Bump - can’t believe I can’t find a more recent dedicated Iowa thread.

Anyway, sounds like Iowa’s splash hire to replace Bobby Telford is …. Jacob Warner🎉🎊

The cesspool is already weighing in:

GLC1969

Junior

Well at least the scoring and scrambling will improve

Oklahoma State hires Olympic and World Champion David Taylor. A 4x NCAA finalist with a career bonus rate of 91.2%.

Iowa hires Jacob Warner. A 4x AA, One-Time finalist with a career bonus rate of 28.4%.

Pretty much explains the trajectory each program is on.
Warner is a 4 AA and Runner-up. Coach Cody is a 2 AA and runner-up.

Do they not have ophthalmologists in Iowa? I hear there are treatments for myopia that have been around for a couple of centuries.

Sorry, but some of you are missing @mcpat’s point. OSU and Iowa found themselves distantly behind PSU in 2024. Each was/is reacting to that. OSU hired DT and his staff in 2024, and thus far Iowa’s only staff move has been to swap Warner for Telford. Which seems notably better? That’s it.

You would need to compare Nick Lee to Warner to have a fair comparison. Cody has head coaching experience and a wealth of worldly knowledge simply by being older and having had tons of opportunity including being an assistant on multiple record setting teams. PSU is not trying to make a splash or convince recruits that they can get better by being there. JW may end up being a great coach but by the time he can prove that Brands will be gurgling his applesauce at the shady oaks retirement home.

No one is saying Warner is a bad kid. But to compete with Penn State, one program told the legendary John Smith to step aside and the other told Bobby Telford to step aside. That’s the point.
Exactly.

It's not that Jacob Warner wasn't a very good wrestler and can't be a very good coach. It just isn't going to move the needle enough to tangibly compete with the folks Iowa should be trying to compete with.

Now, if he came on board as an assistant coach under, say, Jordan Burroughs in 2029, totally different. The entire trajectory of the program could/would change, and he would be alongside that change to complement it. As the change itself, doubt it moves the needle a whole lot. Same would have been said had Jimmy Kennedy been an assistant under Sunderland at a similar age as he was at Penn State.

Lee and Warner are an interesting comparison.

Warner was the higher rated recruit 7th intermat vs 9th intermat. Warner shirted while Lee went as a true freshman. Lee 5th his first year, Warner 7th. Lee went on to win multiple titles while Warner's best result was as a Junior. Lee was much more active in Sr. FS, making the '23 world team while Warner skipped FS throughout college and lost at last chance in '24.

This. Warner may be a perfectly cromulent coach, but the larger signal sent is "institutionally, we are not changing".

Brands doesn't want anyone outside his circle and since most of his best wrestlers (Metcalf,Ramos,Gilman,JBO,...) don't like him at all he is going to have to take someone from a lower performance level (M*,BT,JW). "We like our guys" has been his battle cry for some time and he isn't interested in moving any needles as he must understand his time is limited. I'm guessing he gets to finish this contract out and Iowa will then attempt to make a big splash with a new coach who will bring in his own staff. That is a job that will draw the best candidates.
THIS. This is how the Philadelphia Flyers went downhill. All hires were in-house/inner circle for too many years. Finally digging out.

And therein lies the problem.
Yep. You know, it's sort of funny. As a native Pennsylvanian, I have frequently noted to others that Pennsylvanians tend to exhibit a sort of unique and genetic form of hyperparochialism (eg, like the time my mentor returned to York after graduating college, told his neighbors that he was going to Penn Law School, and was greeted with 'couldn't get into Dickinson?', or the time my work colleagues in Pittsburgh really and truly thought Flight 93 was targeting the Mellon Bank tower.)

But as I think about it, we may well have met our match in Iowans.

I'm looking forward to Crosby torturing the Flyers in the playoffs again.
I despise both the penguins and the flyers and take solace in knowing the flyers suck and the penguins are going to try the same thing, without success, they have for damn near a decade at this point. Should've cut bait and moved on from some of those guys 3 + years ago. Now, they'll be substantially less able to rebuild and they're not winning jack so good. Misery loves company and James fuckign dolan will make sure I'm miserable. Forever, it seems. Well. Since I was 2 years old that is.

Silver lining, your team has a chance for McKenna! As for the Pens, Dubas is doing a solid job so far rebuilding on the fly. I certainly thought the Pens were going to finish below the Rangers at the start of the season.

I blame this on Eric lindros. In my early childhood I was a massive lindros and John Leclair fan. Leclair got old and lindros went to the rangers and I became a fan. My 11th birthday I watched lindros and the rangers molly-whopp the penguins in melon arena and was hooked on hockey ever since...

I'll say this, after the last two top 2 draft picks I'm not even concerned with where the lottery falls. I just hope they find a way to get Brady Tkatchuk and Austin matthews lol

That gave me a flashback to something I hadn't thought about in decades. Through 1977, the U.S. Tennis Open was played in Forest Hills, Queens. I knew someone who was adamant it was played in Forest Hills, the Pittsburgh suburb. They were shocked when they were finally convinced the tournament was played in a different Forest Hills, and that another Forest Hills even existed.

One more. Once I had a trip into the burgh. Hopped into an airport cab and had a nice chat with a very affable driver. Got to the topic of how we liked to read, and it went something like this:

me: what kind of books do you like to read?
Him: oh, mostly history and biography.
Me: me too. Any favorites?
Him: oh I like anything by David mccullough. (Pause). He’s from Pittsburgh ya know.
me: no I didn’t know that.
him: yeah, he wrote that Lewis and Clark book. (Editors note: I hope he was thinking of brave companions rather than undaunted courage, but if not, it makes the story even better)
Me: really an amazing journey. I’d not appreciated just how much they’d gone into the unknown.
him: you know they started right down here on the waterfront. I can take ya down there if ya want.

Pens are an interesting animal this year. All offense down the stretch. Maybe the game has changed but that usually doesn’t get you very far in late spring.

still holding out faint hope for the caps. Jr has tix for what could be ovi’s last home game tomorrow

Yeah, I often forget to ask the three questions that one should always ask before speaking/posting:

  1. Does this need to be said?
  2. Does this need to be said right now?
  3. Does this need to be said right now by me?

Unless of course, you think that your post could be nominated for the Portland Cement Crack of the Week.

From the other end of the state I had graduate classes with a woman from the Philly area who swore Arlen Spector was the Philadelphia senator and John Heinz represented the western part of the state. To make it even better, when I ask where the boundary was she insisted the western part of the state was "you know, over there by Allentown and Harrisburg to Pittsburgh.

Wish they’d call up Murashov permanently. Maybe I do not appreciate the jump up, but I think he would be a better option than Silovs behind Skinner at this point.
