Even UNC is missing out on Good Coaches

And exactly what has he won Doc. I've been reading on here that bigtime success is necessary to coach here so what truly notable coaching feat has he performed?
Well, it appears that Oats, Lloyd, May, Otzelberger, and Mccollum weren’t willing to leave their school for UNC. I think that is an indication of how horrible the next coaching search will be for UK. There won't be a line out the door for cream of the crop coaches wanting the job. That said, they will probably have to go after third tier guys.

Lucas is only 37, but has a lot going for him in regards to potential:
-His father was an NBA player and coach, so he has a lot of great connections
-Played under both Rick Barnes and Billy Donovan
-Was an assistant under Rick Barnes, Shaka Smart, John Calipari, and Jon Scheyer. That said, he knows what works and what doesn't work in top Power 5 schools.
-Given his position in previous programs, he is well known and experienced in recruiting
-He reached the second round of the tournament in his first season as a head coach.

UK never has to worry about getting a new coach. They can get me out of coaching retirement any time they need a coach. I won all kinds of games on the video games College Basketball 2k and ncaa march madness.

I think it does matter what the fans want. That’s why coach after coach keeps saying they don’t want to be in a fishbowl. Have you been following this stuff?
Are you mental? You expect people to believe that Barney cares what the fans want?

Makes sense that May turned them down for sure. He’s a hero at Michigan and will continue to do well there. Lloyd…..why leave Arizona for NC? McCollum is a hero at Iowa too. Contracts for coaches need to be 3 years or less in the NIL era.

I actually think seeing all this play out now COULD be a BLESSING in disguise. Hopefully, our fans see this and understand the landscape going forward. If Pope doesn’t do enough to remain the head man, fans should be more willing to take a gamble on an up and comer in the next coaching cycle. Also, no change should be made until we have our man.

Jai Lucas should be one of the first we call. Has history with Kentucky and is considered a phenomenal recruiter. Did pretty well his first season at Miami and will get an opportunity to show if he can keep it up next year, presuming CMP doesn’t live up to expectations next season.

Why would he leave Miami for Lexington? What's the upside?

It may be more similar than ever but it's nowhere near the NBA.

NBA teams dont have to possibly completely overhaul their entire team every year. College kids are all basically on 1 year contracts and can enter the portal yearly. This is nothing like free agency.

There is no salary cap in college.

Kids can quit on their team mid-season with no real penalty.

Kids dont get fined for disciplinary reason like the NBA.

Kids get recruited. Not drafted.

College coaches have to deal with parents, family, etc and can hold a coach hostage.

Other than paying players, it's not really like the NBA.

Hiring an NBA coach may work, but it won't be easy.

Exactly. It's much worse. There's a reason the league doesn't want people to jump straight to the pros from high school.

Marc Hill has John Pelphrey on speed dial, relax.

Marc is a really nice guy, but we need a Steve Spurrier type AD that will bury an opponent 70-0. If we're serious about the sports that pay the bills, we need to stop fkn around with the notion that these are "college" athletes anymore. They're mercs. Not students. They'll transfer anywhere if you look at them sideways, and contracts don't mean jack, just like they don't with the coaches they play for...

We need an ***-kicker or just drop down to NAIA OR WHATEVER

NIL means that the front of jersey doesn't mean anything. College football and men's basketball are just minor league farm systems these days.
Fair…but schools like unc, Ky, Duke and Kansas will usually have better NIL money…so why are coaches turning blue bloods down

Malone is a jerk who can’t get along with players or his admin. This is going to be fun to watch.

I can only imagine the reaction of this fan base if MB hired a guy out of the booth.

Trend remains intact as I and others have been preaching.

Former players with a special affinity for the program or TV analysts are the only people interested in taking on Blue Blood jobs with looney toon fans.

Hiring a NBA coach who won a title is an "epic failure". Hiring Mark Pope was a great success-this guy.
Some of these posters on here man. If you show them a hole in the ground and if you ask him, is that your butt or a hole in the ground? They couldn't tell the difference.

This is the perfect storm for a college team to get Donovan next year. I really don't think he stays with the Bulls and I doubt a lot of other NBA teams are interested in him as HC right now.

My guess is he takes a year off and has his pick of college jobs next year. Hopefully the stars finally align for him and UK.
If Donovan is ever gonna coach UK, it will be next season, IMO.

Bro, they missed out on their top 5 candidates and hired a guy who was UNEMPLOYED. How many good NBA coaches don’t have a job? His career winning percentage without Jokic was 33%

I mean he’s probably better than Pope and he very well could be good but trying to play this off like they hired Phil Jackson is reaching. What it goes to show is that if Pope isn’t working next year the decision needs to be made DECISIVELY AND MIDSEASON and a coach needs to be lined up the second Pope is fired. No scrambling like idiots like us two years ago or UNC this year.

Dont forget Moore and the retired mountain west coach at Michigan…

Ironically the football schools are getting the good basketball coaches.

No surprise. Nate Oates can have a couple off seasons and they won’t notice if Deboer loses two games.

Golden isn’t going anywhere either. Sumrall going to win about 9ish maybe 10 games for 3-5 years and they’ll be so flustered Golden will have built a up a harem of co-eds and started a new church and nobody will notice.

A sweet 16 year here he couldn’t even peek at a cheerleader doing a flip in Lexington without this fan base losing its mind.

I agree with having a replacement lined up. Mitch thought he had Drew in the bag. His wife said, uh, no.
