Erod is gone.
Erod is gone.
I would certainly think so, which leaves another player we need. I would think Jan can land some decent players, but the numbers are stacking up with these defections, and then so many new faces to meld into a group playing together. She has her work cut out for her. No more going several years with the same 4-5 girls starting together.....

While there's clearly no guarantee there will as usual be hundreds of players transferring in and out. Chit Chat came out of nowhere. We're replacing Hannah and Feurbach in the starting lineup. Assuming that Hannah's position will be filled by a 5 star player Wolizco and Houston. Hannah was a tremendous 4 year player for us. Wolizco shows a little more skill offensively but obviously the B1G is a different beast physically. Journey had a tremendous year and will only get better. While others think no, I think Journey hopefully continues to get more versatile and can even possibly play a little bit of the 3, and would be a tough matchup if she could use her strength inside. At this point Feurbach's minutes, defense and experience will be the toughest to replace, now that Deal has left and Levin has left. But I also don't think Levin was capable of playing big minutes for a contender. We have money and yes, you can't tell me we can't find someone who wants to play for a top 15 team who is capable of shooting 35% from the 3 and scoring 12-15 pts a game. After this we will just need depth. So honestly yes, I do think we can and will go out and get better players. In the past you had to depend on Freshman but now you can find experienced very good players who are able to step in and play and help immediately.
And there will 1000's of players. Still many of those are like Levin and Deal who are leaving because they weren't playing enough, if at all. Its through that that you have to cull the "better players".....

Get off your high horse. I obviously read your intiial post and responded (as did several others) before reading the post you made later. It happens. As I stated later if Deal was getting paid that and the pressure from her parents and agent, its no wonder at all why she crumbled later in the year, (specifically after her return to Cali), playing back home. That seems to be the launching point for when she really started struggling, and it makes some sense knowing more of this now. I feel bad for her. Sure she got paid, but did all this drama put a wrench in her growth going forward. Too bad all the way around.
Well generally when I read something that completely refutes my point I delete it.

As to Deal here is my opinion on this. I think she has put a lot of work - however I do think her parents/handlers also crafted the best situation for her. Holding her back at least 1 year possibly 2 so in High School to play against younger competition (she is 1 1/2 to 2 years older than college the normal Freshman that came into school). Now I was not a fan of the attacks going against her back in fall. But the overall picture is beginning to look as if she peaked early and she wasn't as elite as it appeared. The other is, I think her body is fighting her hard. I think it naturally wants to put weight on. She won't be the first she won't be the last, but for someone that was already limited quickness wise, the additional weight compounded the issue. She crumbled due the lack of athleticism/quickness and that her skills were good enough to be the floor general like Caitlin. Chit Chat was brought in to be the back up starting guard and she played really well and took the starting position - and doesn't appear that she will relinquish it.

In my opinion, Deal would have been better had she stayed at Iowa. From some of the Interviews/Articles it sounds like that's what she wants. However her handler/agents/parents want her to go somewhere else for more opportunity and money. Its also been stated Jan is okay letting this headache walk away.

Record is all that matters. No one will bring up they lost by 50 in the championship. It won't be used as a negative period. Last year they got farther than they were supposed. Both teams outperformed their expectations to start the season.

I highly doubt next year is going to determine Jan's future. You just really enjoy throwing 💩.

You know by your standards Bluder would have been fired multiple times over.
Several, several fallacies with your argument comparing Bluder to JJ.
1. Bluder was a HC before she arrived in IC. She was a proven commodity.
2. Iowa was not a high profile program other than the brief time of Stringer. Expectations are higher now.
3. NIL has put more pressure to win when you spend big.
4. Bluder had JJ. We don't know who JJ trusts?

You haven't made a convincing argument that JJ is safe with continued poor post season performances.
Sorry.😉

I'm just interjecting some thoughts based on the last couple of years. Even when Clark was here we couldn't land Betts or several other players of color because of some issues with the fans or whatever you want to believe. We had several top players who wouldn't even talk to the NIL guru. We went after countless top 50 players in this upcoming class (many top 15 players) and landed a grand total of one of those. (Really an issue when you consider we were losing 4-5 players). Honestly our track record of landing "better" players the last three years is not good at all, and Jan may get to a ;point where she can't be as picky as she'd like because you can't have just 8-9 players. Its great to be optimistic, and I truly hope things go well, but Jans got herself a major issue right now of not only landing from 5-7 players minimum, (maybe more, just to practice effectively), but also to meld all those new players into one cohesive unit.
Jan is on record saying she should have been able to read the tea leaves better and not hang on to the top recruits stringing her along and take some of those in the 30-100 range. IE already having a commit for next year in the fold. There are other schools recruiting, it is tough trying to stay at the top of the mountain. I use to really respect your takes, the last week not so much.

Jan has gotten 2 recruits that are ranked in the highest levels Iowa womens basketball has ever gotten in Deal and MW - add in Hays and Journey. Her quality has been better. Let alone in a different era where transfers are occurring. We should have taken a massive drop after losing Caitlin, we didn't - Lucy really pulled us through the season, and this year we really outperformed. We are short on the guard side but that can change.

I am not sure Bourrage is someone Jan is interested in - it would be interesting if we were to swap out Deal for her if that some how came to fruition. I will wait to see what happens in the portal. My guess is we will be pleasantly surprised.

You again are showing your idiocy -

I could argue we had a similar brief time at the top with Stringer as Bluder did at Iowa.

I don't have to prove a double negative. You have to prove she will be on the hot seat, so far you have nothing to prove it. I won't say it can't happen, things move fast in college athletics, but again you are flinging poo. You are stating because we had 2 elite years with Bluder at the end of her coaching career, that Jan deserves to be held to much more higher/difficult standard that Bluder couldn't have even met? You can state Jan didn't have a head coaching position prior, but she appears to be doing well without that experience. Top 10 team #2 seed ranked 6th. Its tough being near the top when that season isn't even good enough for someone like you.

Do you also not think agents are reaching out to programs to gage interest? Sure, Jan will have to get the new players to come together. But it happens all the time now. And we have 3 returning starters! We have landed back to back really good pt guards the last 2 years. And we have money and agents know this. We will get plenty of calls from good players.

Actually Deal committed to Lisa....Jan was able to keep her but she was already committed to Iowa when Jan took the job

An 18 year old kid got paid a million dollars to play basketball. I hope it weighed heavy on her, it should. If you take the money, take everything else that comes with it.

My problem isn’t about money or expectation, It’s more in line with likely for the first time in her basketball career she faced real adversity and instead of looking in the mirror and saying what do I need to do to get better she decided to bail. There are going to be times in life you are going to face adversity and bailing isn’t going to be an option.

It’s Iowa. 2nd place in the league is better than we’ve done in men’s basketball in 50 years. And Fran lasted 15 years with 4 wins in the tournament. Unless Jan cheats or does something else illegal or embarrassing to the University she’s not going anywhere. You don’t fire coaches at a school like Iowa coming in 2nd place and going 27-7. You’re just talking out of your ***.

I really don't see how we disagree much on these points, I'm just not overly optimistic given the sheer number of players she has to replace. Deal was recruited during Lisa's tenure. Jan had to convince her nothing was going to change. I think that right there is where the Deals got a "false sense" of the future. What they saw previously was because Clark was running the show. Jan rightly knew that we didn't have someone to run the offense at breakneck speed and knew we'd have to be better on defense. I think that's where part of the disconnect was.

Its not easy but Men's basketball has shown it can be done - effectively replace your entire rotation. As to the Team what are they replacing - Kylie, Hannah and 10 minutes of Deal. I am sure they can do that and find 2-3 players to hold up the bench until we get a really large class for 2027.

Some of this is simply arguing so you can argue. I NEVER said that She or MOSTLY her family were not to blame. I said that probably explains why she struggled. That makes sense to me. As I stated, yes she got the money, so no ones feeling sorry for her, but it probably led to what we saw, and its not all on the player who was 20 years old. I don't think she wanted to play badly, nor do I think she lacks talent. I think she crumbled to a degree under the pressure.

Not the same thing at all and I think you know that. Ben was effective because he basically brought his entire team and his incoming recruits with him from his previous job. He hit the ground running with his current system in place. Now it bit him in the rear a couple of games because much of the roster wasn't B1G quality, but he pushed through and over achieved because they played within his system, AND he had a star point guard. Jan's team had some major deficiencies this season being able to score from the perimeter. If she can address that in a big way, it should look a lot better. If not, we'll see.

Huh???

He brought in 5 players from his team from the previous year . . . . let me state that again 5 players. Stirtz, Manauya, Combs, Howard, Banks.

Tate Sage was the only Freshman that came in and did anything. He got Folguiras to commit from Robert Morris, He got Brendan Hausen from K-State (the only player with high Division 1 experience). He then got Cooper Koch and walkon Jacob Koch to stay. They then did good enough to get in the tournament and go on a run. They have less experience players than Iowa WBB has right now, and in the portal my guess is Jan will find will find players with much more pedigree than Foguiras and Hausen.

Ben was affective because Stirtz came with him. Then he filled in the holes. This is what Mens and Womens basketball is morphing into. You are almost having an entire new team each year with only a few holdovers - In Ben's case 5 players who knew his system. You have to find those 1 to 2 elite players to lead your team. Jan has 1 in Ava and a very good #2 in Chit Chat. We have depth pieces, what else can Jan find. We will likely run with a smaller roster or pick up several Senior transfers for depth. I am currently anticipating a 4-5 commit class this fall.

I guess Beth will have to decide if running a clean program and being competitive is a higher priority than competing for championships!

And your last sentence is not what I stated.
No one is getting fired after two years and I didn't suggest that.

Huh, is right. So you named the players besides Howard who played the majority of all the minutes. Hausen basically DNP the ENTIRE season. The only hold over, Koch was the other starter. Sage was his recruit from Drake. Obviously Stirtz was the main piece, but bringing in the guys that played with him was also a big part of their ability to run Bens scheme. Maybe it wasn't his "entire team", but it was the guys who played most of the time and ran what he wanted.

Hiring an established coach after Bluder retired might have been a good idea?

If the rumors are indeed true, JJ's leash for next season might be pretty short.

Maybe the real issue is Iowa's assts aren't very good???
Perhaps JJ just refuses to accept input or doesn't trust their opinions??

Losing Raina Harmon was a big loss.
Whatever is going on, expecting Ava to mask the deficiencies is asking a lot.

How you finish is what gets carried into the off season.
The mental state of the program has to be a huge concern for the entire team...and fans.
There's a lot to try and fix.
Hopefully, JJ has some kind of plan. Any plan.

This thread gets more depressing by the hour.
Can Beth talk Bluder out of retirement?

I mean, it's not Iowa State level depressing, but coming off a 27 win season, it just feels like things are spiraling downward.

This what? The guys that played the majority of the minutes other then when Folgeras wasn't in the dog house were his Drake guys and Sage who was his recruit to Drake. I don't see what your disputing what I said. Ben had a leg up keeping his system intact by having so many players who ran his system play around his star who they were all used to playing with. Hausen, who was supposed to be a big addition bearly got out of his warm ups the entire season.

Lets just look at the Nebraska game. You implied Iowa did well because they brought the entire Drake team over. What I listed as fact was they only brought 5 players over. In the Nebraska game the Drake players that transferred over that had previous experience was 105 minutes. The other 95 minutes was filled by Koch, Sage and Folgueras. We don't need to move the goal posts. The whole point was that you can get a variety of players some with experience in your system and some with out and try to get them to mesh into a decent team. Your implication was it was effectively a full roster that came over and those facts just don't bear out when you look at the whole picture.

Again 5 players transferred from Drake, thats it, end of story. 5 players that had previous experience playing for McCollum.

So now you admit you said it? What the F is wrong with you . . .

I never said that . . . .

Well I did say that in retrospect . . . . but next season . . . forget everything else I said like bringing Bluder out of retirement. That has no bearing on this discussion.

This 100%. The assumption that we're just going to go out and bring in better players then those we lost is befuddling. Maybe we will, but its not a given. Hell , I hated seeing Levin leave. I thought she'd be a solid backup the next two seasons
There are no sure things, but my hope is that, aside from Hannah, the best pieces of this year's team are all returning.. In terms of guards, there is absolutely no reason why Iowa can't use the portal to acquire more production than KF, Emrod, Levine, and Addie delivered this year.

So now you admit you said it? What the F is wrong with you . . .

I never said that . . . .

Well I did say that in retrospect . . . . but next season . . . forget everything else I said like bringing Bluder out of retirement. That has no bearing on this discussion.
Bluder should be hired as Jan's lead asst.

That might help.

And after your posts regarding what Iowa spends on WBB...JennieB and Chavez were definitely affordable.
