To be fair, we don’t know what conversations were held behind closed doors. Rumors are BMC was only offering a fraction of what Alvaro got for last season. For all we know, Ben might have suggested to him it would be in his best interest to move on.

Not to belabor the point, but Iowa needs backcourt scoring and a rim protector.
He would have been being paid more than I am.

Yep. I think there's a reality that, with a new 5 likely coming in via the portal and Thompson and Harris coming online as options at the 4, Alvaro's minutes would have declined, right along with his NIL income.
This. ^^ I liked Alvaro and am a little bummed to see him move on. But the Hawks have the most depth and "solutions" in that area next year (taller, forward type guys and that can shoot well from the outside.) But realistically...replacing his "minutes" and production next year do NOT look like a problem. As so many have said, many times, we need a PG and a "5". Here's hoping...

Well, yeah. What kind of idiot goes into the teaching profession to get paid? 🙄😉
This reminds me...I used to work security at Case IH plant over in Illinois when I was going to college. An engineer walked by watching me study - job was stupid easy - and asked where I went to college and what I was studying for. When I said teacher he asked, "Why would you spend 15,000 a year to be a teacher?" Not that he was wrong, but I noticed his T A&M belt buckle and replied, "What do you know? You're an Aggie." That ended the conversation.

And if we're really fortunate as "just fans", maybe the Big Ten and Sports in general will create a couple more streaming services for us to 💵pony up💵 for to watch our favorite teams, to help pay for all of these great "opportunities" for these children. Can't wait!
“just fans” are continuing to pay for those services ….which points to the fact that - despite all the whining about NIL and transfers - college football and basketball is more popular than ever. The networks are exploiting record viewer interest.

The breaking point for “just fans” may arrive some time in the future but probably not the near future. Everyone has their personal budget breaking point. For me, for the couple of Hawkeye games each season only available by subscription, I will plan a visit to a Hawkeye-friendly pub/bar. If they lose I will at least enjoy a couple drinks and a sandwich. If they win I’ll enjoy it even more.

Also the fact that we got Coon had something to do with it

Hopefully not derailing this thread, but since most of Sports discussions these days focus on money primarily (barf), I think it's appropriate.

Anyway, not that I think politicians solve anything most days (they don't), I did find it interesting in an article I saw this morning that they are looking into the NFL behemoth as it relates to moving games to all these different streaming services and how it affects consumers. Well duh, it affects consumers negatively if you have to have additional cost added to cable or whatever your current primary source is that you're already paying for NFL content even if you don't personally watch it. It's clearly a racket for the rich to get richer. Duh.

As per normal I'm not expecting much to come from it, but it would sure be nice to watch NFL mid week games on a F'ing network like it's been for the majority of our lifetime's, and to not have to research where it actually is on, and if I have the streaming service already or have to add another one 💸.

And IIRC, when the Big Ten Network first started, they had Multiple channels to access ( they weren't all HD but you could easily find it and watch it). That has morphed into Big Ten Plus, i.e. pay us more.

So good luck to Alvaro, we hardly knew ya kid. SMH

Thinking about this a little more; Al probably doesn't have any aspirations to play in the NBA, and he's not projected to be good enough to be drafted anyway. His plan is likely make bank here, then after he graduates, go back home to his family and play in the Euro League. It's more his style, he'll be close to home, and he'll have millions in the bank from playing in college. As long as he's smart with his money, he'll be set for life.

Not true at all
Well, it's true for me. If it isn't for you, fine, but I can speak for myself, as I have several times in this thread alone. To me, losing the guy who played a key role in getting Iowa to places it hadn't been for decades only days after it happened puts a damper on my enthusiasm. Overall, as I've said in previous posts, it's likely a win-win--Iowa and Alvaro will both be better off by parting ways. But it still leaves a shadow for now . . . speaking only for myself, of course.

Teaching is sooooo important. My hats off to all teacher

Well this 78 year old taught math for 41 years and coached boys basketball for 27. Lots of great memories but must have missed something when it came to $$, Still worked part time subbing untill 3 years ago. Would have been nice to have gotten a few more bills. Not the kind you receive in the mail.

I am not as worried about it. You have to look at players body of work. What you’re experiencing is a phenomenon called “Peak-End Theory.” We tend to remember the highs of an experience, and the end. He had a great ride with us, but he was inconsistent all year. The kid has confidence, but that doesn’t make him an all around player. The next school will likely see his inconsistent tendencies as well.

He is a foreign born ball player who came to the USA to become a professional ball player. With no guarantee of making the NBA and speculation of him being asked to take a pay cut and another team paying more I can’t blame him.
This is the highest earning potential for a year he will have in his entire life. He’d be stupid not to transfer. Nobody should blame him. Not only is it a business decision, it’s a life decision. He’s going to have several hundred thousand dollars more in his bank account when he starts his post collegiate career playing in a league that definitely won’t be the NBA. Staying at Iowa does nothing for his life long term.

So yeah, it sucks a guy that did legendary **** in 2 games is moving on, but there is no reason to think less of him.

I say - congrats and thank you.

That's fair.

Me? I'm still just as jazzed about Iowa hoops as I was before AF entered the portal, and more than I've been in a long time, because with two open slots on the roster, I look forward to seeing who Ben gets to fill them. Hopefully the needed PG and C. They could be very good players, and I like a lot of the other players we have coming back, as well as the newcomers. There's plenty to be optimistic about IMO.

You knew what you were getting into when you started teaching. Not much for pay but ipers for retirement. Not saying you shouldn’t get paid more and I think teachers should. I get that you liked it. It’s like me saying I like making pizzas at Casey’s for 10 bucks an hour. Even though I know I’m not gonna make much money. Who made that choice?

I don’t know why but I’m just waiting for a SEC school like Bama, Kentucky or Texas to over spend for Alvaro.

Which good for him, I don’t blame him, but watch come next Jan and Feb fans of the school who will be applauding the signing will be same ones griping about how we spent this much and only getting this much production out of him.
