Damn elite 8 run really hasn't done anything for Iowa this portal season
Yeah, I'm sure they'd rather win than lose, but I'm guessing a lot of these players care more about money than anything else.

Sad reality is winning is probably 4th or lower on their concerns.
Marquette is a basketball only school and no doubt shelled out some big $.
I think I read at some point that Marquette was one of the schools showing interest in McKeever. So at least this seems like one less suitor we would need to worry about on that front.
The issue here is I think this was one of the two big men we’ve been linked to. We better hope McKeever comes through.

Well of course. But if average Joe is going to ***** that we can't keep up then maybe they can at least pony up the minimum $200 per year.
I also think there is no reason we don't have at least 10,000 season ticket holders or rich alum that love Hawkeye success enough that they would be willing to do the $1,000 per year. That's $10,000,000 each year not counting any big dawgs. And if we build that momentum (just like our elite 8 run) we would be a sneaky player nationally.
Maybe we can offer them a lifetime revenue percentage of Swarm Voda sales? Just thinking outside the box. Or maybe Tom Arnold can give Ben a blank check?

“this portal season” is far from finished and Iowa is in contact with numerous highly regarded players, several of which are flying in to Iowa for a formal visit.
I guess it comes down to this: you either trust McCollum’s recruiting process or you don’t. BM has been pretty up front about how particular he is when evaluating prospects. Let the process play out.
Seriously, if we can’t get a solid big rim protector we are going to be relegated to the middle of the BIG for the next 50 years. Something’s gotta change.
Iowa pays in dimes what other schools pay in dollars. So much for all that money we supposedly had. 8 days since portal opened no additions. Meanwhile other schools in the Big 10 are ( contenders ) are killing it. I wonder if we ran off that NC guard with a paltry offer.

I am assuming we aren’t paying Coon millions of dollars or am I missing something? Obviously we can’t recruit the equivalent of the Fab 5, but how about a Wagler type who flew under the radar in his own state…

Here’s the thing about high school kids. You develop them and they start playing at a high level then Louisville buys them off your roster. You become a feeder program for the rich. That’s not college basketball.

Fran didnt coach defense, and the program in some respects was undisciplined. As for players not wanting to come to Iowa, I think there has always been some truth to that because of the rural nature of the state. It doesn't help that the national media feeds into the idea that iowa hoops has always sucked which we all know isn't true. "Iowa made the elite 8 OMG Ben has to be a genius, or how can Ben turn down a UNC interview for Iowa?" These are perceptions a school like Illinois for example has never had to fight despite being just as rural as Iowa. When recruits see Illinois they think "Chicago" and when they visit they see isn't too bad. A lot of kids visit Iowa and love it, but when they go home and talk to their friends and peers about schools i gaurantee you they take a lot of **** about Iowa because of the people just not knowing.
As of this morning, Duke has 0 portal commits. Kentucky and Kansas each have 1. I guess nobody wants to play for those schools either.
I think people need to take in account for where Iowa is. It’s like football. People make a huge deal for when programs bring in a boatload of players compared to some that don’t. However, some forget retention. Iowa among P4 had lowest players enteral portal. And in KF era always been like that so naturally we aren’t adding as much as most B10 or P4 schools are. Out biggest issue was we had a big senior class and with # of fruits is why we signed more than normal but still on low end.
last year McCollum started from nothing. Entire Iowa roster in portal and kept Koch and built his team from scratch with good idea of the 5-6 drake kids coming over. This year we got 2 spots we need. C and PG. I like many fill lot better if we had secured one by now but even before we fill these 2 still in a better situation a week into the portal than last year and lot of schools who still have guys entering.
To be fair he didn't really build his team from scratch. He knew he was bringing his entire team over from Drake. Was able to retain Koch ( really good work) and get Folgueras. So basically he only had to get Folgueras from the portal and re-recruit Koch who always wanted to be a Hawkeye.
