Iowa wrestling exhibiting true to the bone hope and then being present to witness as that hope shatters into vile, stinging, soul wrenching bitterness is pure joy. More joyful than even watching as the Cowboys' Super Bowl hopes fade away 3 weeks after they have been eliminated.
Sports gives joy in so many diverse, pleasurable manifestations.
You also crack up the rest of us a lot more than sometimes!

I actually don't think Jacob Warner is a bad hire at all in a vacuum. He wasn't exciting but he is a very fundamentally sound (especially in riding) and guys are going to adapt to their own styles ultimately. Stephen Buchanan credited Warner a bit for his development. He's also always struck me as a very polite and likeable kid as well.
What should be concerning for Iowa fans is Warner is clearly going to be a "yes man" to Brands, which is everything they have been trying to avoid. The outside hires that was mentioned: Gwiz, Eric Thompson, Yianni, etc were guys Iowa fans were excited for because they bring new perspectives and were ready to tell Brands he needs to do things differently.
It's hard imagining Warner being someone willing to do that after he spent basically 8 years under Brands listening to him.

Jacob is a great kid. Wouldn't be surprised if he's a really solid assistant. Certainly not the splash fans wanted. but under the circumstances, i think they're crazy to expect anything different from this type of move.

Maybe I'm misremembering, but I don't think anybody confused Jimmy Kennedy with Jason Nolf on the mat. IIRC he had about 15 career pins.
No one is saying Warner is a bad kid. But to compete with Penn State, one program told the legendary John Smith to step aside and the other told Bobby Telford to step aside. That’s the point.
Warner is the perfect fit for the current Iowa program. High recruit who never really improved from his freshman year, beat up as a senior who placed worse than junior year. No freestyle accolades at all. Went from someone who tried to score to someone who tried to win 4-2 or 3-1 with limited scrambling ability.
His career 5x AA with a high of 2nd makes him the most decorated retired Brands wrestler who would be willing to coach at Iowa.

My favorite Warner story is the one @82bordeaux told about running into him at a bar.
Exactly. Iowa took someone with the ability to make an age group team and coached that out of him. His last freestyle attempt resulted in a loss to Christian Carroll at Last Chance in '24.
Brands doesn't want anyone outside his circle and since most of his best wrestlers (Metcalf,Ramos,Gilman,JBO,...) don't like him at all he is going to have to take someone from a lower performance level (M*,BT,JW). "We like our guys" has been his battle cry for some time and he isn't interested in moving any needles as he must understand his time is limited. I'm guessing he gets to finish this contract out and Iowa will then attempt to make a big splash with a new coach who will bring in his own staff. That is a job that will draw the best candidates.
