo.

Diallo is far better equipped to be the lead ball handler and distributor.

Aberdeen does other things better, and I believe he is a better overall player.

What would classify as making him a better overall player?

For comparison, here are the A/T ratios for Aberdeen and Diallo from last year, Overall, in Conference and PER 40:

Aberdeen.......Overall: 30.6 mpg, 3.4/1.3 Conference: 32.3 mpg, 3.7/1.2 ...... PER 40: Overall: 6.4/2.5 Conference: 6.5/2.1
Diallo...............Overall: 29.6 mpg, 4.5/2.5 Conference: 31.0 mpg, 4.7/2.9 ...... PER 40: Overall: 6.0/3.4 Conference: 6.1/3.7

Where did I say that shooting only mid-range jumpers is preferred?
Diallo is not great from the perimeter, but he's enough of a threat that defenders have to come out. Would I love it if he were a 6'6 point guard who shoots 45% from the 3pt line, can attack the lane to dunk on defenders, and who shoots 90% from the FT line?? Absolutely.

My point is that being a 1 trick pony in the lane is easier to defend. For a offensive player getting in the paint, if you are a threat to BOTH attack the rim (which I think Diallo is good at) AND pull up for a floater from 3-5 feet away, you are more difficult to defend. A dunk/layup is better percentage, but if you have additional tools like a floater, defenders/shot blockers have to respect a hesitation in the lane for the floater, and it can open up more layups.

Hope that clears up the point I was trying to make... it wasn't about knocking the idea of attacking the rim being the best option, but moreso a good floater creating more opportunities for layups or dunks.

So Diallo had more assists and more turnovers because he is a point guard and therefore had the ball in his hands more, but Aberdeen was more efficient? Yup.

And Aberdeen had better shooting numbers, and had a much better on defensive efficiency rating (121 to 112).

A plus for Diallo? He has been coached by Danny Sprinkle who sucks bad, whereas Aberdeen was developed by Golden, who is creepy as f but is also a hell of a good coach. So maybe Diallo can develop under Pope in a way that he did not under sucky Danny Sprinkle.

That's completely fair. Now UK is going to need to sign some bigs that are excellent screeners and can free up guards in ball screen actions, and some shooters that can draw attention away from ball screen action guards. Kam Williams is one of those for sure.

I think people need to understand something. Pope told us this was going to happen. In one of his interviews he was talking about how the research was showing that the most successful teams were teams that had creators. People who could create for others. Last year it was rim protection was the stat most correlated with winning. I would be surprised if Pope doesn't recruit a whole team of creators. It seems like he is prioritizing that and positional size right now in the portal. Zoom Diallo fits on both of those criteria. I don't think he's as good as Lamont Butler yet, but I think his upside is higher. In fact if he improves as much next year as he did from his freshman to sophomore year, he could be one of the best PG's in the country next year. A lot of people are comparing him to Ashton Hagans and I think right now he's a better offensive player than Hagans was at UK. He's not as good of a defensive player. He reminds me of Andrew Harrison a lot too. If he can get his 3 point percentage up like Lamont Butler did than we could be looking at an all SEC PG and one of the best PG's in the country. I'm super stoked.

Very high praise, I hope he is close to being as good as a healthy Butler. I loved Butlers game, and would love to see Zoom tear up the creating for some good recruits to come. I think we will get some good pieces to go with him

Go cats, and go Zoom 🥳

Right. We had zero ball handlers. Having 1 is better.

Aberdeen's defensive rating was 114.4 not 121 (112.5 for Diallo). Lower is better as opposed to higher for this number anyway.

His assist-to-turnover ratio is what concerns me.
It's a valid enough concern.

But I think we'll do fine with him as long as we're not asking him to be our star. Last year stats wise he was what Marquis Teague was for us, more or less exactly. The differences in their statistics are very small and basically all balance out.

(Critically, their AST/TO ratios are within less than 1% of each other.)
