Because there are some things that just arent worth overlooking?
You aren't hiring him to be a bodyguard for your wife and he isn't asking to marry your daughter. He is looking to wrestle for your team and has successfully done it multiple times, right down the road, FIVE years later.

At the very least, a solid vetting should be done...

So his issues occurred in 2021. He has since left tOSU and has been at ISU for 3 years. Of those, he has AA'd twice(6th and 5th). If he had no issues at ISU, over that time period, why would we be so quick to dismiss a 2x AA????
Why pay big for a 1 year 149 when we already have Block at 149. If we are looking for a portal 149 allocate the money towards Zepeda.

I’m not judging this post per se but with the reference to a 2x AA, it just made me wonder. If he was not successful at ISU, does the “second chance” matter less to most people? If he was a national champ, do we overlook the major mishaps, but if he was a .500 wrestler does his baggage matter more? Or do most people take him or leave him regardless of his past success or lack of?

Soooo… Willie was doing a fast rapid prediction for the portal, he did say that he did not have some insider information on some of his predictions, but he was predicting that if Schubert goes 165 next year, he can see him at Iowa.

Really needing a 165, so hopefully we land him.

Also, will be interesting where Zepeda lands. Don’t know where he fits with Ryder being most suitable for 149.

Also, we are out on Shapiro. His current list is NcSt, UNC, and Nebraska.

So the major targets for us are Schubert and Zepeda? Anyone else? Any rumblings for who we are targeting in the portal?

(I initially put this post in the wrong thread)
I was confident in landing Schubert a week ago; I heard he took a visit to VTU and liked it there a lot. I still think he's just doing his due diligence, and like Crookham, ultimately decides on Iowa.

Michigan has to do a lot more juggling to work Zepeda in than Iowa does. Wonder what the dalliance with Ech means concerning Zepeda? Does it mean Iowa's not that confident they land Zepeda?

Heard the lack of interest in Shapiro was from Shapiro's end.

His accomplishments would be the only reason you want him to transfer, REGARDLESS of if he was already clean as a whistle. Still, the point isn't just the success. It is the fact that he was at a program for a SUBSTANTIAL amount of time AFTER the issues and has had no issues.

I am not saying take him for sure, but he is a good enough wrestler that I would check into him and see how he was thought of over those 3 years at ISU. If everything comes out crystal clean, I would definitely think he warrants consideration...

Who knows what they are offering? On top of that, we have no idea if they are getting Zepeda or not. Back up plans are important and maybe Block is already planning 157?

There are a lot of what ifs. I am not saying Ech is even CLOSE to a no brainer. I just wouldn't dismiss him out of hand and would sure spend some time digging...

Ech wrestled 141 last year. If Iowa is looking at him I would guess it is for Nassir to RS. I am not a fan and say pass, but my opinion doesn't mean ****. Zepeda is the guy I want and let him, Block, and Estrada battle for 149/157.

AJ had even more serious charges than Ech, even though they were dropped.
Yeah and most of us didn't want him either. Comparing moral equivalency with these two is a losing proposition...and I would bet there will be some season tickets dropped if Ech is brought in.

I've heard from people closely connected to their program that he's a great young man and there were a lot of extenuating circumstances in his situation. I'm still a hard pass.

What exactly would the circumstances be that would make it OK for someone to place their hands around a woman’s neck? (Unwanted…sickos…)

If you have to ask, you will never get it.

I agree. I can't believe that was the only way for a world-class athlete to get out of a physical altercation with a female. That's why I'm a hard pass.

I get your stance. I just fundamentally disagree with it. What you did in the heat of the moment, mind you no one here exactly knows what happened and never will, shouldn’t decide the rest of your life, short of the transgressions I listed earlier.

Also, he was never found guilty, correct? He pled to a misdemeanor because she refused to testify against him and actually stood up for him.

With that said, you would be adding the guy he is NOW, vs. 5 years ago. That would be the guy I would be looking at before I decided either way…

Pleading guilty is being found guilty.

So if it's in the heat of the moment, choking out your girlfriend is ok?

No way Beth lets him in right? I mean AJ can't get in after some middle fingers and slapping Zach Glazier, women strangling tops both of those.
I Hope Please GIF

I want this for you all.

When did I ever say it was Ok? In fact I have already said the opposite Mind you ,he pled guilty to a way lesser misdemeanor charge because they don’t arrest you for something so serious and then just drop the charges. That makes them look bad. Sometimes a plea like that is BY FAR the safest and most cost effective decision.

I just take the judge not lest ye be judged much more to heart than many here do. I hope those judging so harshly aren’t hypocrites with major skeletons in their own closets. In my experience the most judgmental often do…

Being arrested for a more serious crime and then pleading out to lesser charges happens all the time, for all kinds of reasons. It doesn't change the fact that he hit and choked out his girlfriend. And we're not talking about some out of shape IT nerd. Dude was one of the best freestyle wrestlers in Cuba. There's no way I'm going to believe he didn't have a way out of that argument that didn't include beating up and choking out his girl.

Yeah but haven’t your heard that in casual conversation he seemed nice? Clearly a changed man.

Actually quite the opposite. I have sinned plenty and know first hand what it feels like to be judged forever based on a poor decision. If you haven’t noticed by now nearly all my arguments on here come from what I perceive as hypocrisy. I would bet a healthy sum that nearly all judging here would completely hide and NOT do it if they had to have their worst acts exposed in the process….

He's a lot better than Nasir Bailey, that much I know for certain. If he doesn't come in as a 141 doesn't matter I guess.

👍 What is happening with all the facts on display around here lately? Is this some Twilight Zone episode and nobody wants to own it?
