The Barnyard: State of Carolina's Starting Arms

Jason’s ERA is helped a little due to the fact that 5 of the runs he’s given up have been unearned (not all unearned runs are created equal). I did expect him to be a little more consistent and a little more dominant this year. Command seems to be the culprit…his walk goal is almost equal to last year already in 38 less innings!

let’s hope our three starters can peak as the season nears its end. I feel like elite starting pitching would make this team a real CWS title contender.

^ the million dollar question. Important to keep in mind that things are currently great (30-6-1) and this discussion only comes from the bar being so high due to Glauber having a freshman all-american season.

I think the relative lack of length/dominance from Lynch and Decaro the last month makes the Glauber question harder.. If your goal is winning 2/3 games from here on out, keeping flexibility w/ Walker and Glauber could help you? But at what point does Glauber earn a game with his name on it? Is Boaz a guy who needs starter prep/rest, making him less valuable from pen? Do we use Exam break to press reset?

Out of all those questions I’m more concerned about finding production out of LF/DH. Hynek .182/French .143/Kellis .200 in ACC play. Is it Nunez? Need some guys to step up here

The sport is about peaking in May not April. Would love to see our top 2 arms find their groove down the stretch and let Forbes/Gaines/Jackson play chess in the regional

as usual ... awesome information and tremendous insight from coach ... if more "game thread" posters listened to these weekly interviews, in-game comments and discussions might be waaaaaaay more productive and far less emotional

thanks, Coach Forbes

That’s a little surprising. Of the three current starters, I feel Jason struggled the most in the Clemson series. And I just don’t see For es replacing Jason in the rotation. I’d like to think that Folger’s performance Sunday in a spot where we really needed depth and he gave it to us would keep him in the rotation. The only “TBA” I could think of right now would be order…if you wanted to push Ryan up to Friday and Jason back. Screws with Ryan’s rest a little though.

Didn't say anything would change, just that it was TBA ahead of their meeting to discuss it.

IMO leaving it alone is ideal, but they've shown throughout the years that adjustments can come when they are winning too.....

Still like Globe out of the pen. Similar comparisons as Lynch at the same point in their inaugural seasons with Globe preforming a tick higher than Ryan from my recollections last year with McDuffie partially overshadowing Lynch's performances. Main difference is I think Boaz is much better suited as a starter than a bullpen guy. Obviously this may change come postseason, but I feel we're in a good spot right now. Interested to see how Jackson Rose fits in towards the tail-end. With McDuffie, Matthijs and Seagraves seemingly solid bullpen guys, it gives coaches the freedom to play around with the lineup a bit.

“With McDuffie, Matthijs and Seagraves seemingly solid bullpen guys” is my only real concern with pitching… Duff is the only guy of that group I’d trust for an inning in a tight high level game right now. Not sure why, but MM’s fastball is just really VULNERABLE, and I’m still not sure why Cam’s velocity isn’t back/ or consistent. Seems to be a symptom related to his effectiveness somehow. Just not sure if it’s on purpose to gain more control, or if it’s an injury thing.

About all of your hand wringing, I am not certain.

But Nunez needs to play. About that, I am certain.

I am with you, but really worried about Matty and Camron.

I like Matthijs but he is hurting us right now. I say move him to midweek work until he proves he can help us on the weekends
I agree, but I'm not sure what to do. Matty is not pitching like Matty. His command is off a little. His velo is down a little. He was injured, after all.

Can he adjust and be effective, nonetheless?

I feel the same as you @THEChapelthrill. I do not trust Matty and Cam at all right now. It’s Glauber and Mcduffie out of the pen in tight games. I might would throw Jackson Rose in there as well.
Matty hasn't pitched the same since the injury. Not sure if its just a confidence issue. We hope he comes around because Carolina will need him in Omaha.

I don’t think Matty is all too different than he was two years ago. So many of the wins he got in the Vulture period came because we didn’t start scoring runs until the 5th or 6th innings most games. You go back and look and that tailed off toward the end of the season and then last year pre-injury he was getting hit pretty regularly. I think the crazy run of wins kind of inflated a collective memory of his stuff, but he’s always been hittable. I do think he works hard, competes, is capable of being “on” a lot of the time, is a good leader, etc. just has never been one of our dominant arms.

So ask yourself
How many really good baseball schools would like our collection of pitchers?
Yea-probably most of them
