We need a team full of guys who are all 6'8 (or taller)

I was not thrilled when we picked up Jaland Lowe for this reason. The evidence has been clear for a while and I'm confused why Mark Pope couldn't see this or chose not to follow this. We need a roster full of tall long players with skill.

A common saying on this board back in the Tubby days was, "You can't teach 7 feet." At one point we had three 7 footers on the roster and still didn't win a title.

Agree.

One thing Cal got right is size and length.

You can have a smaller guard, even a couple, if you have the perimeter and post talent. Generally speaking though if the shots aren’t falling and you don’t have the reliability/talent down low then a smaller guard cannot overcome that.

Pope needs some Harrison twins. They obviously had the talent/size all around them as well but I think they would have managed fine if other areas lacked.

Not really worried about the star ratings or pro potential. Pope needs size and length that can play his style.

I like pg’s in the 6’-6’2” range with length around them. They generally handle the ball better and are quicker. There are exceptions. I also prefer when they challenge the opponent point guard’s dribbling when they cross half court, ala Ullis. It keeps them looking down at the pest guarding them and disrupts their offense, it’s the reason Tyler won SEC DPOY.

It’s funny, for several recent years people on this board were insisting we needed to go more small ball because all these Villanova-style small ball lineups kept dominating the final four every year.

But this year the mood has switched the opposite direction with posters now insisting we need a team full of giants. Y’all just can’t make up your minds.

Athletic enough and skilled. Arizona can attack you from every position with the dribble and they can all pass off that. You have to get the defense moving and take advantage of the fact there are almost no charges now.
Their guards are elite and defend that’s why they beat Purdue. Burries was all over Fletcher hounding him and holding him to 8 points what you

What you need is talent at each position and something half way decent coming off the bench . Arizona has that elite guards SF PF

Saying they “didn’t win a title” is vast understatement. That was a miserable 13 loss team that just barely made the tournament as nearly the last bubble team to get in.

And it was really more like FOUR seven footers. We had 6‘11“ Randolph Morris, 7‘3” Shagari Alleyne, , 7’2” Jared Carter and 7’1” Lukas Obruzt all at the same time. That was probably the tallest roster in CBB history. And,boy, did they ever suck.

I've never liked small guards.

Yup 21 feet of nothing
Need the Aircraft Carrier in the middle. Probably 2 of them.
I am really impressed with the bigs from Purdue and AZ.
That's the kind of men we need scoring, rebounding and protecting the rim.
Moreno might get there at some point but it will be after he's long gone from UK IMO. He's a kid. He's never gonna be a true big in my book. He's more like a 4 to me. Problem is he doesn't have the skills to be a 4.

Agreed. You gotta get athletes as your bigs.
Being 7' or over is great but the teams last night had bigs who really contributed. They are obstacles on D and rebound like demons.
None of those guys you mentioned were stellar athletes IMO.

In this era of basketball where you can body block on defense, it's harder for little guys to get past their defender, especially if he's tall. As long as your tall guys move their feet on defense, you can lock down. I agree with the OP.

The tall Europeans changed the template.

It was actually NIL money that indirectly changed the template. Because that’s the only reason all these tall skilled Europeans have invaded CBB the last few years. Most of these guys would’ve stayed in Europe before NIL.

But I agree that the template has changed. Teams are playing bigger lineups this year because there’s now a lot more bigs with the skills to play multiple positions.

This! Also, K retired right about the time the charge call was almost obsolete. Dude made a career off the flop/charge call. Disgusting!

Agree 1,000%! I only said "didn't win a title" because I was too lazy to go look up the record. I even forgot Morris also played with those 3. Thanks for the information. That was one horrible season even with multiple 7 footers.

Lee looked like he had a reasonable shot at going for a layup at the end of that Iowa game. It's crazy he tried to do that tough pass into traffic with hardly any time left.
That was the play call the “best coach in the country” drew up. Lmao Golden is a turd that caught lightning in a bottle with Clayton.

And telling his players to foul when they were up 2 as the clock was winding down. The national media went nuts on how Florida didn't even play a junior high level defense as Iowa was running up the court with NOBODY in front of them and nailed a wide open 3. That is some crappy coaching right there.
