Good luck wherever you go Jasper. One thing the kids got to do is work on getting stronger in the weight room and breaking bad habits he formed playing aau ball.

Why do you want a point guard that never passes the ball ?
Except that he’s really NOT a point guard. At. All. He’s a pure wing that never should be running point.

That’s one thing I’ll say in Jasper’s defense. He probably would have looked a bit better this year if he hadn’t been forced to play out of position for much of the season. Blame for that falls on Pope for failing to recruit a backup point.

It’s more like until the bottom falls out in the place becomes dysfunctional. I mean pope failed to define a role for this kid. A player of this kids magnitude you you put in in November December you coached the hell out of them starting in October but games in November and December when you’re playing popcorn state you’re getting this kid 25 30 Minutes and your coaching them game the game, looking at tape showing him what you expect out of him to continue the 20 25 min a game.

None of that happened not even close. This is the problem. This is why Pope is going to have a hard time recruiting freshman. He cannot develop them. He may be able to coach some older guys grad. Transfers may be able to get away with putting a team together like that and at some point Land one guy like a Lindenberg from Michigan and get lucky for a season. And you can have decent teams doing that, but you will never win a championship.. you can build a program and get some of these guys your first season. you know when you bring them in as transfers. Or bring them in as freshman. But you’ve gotta bring them in your first year freshman and sophomore. You’ve got to take some lumps and you have to build around those guys that’s called building a program. We don’t have anything close to that.

Chandler is the only guy from Pope’s first season that will contribute this year. If we had 5-6 Chandler types. Well, we will be having a great season next year. We have nobody to build around. Chandler’s likely gonna leave.. so it’s gonna be another year of transfers and if he can Land Stokes and some stroke of luck, it’s gonna come down to transfers I’m mean you’ve got Trent noah hanging around waiting to see if things shake out to where he’s gonna get Minutes. Because if we don’t bring in a ton of players, looking at big Minutes. Williams too, but Williams is a good bench level potential six man. Garrison, he’s gonna hang out. Hang around wait and see if something shakes out to where he’s the starter? Diabate the same?
Yeah i seriously doubt Popes ability to coach up guys, not because he didn’t know what to tell them, but because he seems to lack the demeanor to coach them hard and demand certain things from them. Just too nice and thinks he can root them to it instead of forging it in them.

Not until he gets way stronger if you look at the SG from that class only Mullins has been worth anything
Trey McKinney is a beast, Braydon Burries. I guess they could be considered wings, but they are kinda interchangeable in some offenses now. They are the size and ability of the guys we need to be recruiting.

Wish him well, but he isn't ready for Kentucky basketball. Part of that is the Overtime Elite prep ... I hope we never get a player from there again. It is all AAU ball.

Jasper was a ball hog and he couldn't guard his own shadow. He might light it up at a lesser school next year, but he wouldn't have been a contributer here until he was at least a junior.

I’m not sure it’s correct to say Johnson was overrated by recruiting services. Those services mainly rate players based on future NBA potential – especially at the top of the rankings – rather than expected production as a college freshman. In Johnson’s case he is a long 6’5” with good perimeter shooter and scoring potential. So, maybe that’s the ranking basis. And maybe, as others have said, if his body and game mature and develop he can be a really productive college player and a pro. But I feel like that’ll take patience and UK is probably not the best place for that. Just my opinion.

I can't believe you even typed that Johnson is 6'5. Crazy.

He was put in a bit of a tough spot never getting to play next to a PG, but overall he just showed very little against good competition. He has 3 more years though.

Johnson averaged over 6 assists per game as a PG in high school. The only time he didn't play PG exclusively was his junior year at Link Academy when he played with Lebaron Philon and Tre Johnson.

Somehow as a recruit he was listed at 6’5, 6’4 during college but as someone who has met him and spoke with him he measures in at maybe 6’2 without shoes and 6’3 with shoes if I were to bet.

Kid has one of the weakest mental games I’ve seen for a high level recruit. His mentality toward basketball will be the reason he never has success at a high major college level and why he never taps his potential. I hope for his sake he matures and gets that side under control be in because if he doesn’t he doesn’t stand a chance.

That was my thing with the Uncle diatribe. What do you want Pope to do? The kid was unplayable. Offenses literally targeted him the minute he got on the court and his offense was nothing but ISO and hero ball that usually ended in tragedy.

Love that he gave it a shot and wish he would stick it out here, but that's not our offense. Hell, it wouldn't surprise me if he went to Arkansas. Cal'll let him do whatever the **** he wants on offense and we all know that not playing defense isn't a deal breaker with him. 😂
Yeah, I have no idea what game that uncle was watching, but if he thinks Jasper should have been playing more, he knows nothing about basketball.

NBA potential? I guess he'll be spending 4 years in college then.

I agree because he wasn't recruited to play pg and he had to step in because our coach didn't have a backup pg on our roster which is just incompetent.

The kid is a 2 guard . No doubt he has a lot of work ahead both physically and mentally if he really wants to play at the next level. He deserves some of the blame for sure but its not all on him for a poor freshman year.

This is Mark PROGRESS : cannot recruit high talent and cannot develop players like JJ.

He also cannot evaluate talent and doesn t recognize that a player lik3 JJ should have been kept, defined his role, put him on strehnghtining program.

Dissapointing.

Jasper has a ton of skills. Some of the best on the team. He also is simply physically light and weak. He does not get to take advantage of his skills because more mature players put him where they want him. He was also disadvantaged by playing out of position. He may develop into a serviceable PG, but he was not close this year. His basketball IQ was also lacking.

It will be interesting to see who makes the hardest pitches to JJ. He will be a Div 1 backcourt star if he develops his body, works on his handle, and learns the college game (defense). I just would not bet that is next season. If he stayed at UK, he likely comes off the bench fighting for minutes. To get more floor time, I think he needs to step down.

3 years at a minimum would be my guess, and he may never make it. But others apparently saw the "potential" for him to play in the NBA. Not real easy to see ahead to that at the present, but he could and I hope he does.

What skill does he have exactly? He can’t dribble, is a horrible passer with bad vision, he’s weak and not athletic. He can’t dribble. He can shoot an open 3 and has 1 step back move. Of course he can improve but he is not a skilled player right now.
