Amazing how people forget how bad BCG was. Pope isn’t half as bad. The guy played Landon slone and he wasn’t even good enough to start at pikeville college when he transferred there.

BCG got his *** whipped by Virginia Military institute at home, finished 8th in the SEC when only 3 teams made the ncaa tournament that year, treated the players awful (ran them so much on game days that their feet bled), offered scholarships to guys that made Trent Noah look like John Wall….
You know how many sec teams made it this year to the ncaa tournament??? BCG would have gotten destroyed if the league was that good back then.

One of Billy's years was an NIT year, he literally dated a players gf, he was recruiting middle school kids and dudes like Dakota Eauton and his best year, he was a 9 seed.
Don't just count losses, look at the SOS.

Pope won the most quad 1 games in the history of cbb his first year. He got a 3 seed in year 1 and BCG doesn’t have a single win that can match Pope's best 7 or 8.

That was the only reason I had tempered hopes of a continued climb back to where we all want UK basketball to be.
UK finished 9th due to tiebreakers, but the SEC Pope is coaching in, would mop the floors with the 07/08 version of the SEC. It was Florida and like Mississippi state, that was it.

I agree. But don't make it just about the SEC. Everybody is better. It's a totally different game and era. I'd take Billy G today over Pope. Ok he could sign a Patrick Patterson which imo is a all timer at UK.

BCG was so bad that the players parents had meetings with Barnhart about how bad he treated them and several was going to transfer out if he stayed for a third year. That’s not even mentioning how bad of a coach he was. Pope has got to improve but don’t let anyone convince you all that he’s even close to as bad as BCG.

We don't know what Pope is yet, he did more in 1 year here than BCG did his entire career and the competition was far greater. He might suck, but I can guarantee he doesn't suck as bad as BCG.

Using the SEC is better only takes the argument so far. They both are lower level coaches. Can find many things that are different about then and now but at the end of the day Pope is 9th in the SEC. With no recruits.
