So assuming more signings, is the idea the Hawks go into next season with the 1, 2, and 5 positions (starting) locked down and the 3,4 TBD based on fall competition? Again, not knowing who else is signed but seems like you got some versatility with TS, AW, JH, and MW competing for the starting 3/4 spots.

How many players were on last years team? Try counting......Try again. My point was 11 would be a low number. Right now were at 8.....

Oooops, I misread roster for rotation. Hopefully Jan can sign a couple more, but we have a pretty good team going forward next season, but we cannot have injuries or at least season ending.

If you want to frame it with actual players and eliminate the Jada's and KJ's then say that. Still they were on scholarship and practiced. Again if we went with 10 what happens when the flue hits and we have the yearly ACL tear? Maybe we can put a wig on one of the managers?
Jada and Rodriguez did not practice. Mallegni had her tonsils out early didn't practice for 6-8 weeks, Johnson hurt off and on, McCabe out most of the big schedule. Jan operated with 10 most of the season.

In an interview with Barrett she said they wanted another perimeter shooter and a flex four. That takes us to 10. They may bring in another 1 or 2 for bench depth. I doubt the roster will be more than 12.

This (multiples injuries) happens with many teams. And it can happen again with Iowa. Because of that, teams don’t start the season with a roster of 10 players, and if any team does that, they end up having problems. It’s better to start with 14 and end up with 10 than to risk starting with 10 and end up with 6 players. Of course, it’s not easy to get eight players in the Portal to have a team with 14, but a team with 10 is a very big risk of ruining the season. A roster with 12 is an acceptable number. We have 8 on the roster, 4 are missing.

I think this is the right question and gets at JJs remaining targets. Sign 2, get to 10, and fill with walk-on type players. Or sign another 4 legit players and really have legit depth.
I honestly think that a roster of 10 to 12 is good, I don't think you need that 14 person roster anymore, its not like you need 14 to scrimmage at practice as they have a guys grey squad for that.

I don’t know if I understand little about basket, but from what I observe from the teams, the PG position is the most important and strategic one. No team has just one true PG like Iowa does. UConn for example has three 5-star PGs and signed a PG from Serbia to have four PGs, which I think is alot, but having two true PGs is the minimum, three PGs is the standard, having only Chit Chat as the true PG is a huge negligence IMO. It seems crazy to risk so much and run the risk of having to improvise at the position that is the brain of the team on the court. For me, the biggest urgency is to have a strong SF with 6-1 or 6-2 and a true PG of the bench who is good enough to play 10-15 minutes at a level close to Chit Chat.

Every so often players are better and hard workers than given credit for.
Deserve a look or opportunity. Probably humble and thankful and culture players.
2 to consider ......

The depth pieces to fill out generally come in weeks 2 and 3, as rosters and starter positions are filled, and then the real money offers are staring the players in the face. Iowa is on the record for 10 players which if all are healthy is fine, In most cases we are carrying 2-3 lower quality or injured players. So running with 10 legit players is not a terrible issue, assuming you can remain healthy. I would prefer 11 to 12, but we will see.

Ill take a shorter athlete that can jump over a taller guard who cant. People are getting to hung up on height just like star rankings. Rebounding is about heart and and positioning, give me a smaller guard that has some hops over any taller one that their feet are stuck to the floor.
When's the last time you saw a shorter athlete jump over a taller guard? I jest but there are very, very few women that have hops. Hannah was close so we need somebody to replace her rebounding production and a guard ain't it.

Assuming that everyone on the roster will stay healthy is a very risky bet. There is a reason why rosters with 10 names are not the standard. Injuries are common and frequent. Making a roster of 10 and praying that nothing happens is very amateur.

I definitely know that’s not true. I’ll even add a nice bottle of wine. Like a good bottle.

Once you’re triggered on a message board you’ve outed yourself.

But thanks for the useless info.
Wow. You need to check yourself dude. You have a WAY overinflated opinion of yourself. You're just another schmuck posting his own opinion on a message board. Anything else is just you stroking yourself.....

Going to have a tough time convincing players to be the 12th/13th player in the new transfer portal era.

Iowa had a few players that had no chance at regular minutes that stuck around inflating our roster size. I feel like that won’t fly anymore.
Iowa's in the same boat as everyone else, BUT you can't have a team with 8 or 9 players. Once this portal thing settles, there will be A LOT of players who do not have homes. That's where will have to mine for the remaining players, just like most of the non blue bloods.

12 would probably be fine. Just saying 10 is cutting it too close. We seem to lose at least one player every year to a significant injury.

As stated Iowa has run with many rosters where it really only had 10 viable players. Its not something you should make common place but I would understand the reasoning. Its also not amateur but it could be a flaw.

Whens the last time the Iowa women's team had a walk on? Can't remember that ever happening, and now the roster is total available spots. So it makes no difference if their on a scholarship or not.
Megan Considine in 2010, and I think were were a couple of others. At the time, Lisa's practice was to have a 12 player roster, and sometimes the injury bug messed with that.

I remember Lisa having to bring on an Iowa softball player because the team was so short on guards following some injuries. Can't remember her name though.

Tania Davis, a 5'3" guard for the Iowa Hawkeyes (2015-2019), was an active rebounder despite her size, often using her speed to grab boards and initiate fast breaks. She averaged roughly 2.9 to 3.2 rebounds per game during her collegiate career, with a career-high 10 rebounds against Northern Illinois in 2017.

Kachine Alexander and Sam Logic both 5'9 and both in top 10 career rebounding, you don't have to be tall if you have the skill set

I went to the official rosters and counted the listed athletes. I did not check on scholarship status. Statuses. Statusi.
https://hawkeyesports.com/sports/wbball/stats/season/2012-13
I went to the link and checked. From 2013-14 to 2016-17, Hailey Schneden was a walk-on. But she was awarded a scholarship in her senior year because there was one available (13 total scholarships back then). From 2017-18 to 2020-21, Zion Sanders was a walk-on. Sanders was added to the roster after a try out in 2017 because there weren't enough healthy players on the team.

Edit: Ah, there weren't enough players in 2017-18 because there were only 11 players on the roster to start with and then freshman Jinaya Houston quit the team shortly after arriving on campus. This tells me Bluder and Jensen feel 11 players is the minimum number needed for the squad.

You can get away with a guard who can rebound but thinking 3 or 4 are going to rebound collectively at a high level means you're going to get killed on the offensive glass.
