I'm happy for her. I also don't understand whatsoever the business logic behind propping up the WNBA, let alone doubling down on it, a move the recent collective bargaining agreement represents.

It's a bet on Caitlin Clark's gravity. The WNBA has been a proposition that loses money, but they did make money for the first time last year. It took the NBA a long time to be marketable in this country too. King, you are old enough to remember when the NBA was a struggling league with the playoffs being on tape delay. The Bird-Magic dynamic put the league on another level. I'm willing to give it a chance and see where this goes.

Yeah, no idea where the $ is coming from, but good for her.
The WNBA got its own 2.2 billion dollar media rights deal when the NBA signed their 76 billion dollar deal. Combined deal with Disney, NBC Universal, and Prime Video.

The product just isn't there. I've tuned in to Fever games to watch CC, but the rest of the league is below average at best. In my opinion the product is about as good as pick up games between HS kids at a local gym. A few people have game, but everyone else throws up ridiculous shots with bodies flying all over the place. Just can't watch it. I'd rather give that kind of money to firemen or teachers.

But they are still heavily subsidized by the NBA, right?

You may like CC's style of play, but CC is not the best player. In fact, the Fever played better when CC got hurt and was an Overtime loss from reaching the WNBA Finals without CC. It may not be you, but a lot of people are biased against these girls due to the sexual lifestyles of some, race, and other factors. If you are objective, Aja Wilson is the best player in the league right now and it's not close. There is a reason her team has won 3 of the last 4 WNBA Championships. As far as financial impact, CC is that girl and the reason the players are getting paid right now. She has a ways to go to be the best player. She has to get tougher, at least try to play some defense. The people that want to see the league succeed, also, want to see CC succeed. However, no one is going to roll over and give it to her. She has to toughen up and take it.

Yes, but they are getting closer to being self-sufficient. They had over a 20 million dollar surplus last year and that doesn't take into account the new TV deal. There is a reason that a lot of businessmen want in on the WNBA right now. A new expansion franchise started in San Francisco last year. Two new franchises in Portland and Toronto starting this year. Cleveland is getting one in 2028. Detroit getting one in 2029. Philadelphia getting one in 2030. Don't know where all of this is going, but something is happening when it comes to Women's Basketball.

I didn't realize our old nemesis, Sophie Cunningham, also plays for the Fever.

Yes. This most recent TV deal that has gained them so much ground was only possible because the NBA insisted it be rolled in with their TV negotiations.

So typical of this board. OP starts a thread celebrating a Gamecock WBB Legend. This is the only post celebrating that.

It’s just more important for y’all to pizz on WBB ad nauseam.

Hope she doesn't pull a Deebo Samuel and stop producing after clinching the big contract.
I can't see that happening. And if Aliyah ever thought about easing up on the gas, her parents would give her a whooping. ;)
