Jay Bilas shuts down John Calipari

That was a good listen. For me, it basically comes down to this: there's very little room to argue the players shouldn't have the freedom to switch schools, get paid whatever the market dictates they're worth, etc. AND YET it makes fandom worse. Bilas and Cal seemed to agree we need contracts, and the NCAA is so scared of that they're willing to torpedo the game to avoid it.

It hasn't really hurt TV viewership and that often gets pointed to as a counterargument. Frankly I think fans are sort of hostages in this, at the risk of sounding dramatic. I was born into college basketball fandom, it would take a lot to get me to give it up entirely. I could go on about that for longer but in short I think demand is a little less elastic than it's made out to be.

I'd never heard the football history Bilas shared. I don't doubt him (although he stuttered through it enough to make me question how well he knew the facts), but I do think there's something to the conventional wisdom that the NFL doesn't want to start drafting 19 year olds because they're physically not ready to play against pros. I say that to say I don't think his dismissal of Cal's point was fair.

I saw that live and watched it here again. I missed where Bias said anything of note both times.

To me what Bilas was saying was of note because it was well-reasoned, methodical, composed truth being contemporaneously put up beside a weak false narrative in real time. Bilas shut Calipari up not by being rude or talking over him – he wasn’t and he didn’t – he shut Calipari up because what he was saying made what Calipari was saying look exactly like what it was - scripted bs meant to further an agenda rather than be an honest assessment. It was exposing Calipari for being what he said he didn’t want to be – TRANSACTIONAL.

I see it differently. If you think the dookie is doing anything other than self promotion then you are entitled to that opinion. he in no way shut Cal up.

Cal is always on. I agree. Any recruit watching that had to say, I want to play for that guy.

This is called a conversation. I know this generation isn't familiar with these, but they used to happen all the time before social media and hot take shows.
Dead. On. Ballz. Accurate.

It's amazing how binary people have become. People always thinking it has to be one way or the other. There's a whole lot of ways to accomplish things and get places. Typically dialogue (what you see here) is a great way to start getting there.

Anyone who thinks that student-athletes should just be able to switch schools when they want, is severely lacking in common sense. In the non-student-athlete world, students don't transfer nearly as often as the athletes do. Why? Because they're there to get educated. The athletes are doing this to get paid, and that college education is about getting paid AFTER you get educated. Full stop.

Of course there must be limits, otherwise why can't Michigan offer Mullens $2 million to transfer before the game tonight? And what about the 4 year rule, that's clearly "artificially" limiting earning potential for players.

Sports are strengthened by competitive balance and roster continuity, there should be nothing wrong with the NCAA instituting rules to enforce those things.

If they aren’t careful players are liable to start transferring during the season and try to play right away. I know of a high school basketball player that transferred after the first game to a district rival. He didn’t get to play until the last two weeks of the regular season. There was a high school football player that transferred after a couple of games and played right away. It’s just a matter of time before a college player tries it.

Right. It's now.. "He got owned." "She cooked with this one." "You can't come back from this!" "Demolished!"

They even gave each other a pound at some point during the exchange. Cuz they're adults.

Thought they had a pretty good relationship, but Jay put Calipari in his place a couple times for spewing his used car salesman take.

Cal still livin rent free in BBN domes. You worry about Cal more than you do your savior Pope. Kinda funny

Bilas is well-read and studied on the subject. Seth and Cal come across as cognitively stiff. That fist-bump Cal offered was his white flag. "Please back off and don't embarrass me."

Also, the old heads are putting too much value on a college degree.

Cal: "winning a title is extremely hard, if you have a new team every year, it's doubly hard"

Then why were you running the UK program like a turnstile?

Bilas is a "know it all" that tries to sound like all of his ducks are in a row. He is a blooming Moran for not understanding what Seth & Cal are saying

Having been an engineer, manager, and CEO of two regional companies i had plenty of experience dealing with HR Law, legal actions, and big dollars. I think this chaos started with the courts and will end in the courts. The President signed an EO but i don’t believe the US Congress will pass anything given higher priorities. Personally, i think the NCAA model of classifying these athletes as contractors in The House vs NCAA will be challenged in court for multiple reasons. The chaos is a red flashing light saying sue me !!!! Who knows where it ends.

So you're not good enough to play pro ball. Please explain to me CCC exactly what's wrong making $75k per year. No school loan debt. Banked some NIL money and you're in your mid 20s. They're better off than 99% of young people in their mid 20s.
