I thought someone would have mentioned General Johnson by now considering our dance girls perform to his tune at every football game! He may not have been born in NC but lived in Charlotte for a long time. Terrible that a knee replacement caused his death.

Thank you for this thread!

-The O'Kaysions were from the Wilson and Kenly area. "Girl Watcher" was recorded in Greenville.

- Re: Little Eva - she was from Belhaven, I believe. She did live in Kinston later in her life.

Several big classic country artists not mentioned yet

Ronnie Milsap - Robbinsville
George Hamilton, IV - Winston-Salem (UNC alum)
Don Gibson - Shelby

And known more for his songwriting, Durham's own Don Schlitz (wrote The Gambler, and a bunch of other 70s and 80s country hits)

Shakin Sherman and The Blazers.

He was the Assistant Manager at the Record Bar on Franklin Street. This album cover was shot there.

I see several mentions of Randy Travis. RIP Durham native Don Schlitz. The only member of The Grand Ole Opry to ever be inducted for songwriting rather than performing.

I had just mentioned Schlitz a couple of posts above yours. My older son (UNC c/o '21) took a History of Country Music class a few years ago and Don was a guest lecturer for one of the classes.

RIP, Don

As a metal head I had to give a shout out to Charlotte’s Morbid Angel. They can shred.

That was great. I’m a Wilson boy and loved the O’Kaysions on local AM radio, but didn’t know that video existed. Thanks.

Connells at Cat's Cradle back in college circa 91-92 was loudest concert I've ever been to and I've been to far to many in my lifetime.
Do you remember seeing Ween at Cats Cradle during that same time span? I have it on vinyl but it would have been better to be there.

Has anyone mentioned Tori Amos? Great singer songwriter born at old Catawba Hospital in 1962.
