Garrison didn’t improve at all under Pope.

He will improve under a new coach.
Absolutely he will. None of the bigs have been taught the skills to play around the rim. I don’t understand how people put all the blame on the players. You do drills in practice to gain the skill and muscle memory to instinctively react in a game. That’s called coaching.

If we can’t do better than Brandon Garrison then I don’t know what to say .

The man averaged 4 points and 4 Rebs . Are we being serious right now
Think of the upside...maybe 4.1 points and 4.2 rebounds with more PT??

If Pope returns Moreno, Chandler and Kam Williams, I think that’s more than enough retention. Everyone else can be a case-by-case judgment call. Recent champions usually have had about 3-4 returnees as heavy rotation guys with a mix of newcomers (mostly transfers).
If you only have 3 returners and no impact freshman then the team will not be a contender.

If you have 3 returnees, let’s say:

PG -
SG - Chandler
SF -
PF -
C - Moreno
6th - Williams

^ You’re saying you’d have to have an impact freshman. I’d say that is untrue. Since most of us are unfamiliar with with most of the portal guys from this year, I’ll replace those three spots with Michigan’s portal guys from last year.

PG - Cadeau
SG - Chandler
SF - Lendeborg
PF - Johnson
C - Moreno
6th - Williams

^ This theoretical roster was built using only portal guys from a national contender this season. If you don’t think that would be a contender, I don’t know what to tell you.

No, I don’t think you NEED a freshman.

(For those who are going to misunderstand, no, I don’t think Yaxel’s grow on trees and no, I’m not saying I know for a fact Pope would land this type of portal haul. The point is that you can supplement your returnees with excellent portal transfers and be a contender.)

Every single thing about his shot is wrong and using the glass hasn't yet occurred to him. He shouldn't have been here this past season.
True. Watch the skill set of the.big men in the final 4 and then watch ours......it's depressing how undeveloped our players are.

No, I do not think he is a Shaq. I think he has some potential with the right coach. Already, the so called experts are saying he will be one of the most coveted big men in the portal.
I’m waiting to see what powerhouse is going to be knocking down the door for BG. And I doubt he will be a starter anywhere he goes, he couldn’t start over a freshman this year.

Retention is one of the most important part of roster construction. Pope is failing with this team.
Continuity/ Roster retention is a double edged sword I'd argue that you don't want much continuity on a team as dysfunctional as last year.
Can't have continuity on a bad team and expect that continuity to be a great team just because they have another shot at it.
Individual players can grow but the general basis of the team was a extremely offensively challenged on offense and pretty bad on defense as well can't return that and just expect it to get better.

I know several people are happy BG is gone. However, I am not sure we will do better in the portal. Sometimes a fix requires hard work and improving what we have.
Could you do worse than BG? Sure. Are you winning a national championship relying on a significant contribution from BG? No. So I’ll roll the dice with somebody new.

That is true. However, are we winning a national championship with Pope? A more realistic question is, Are we winning a conference Championship with Pope?

I thought it was a huge .mistake LAST year by Pope to keep him. To risk THE critical year of his coaching career on him would ne insane. I don't think lack of ability was this kids problem, his main problem always seemed to be between his ears.

Retention is huge for sure. Also, going in the portal doesn't mean they're gone....yet, although I think he will be.

Pope screwed up this off season by massively overpaying last off-season. Going to be tough to retain bg at his market rate when you probably paid him double or triple last year.

Its going to be the same with mo. Both these guys are key reserves but we will have little chance of keeping them because Pope made it rain last season.

I'm not sure the entirety of the problem with BG was BG. The more I see of what other programs are doing, the more I think that this staff isn't getting the best from our players and keeping them motivated. The TED talk word salad approach doesn't work. Pope isn't Phil Jackson.

On a related note, Cal wasn't developing players either before he left here. For example, I saw how much Onyenso improved for Bennett at UVA. It's a night and day difference, after he spent time in a system and got some coaching. Cal's approach wasn't working here either during the "lazy Cal" phase of his tenure.

If Pope can’t get a guy better than BG, then he’s getting fired next year. BG averaged 4.7 points and 4.1 rebounds, you’re acting like he’s Shaq.
This is true. People in that circle say it can happen in early stages of season if there aren’t drastic changes.

center position is a massive weak spot for this team. just look at the centers in the final four

michigan/mara - 12ppg 7rpg (shared time with johnson 13ppg 7rpg)
arizona/krivas - 10ppg 8rpg (shared time with awaka 9ppg / 9 rpg)
illinois/tomislav - 10ppg 5rpg
uconn/reed - 15ppg 9rpg (freshman backup reibie 6ppg and 3rpg)

our centers:
moreno - 7ppg 6rpg
garrison - 5ppg 4rpg

i get the grass isnt always greener, but running it back with both moreno and garrison prevents you from winning at a high level. we need more out of that position. we are getting effectively half the output at that spot compared the teams in the final four. hard to win that way.
