Coach Roussell is being introduced as the new coach today. He has his work cut our for him... The good news for UVA is I don't think any of their players in the portal have announced a new home as of yet.

I think Kymora Johnson may have visited Dawn Staley and the Gamecocks last weekend but I haven't seen anything out of her/them.

She did indeed visit UofSC, but immediate commits to the first school visited are pretty common in this shortened portal period. So given no announcement, Johnson either wants to see what other schools have to offer or she is being charitable and is willing to meet the new UVA coach. The former does seem much more likely than the latter though.

I think we got a good player in Gabby White. Her high school summer playing days shows me that we have a good player. She is fast and has strong hands. She shoots the ball well and she can beat her defender with the ball. I think she will be a valuable player for the Heels. I know her mom will be happy she is going to be back home.

So help me here guys. 3 transfer portal commitments thus far, does that mean now currently we have 1 available scholarship left for a player?

15 max can dress out. That is also tehe "roster limit: now in WBB.

10 returning platers not in the portal: Barker, Kelly, Toomey, Hull, Thomas, Zubich, Queiroz, Brooks, Ashtakhova, & Bofia.
1 incoming recruit (Harpring)
1 portal player signed (Akot)
2 portal players publicly committed (Clardy & Burrows)
1 unnamed portal player seemingly committed as indicated by CB on social media today (assumption is Gabby White)

That fills all 15 spots unless something above changes.

Multiple posters have pointed out that the House v NCAA settlement has allowed former walk-ons to remain on the roster above the roster limit in other sports. This might allow Syd Barker to not be counted. However, she was awarded a scholly prior to the court settlement, and WBB already had a 15 player scholly max and a 15 player dress out max; nothing changed in this particular sport. So my guess is that this carve out would not apply here. And even if is did, that means someone cannot dress out each game. If no one is injured that is a pretty brutal choice.

So I feel pretty confident we are at the 15 player max and there is no viable way to change that. that is provided no one else leaves the program between now and April 20th, which also seems unlikely.

Has Gabby's commitment been posted yet. For those who do not know, she is Joanne Aluka-White's daughter, our Associate Head Coach. When you look at her numbers, two things stand out. 1) she was the only freshman who got playing time coming off of the bench this past season. 2) Her stats were higher than some of the veterans that were coming off of the bench from VA this past season which is pretty impressive. Here are her Stats:

2025-26
• Career-high 13 pts vs Northwestern St. (11/24)
• Pulled down 6+ reb, five times
• Recorded six assists in a win over SMU (12/29)
• Recorded seven points and three assists off the bench at Duke (1/15)
• Set career highs in points (22), rebounds (12), and assists (6) off the bench in a 3OT win at Georgia Tech (1/8)
• Scored 15 pts and recorded seven rebounds off the bench at Virginia Tech (2/1)
• Made her first career start against Miami (10 pts, 5 reb, 1 ast) (2/5)
• Scored 11 pts and recorded nine assists off the bench in a win at Stanford (2/15)
BACKGROUND
• 2025 McDonalds All-American Nominee
• Four-Star prospect ranked No. 94 in the ESPN HoopGurlz Top 100 recruiting rankings
• Competed for Seaforth High School
• Scored 1,975 high school points
• Recorded over 1,100 high school rebounds
• Four-time conference player of the year
• Four-time all-conference first team
• Four-time all-district team
• Three-time all-state selection
• 2024 Chatham County Female Athlete of the Year
• Named most outstanding player player following her performance in the 2023 state championship game
• Led her team to a National Association of Christian Athletes championship in 2023
• Four-time team MVP
• Competed for CP3 Flames on the AAU circuit
• Three-time Nike EYBL performer of the week
Looking at her stats her freshman, I pretty much similar to NB's stats which suggest she is or will be a major contributor right away. She is by no means a project player, a walk on player, etc. She will be in the rotation if she signed with us today. She is a coach's daughter which suggest she has been well prepared to play at the college level. That is what the stats at VA this past year are telling me.

My concern too. But doesn’t seem like it’s happening.
That sucks because no offense to Toomey and Blanca isnt it to compete for ACC title IMO. Last year's team we could shift Harris to the post position and defend the strongest player. These 2 severely lack footspeed and lateral movement. I guess it is what it is

I'm going to be honest here, I am a little disappointed that coach couldn't reel in one of these big named stars in the portal or via asking out their scholarship aka decommit. But coach knows what she's doing , I guess picking up one huge name star she probably thought would be a chemistry problem.

We do not have the NIL money for a big star. A well-circulated email from CB last year went around that showed she was asking for more money from Bubba - she needed 1.5 more cause the asking prices were around $500k-$700k... she did not get it.

I wonder if what they have seen from Bonfia played a role here. I believe she is really talented. I think Thomas had untapped potential too if she can work her butt off this offseason.
We will see. I know alot here have hope for Thomas. I just dont see it AT ALL! Toomey just has to improve shooting. She was one of the worst 3 point shooters on the team last year or just take her game to the post. She gets stronger and embraces the block, she can be a 14 ppg and 8 reb player

I think we have the NIL for just one. See KH
We were a finalist for Bjorn after landing Harpring in the same class. I do not know if we completely matched the Texas offer, but I assume we had to at least be competitive to be in her final two.

The difference is, teams like Texas and other Final Four teams have money for five or more star players. We could spring for two, maybe three at most any given season.

Also, when you are second tier in money, you have to find players who value what your program has to offer as a part of their decision, and avoid players who are solely interested in a bidding war. We were not going to be the destination for Aliyah Chavez no matter what, but the very next year Harpring was viable as a top 3 recruit.

Finally, when players like Aarnisalo and Grant ask for more after a break out season, you have to make sure the money still aligns with market value. We cant just agree to giant raises. That can make it hard to retain players when other schools like TCU and UCLA are whispering to their agents. It is not a coincidence that schools like UofSC and Uconn can continue to retain pretty much all of their good players every year in the portal era. Yes, winning and a big national platform for exposure continue to help immensely. But they can match any offer to their starting players and key reserves.

Do you think our roster will be better than last year’s given the development of the people that stayed in the replacement of the people that left with our portal additions? I don’t know I’m legitimately asking and I also wonder how we’re gonna compare to Duke State, Louisville, Notre Dame and anybody else I might’ve left out

I think we’ll have the same level of shooting and that Kate will be more dynamic with the ball in her hands than anyone we had last year.

Overall if we want to be a better team a couple things need to be true:
-Kate needs to come in healthy and ready
-Reniya needs to be at her sophomore level ag a minimum (transfer guards are fine but if she’s not healthy our ceiling is probably sweet 16 again)
-Ciera needs to take another step forward or Blanca needs to take a huge leap

That’s assuming the transfers perform at the level they did last year and nobody regresses

It seems like Dook and Louisville have the top NIL pools. We along with State and ND will keep battling them for the top five positions.

Unfortunately, we have limited funds and have to be smart about using them. When our players have breakout years, other top teams with more funds are going to poach them. We need to be smart about replacing them. I think we made solid decisions this year.

I think the team makeup is better for post season success. Taller and more athletic bodes well. If you look at last year's team CB dang near was a magician with getting a team that shot that poorly to sweet 16. Ultimately it depends on just how good Harpring is. If she is as good as she seems. This team is better and extremely deep. One strong post from final 4 IMO

dook on paper right now is the clear #1 team in the ACC. They return 3rd team A-A Fournier, two other starters, bring in three stellar freshmen (one out this past season with injury), and landed Crump, a roughly the 12th best player in the portal. The lost two great starters to graduation like us, but no one that matters in the portal.

Louisville is also shaping up to be just as good, but they are still working on their portal haul. They landed Zam Jones, roughly the 13th best player in the portal. They have a top 20 portal recruit who just visited and the #3 HS recruit about to visit. Land either of those and they should improve over last year.

NCSU should struggle again unless they do some late portal magic. They lost a lot, basically building their team again around two great pieces: HM A-A Pierre, 1st team All-ACC Zoe Brooks. The rest of their roster is unremarkable and they have the #40 HS recruit and no portal commits right now. But in thoery they do have some money to spend so TBD

ND is too early to tell. Once again a complete rebuild around Hidalgo. But thy have some pieces through recruiting coming in. (#5 recruiting class)

Bottom line for UNC: what we got out of the portal is probably on par with what we lost in the portal. the most unfortunate aspect is we traded three young guns with multiple years remaining for 3 work horse seniors, so a long-term future lost was shored up with short-term solution. But that is the nature of the beast now.

But that does not include the two seniors we lost to graduation. replacing those as well (4 starters total and one high ceiling freshman) will require the freshmen to come in and shine and the returning players to take big steps forward. But tons of top 25 teams are dealing with similar uncertainty, so we will probably remain ranked 10-20 in the preseason.

I disagree with clear. This year's dook team and ours were equals. I think Akot matches up really well with Fournier. I dont think this year's team will have much separation. Louisville is the best team coming back IMO. Is it a huge gap, no. Notre Dame with Hidalgo cant be overlooked especially if they make some noise in portal.

Will be a fun season

dook finished the #5 team in the country, won the ACC outright and the ACC tournament. After Dec 7 they went 24-3, only losing to Clemson, UNC and eventual champion UCLA. They were a step above us.

Going into next year:
Remaining roster:
  • we lose 4 starters (two 2nd team All-ACC seniors & the #11 & #12 players in portal)
  • they lose 2 starters (1st team and 2nd team All-ACC) but return the 2nd best player in the ACC, two other starters and the ACC 6th player of the year. Zero portal losses.
Additions:
  • they add: #6 2025 recruit, #13, #15, #28, #40 2026 recruits, and the 13th best player in the portal who was the #5 2025 recruit. That is effectively adding the #3 2026 recruiting class and the #4 2025 recruiting class in the same year.
  • we add: #2 & #55 2026 recruits (#11 ranked class), #28, #36, #45 & #89 portal players
So they were better than us, they return more and they add more.

No, that is not a landslide, we will compete. But they are definitely a top 6 team, positioned to compete for a final four spot, while we are top 10-20 team. That is a meaningful difference in D1 WBB.

edit: i definitely agree that Akot should match well with Fournier. UNC has contained or outright shut down Fournier in most every game we played against her (though her defense against us was great too.) The exception being the game Ustby was out injured. She ate that day.

I think this team is more talented than last year. We have depth pieces that are solid players coming off the bench now. There should not be a drop out of scoring when coming off the bench. We definitely have the guards. There is not going to be a drop off there between KH, CC, GW, and RK. The 3 position should be solid with NB, LH, and SB. There should not be too much of drop off production wise from this spot as well. Akot is a solid replacement for NH for the 4 position. This is where things get tricky. If TQ can make that big jump from her freshman year to her sophomore year and NB can contribute, then we should be okay. The 5 spot is my major concerned. CT showed massive improvements from last year to the year before. I believe that this past season was the first time she felt 100% health wise and she was able to play a full year which was a confidence booster, etc. CT should now know that she will need to continue to get stronger and I am counting on the strength and conditioning coach to help her to another leap forward. She needs to work on improving her footwork, and 3-point shooting. BT needs a lot of work. I think she can do it if she has the mindset to want to do it. If I was her, I would work on sprints, being able to run up and down floor quicker. She could work with the track team on this. She needs to work on conditioning, the nutritionist needs to put her on a protein diet to get rid of the unnecessary weight, more muscle, and getting in the weight room and get stronger upper body wise and lower body wise. Work on her jump shots, FT shoots, around the rim shots, baby hook, 10 feet and in. Her and CT are the key for next season. If CB and staff do not think BT can get it done then they need to find a 5 in the portal, but they cannot wait too long. Go Heels!

With an open scholarship now open I'd look at Grace Oliver from Wake Forest

She's a 6'1 Foward who averaged 14.3 points and 6.1 rebounds per game, shooting an ACC-leading 60.4% from the field and shot 38.7% from 3.

With Akot and Oliver we would have two of the top 10 FG% shooters in the nation
