I guess you’re also ok with the UK president and AD doing anything they want without question?

I don’t recall anyone else going to bat and challenging them.

His insight on what happens in the locker rooms and recruiting trail wouldn’t be available. Between the inside scoops and calling UK ppl out for poor decisions is valuable.
None of this is relevant to my ability to "stay connected" to Kentucky basketball. Honestly, it just isn't.

I'm not replying to any of the above, because it isn't relevant. Straw men don't work on me. Enjoy the ignore pile.

I don’t understand the MJ hate. I listen every day bc my job is very boring and I love having some uk content to listen to. I don’t mind most of the other banter, aside from Ryan but just bc he’s extremely cringey and his attempts to insert humor are almost unbearable at times.

Matt is a closet Duke fan and won’t be missed. I’ve not heard the man speak in YEARS, on purpose and I’m more informed than 99% of our fans. I also moved out of state.

I’m not sure what info Matt produces that’s not available in 15 other places?? And the internet is the internet and the same amount of information is available no matter if you live in Lexington or Honol
The "duke fan" stuff is so dumb. No one roots for where they go to professional school. Athletics has absolutely no ties to professional school. Maybe minimal ties to grad school but no one likes graduate students haha.
For being so "informed" have you considered that a lot of people listen to his show for things other than sports? UK athletics is the primary focus but a secondary aspect is the on-goings in the state. A lot of people like hearing what's going on, how they can help in tragedy, and feeling connected to KY. You don't get that going to 15 other places. This is our state's basketball team not some team everyone picks because they're the best. If it was another state/sport none of us would care. There's a feeling of community on the show that people tune in for whether they're down the road, in another state, or overseas. You dont get that the scouring the internet for information. Most people have things to do and dont have time or any desire for that.

Even though he may get on my nerves at times, I would absolutely hate if he left KSR. It would basically be a death blow to the show. As great as Shannon, Drew and Ryan are, they aren’t the level of host that Matt is. Show quality takes a noticeable dip anytime Matt is gone. Matt brings the energy which is key in making KSR what it is.

KSR is the sole reason I started listening to podcasts over a decade ago. I’ve listened to a handful of podcasts off and on during that time but there’s only been one that I’ve consistently listened to that entire time period and that’s KSR. I’m afraid my podcast listening days would be over if he left.

No doubt Pope and University admin wants Matt off Kentucky sports radio. Seems they may get their wish. Although I think Matt shouldn't have caved to the university on the hiring of pope. He could've stopped it like the stoops to A&M 🏈 and that really worked out well for them. Although A&M apparently had competent people leading the university,I don't think that's the case for Kentucky.

I hope Pope turns it around this year but red flags are everywhere that he won't. In the end that's not on Pope but Barnhardt for putting Pope in that position.

I enjoy the show when Matt is on there leading the content. Otherwise the show is just tough to listen to. I don't agree with his political views most of the time but he does love the Cats. Kudos to him calling out Mitch, Eli, Stoops, Cal, etc.
There is going to be a lot of guests hosts this summer while Matt goes on another 2 month European vacation, including the Sklar brothers.

He said he would still host the show. Might move to a different time though.
I hope so. Love him or hate him KSR can be a fun romp and it was absolutely a pioneer model for other shows.
Sure Matt can't do it forever, but they're gonna have a hard time finding 4 dudes that have as much fun, and love UK like they do.

It depends on how much longer the contract KSR radio has with IHeart Radio.

This MB is interesting. I’ve seen people here say plenty of times “I can’t believe they have a bunch of Duke homers on ESPN it’s not fair blah blah blah”. And now a UK guy gets an ESPN radio show and it’s “Yawn who cares!!” Like what? The On3 board is awful. Is the premium board any better I can’t believe how horrible the new RR is.
Let's be honest....if he was of another political persuasion he'd be vaunted up on a pedestal .

MJ went to Duke
Yes, he did....for law school. Because it's one of the best law schools in the world. He was born and raised a Kentuckian.
That's like blaming a doctor for going to Harvard or an engineering for going to MIT. Or Reed Sheppard for going to the NBA.

If you get the chance to attend a top school in your field. You go.

No hate for MJ. I respect he is a hustler and provides services others appreciate.

That said, he at ESPN would be another show I won’t listen to.

Because the signs are there, look at the recruiting, the same issues, with poor effort and slow starts, blowout losses, as in year 1. Pope has been coaching for 15 years. This is who he is. He's a 50+ year old coach, who's coached in Utah mainly. With 0 NBA or AAU connections. He's a question mark to most high schoolers. And a dork/weirdo at worst. We're just kicking the can down the road.
I don't disagree. But we'd be absolutely lambasted in the media and I'm not sure It would bode well for finding another coach of value.

I ask, "Who do we go get" that would come right now with UNC open? Thankfully Self decided to go one one more year (and the UNC job opening may have contributed).

It's a bad time to go coach shopping. I hate it, but we're stuck with him a bit longer.

He wanted to do some fan interest radio shows but was turned down initially which made him start KSR. He said had he been allowed to do some of the radio shows he wanted to do in the beginning that he would have continued to be a lawyer full time.

For me it’s weird.

I’m not the biggest Jones fan because he can be extremely arrogant and talking down to anyone who disagrees with him is oft putting.

That said, the show is harder to listen to when he’s not there. Matt keeps the show moving. Shannon is a pretty good host. Drew is best as a side guy and Ryan seems like a good dude but man he’s cringey. I also hope acting like Matt’s personal yes man is a schtick and not real.

Nothing lasts forever and KSR radio show will die when Matt leaves. You may see Drew and Ryan in podcast form in the future when that happens.

When UK played A&M, we had dinner at a food truck with a couple who met at A&M in grad school. Both sports fans. She from UF and he from Pitt. Both said their former fan bases were the worst. Both fell in love at and with A&M and were HUGE Aggie fans.

Agree. Say what you want about Matt one way or another, but the show is brutal to listen to when he’s away. The others are just sidekicks, not lead men.

It’s clear they do very little prep whether Matt is there or not. Like him or not Matt does do prep and honestly the others do little more than chime in.

KSR 1st hour can help pass the time for me when I’m doing my 3-4 mile walk. Rarely make it two the 2nd hour podcast. So I hope someone will fill the void when the time comes.

Just amazes me the lengths some will go to hate on him. And I am no MJ fanboy. He's always had things that get on my nerves, and I hate his politics. But the things people say don't even make sense. You know you don't actually believe he is a Duke fan, so why do you say it? Because he went there? My cousin was a huge U of L fan and he went to UK. Also, what would he get out of devoting his life to a school he secrety hates?

IMO it is mostly his political opinions and for some it is jealousy. He is extremely successful doing what he wants to do. I do not share his political beliefs, and I would often disagree with him on a lot of things, when I used to listen. But I don't let that cloud my opinion of his success. It appears he is a millionaire, many times over, and has helped his friends become wealthy too through his wrestling and his restaurant endeavors.

The guy was heavily courted to be a Senate candidate if you take him at his word. He's worked for CBS, and ESPN, and owns or owned several businesses. Have no idea if he is gay, I doubt it, but who cares anyway. Again, I get it if you don't like the guy. But people claiming he's a Duke fan, doesn't contribute anything to UK community, etc, is just dumb, and smells like jealousy.

You’re not a fan of his but you’re on here writing books to people who don’t like him… 😂

I seriously think he is a Duke fan, Duke is a top law school in the country but not the best, so why go there? Why not another top school, why specifically Duke?

When our fans are uneducated and blindly follow, of course he will devote his life to covering a team to become a millionaire. Who wouldn’t???? 😂

Cool.

And I’m dead serious, I’m not saying that he doesn’t pull for Kentucky to win but he also likes to see Duke win. I’m old enough to remember the early days of Matt Jones.. 😂

I wouldn’t mind if a Nuke hit Louisville but if I can become a millionaire covering their sports, I’m hopping on a plane this morning.

The early days of Matt jones when he posted as Magloire52 on the old cats pause message board regularly?
