Several of those guys got 17U money just to sign up. I can't blame them in this world today.
I hope the Tour changes it's policies so that people who aren't employees and aren't even guaranteed playing opportunity from year to year can play where ever they want and earn as much as they can.

There is almost always a problem when a small group effectively has a monopoly on a sport and continuously takes advantage of the people actually providing the entertainment. They never seem to do the right thing until some sort of pressure comes from the outside. NFL / AFL / USFL, NBA / ABA, NCAA and the law and now PGA Tour and LIV. It was when they started whining about losing world golf rankings and not being able to play certain events because they weren’t ranked high enough.

This is pretty much it in a nutshell.
1) Some ridiculously rich, oil-snorting Saudis got bored and decided that they needed a shiny, new toy, so they tossed a few billion into a pot to create a new golf league.
2) Since Saudis royally suck at golf, they had n choice but to poach the best talent that money could buy from around the world
3) Knowing that no one with any sense was going to leave the tour for this unorganized $hitshow, they started throwing anywhere from $100M-500M at guys to get them to simply show up for the following 2-5 years.
4) Unsurprisingly, a few washed up pros and a few younger players that clearly care about little more than money and the opportunity to be able to work even less than 5-10 days/mo took them up on their offer
5) To the shock of absolutely no one, LIV failed to score anything remotely close to a lucrative media deal, so their exhibition events could only be found on some combination of YouTube, the CW, and wherever the 17 you can find them now
6) Also to the surprise of no one, pouring literally billions into a tour with no real way to market or reach a half decent audience ended up actually not being the best business venture, so now we're reaching the end
