Any of you ever been members of a Country Club? The athletic dept of most schools have to operate like a Country Club. There are some members of the Country Club that use the golf course and restaurant/bar and that's it, nothing else. Other members play tennis, swim, and eat and that's it, nothing else. Some that only use the restaurant and pool and maybe play bingo on game night and attend holiday parties and that's it. None of those different activities would fund the entire Country Club standalone by themselves, but put all the different type members together and many clubs operate fine.
I've been a member of 3 different clubs over the years and have seen this happen at every one of them. The club will decide the pool isn't worth having because of insurance cost, cost of chemicals, electricity to run the pumps, lifeguards etc. so they will close the pool to save money. What happens then? They save money obviously from the pool expenses being cut, but, lose members that never used the golf course or played tennis but they came to the club to swim and eat. Since the wife and kids could no longer swim all that was left for them was maybe the restaurant so the wives said screw this we aren't paying this membership just to fund golf. Those members helped fund the golf course and everything else w/ their dollars even though they never used the golf course or tennis.
One club we were members of needed the tennis courts resurfaced and overhead lights replaced for night play. The club and members argued awhile but the club finally said nope too expensive we need some new equipment for the golf course and closed them. The members that regularly played tennis took their restaurant money and pool money and golf money and terminated their memberships. The club didn't have to resurface courts or buy lighting but they lost revenues because the tennis member dues were gone. One club we were members of cut the restaurant open days from 6 days a week to 3 on Friday, Saturday, Sunday only to save labor cost, gas, electricity etc. The members that regularly ate lunch, brought customers or friends to dinner, and the ladies that played bridge two days a week said screw this and pulled out.
So, those that advocate closing the pool or tennis courts or restaurant or whatever need to account for lost contributions from those that are going to say screw this if we can't swim we aren't going to pay for golf. We have lots of donors that are going to say the same thing, no more women's basketball or soccer or baseball or whatever are going to walk and say screw this I'm going and taking my NIL and 1878 or Excellence Fund money with me. Donors that support those non revenue sports fund way more than just those sports with their NIL, 1878 and Excellence fund donations.
In your financial scenario doghair are you accounting for those that don't give a damn about football but love their school and their women's basketball or soccer or baseball or whatever sport and will take ALL their other donations with them when their sport is cut because they don't give a damn about football? Just a thought...................
