K. Flemmings , the PG i was wishing UK would get and turned out to be so good at Houston, was a 4 star.

Jasper Johnson is not your typical 25-55th type ranking 4 star, he was much much worse . We'd have been better off going after players ranked 25th-55th than going after the 5 stars since all the 5 stars said get lost to Pope

If a four star goes to the right coaching staff they can become a great college basketball player just like anyone else in college basketball. If Pope is going to keep struggling with recruiting, one of the best things he can do is hire a coaching staff that’s great with player development.

Honestly you recruit them for depth positions. If you’re recruiting them to be in your 8 man rotation in year 1 you ought to be VERY confident in their fit

I do not like recruiting from the OTE pool… it’s like aau for grown *** men. I would like Jasper to give it another go and play his true position, maybe he would start to shine

Why should we bring in a 4-star to develop? We can hire a former 4-star who some other coach already developed. Even if we do develop them, when they are good enough, they will leave for better pay (see Dioubate and Aberdeen).

Best case scenario with a freshman is that they are able to contribute enough to get a bigger payday going into their second year. Very few do which is why the hit the portal. Lots of teams out there that recruited the kid just 6 months ago that are looking to make a splash with their cash. Your phenoms are going to be leaving for the NBA after one year (one could argue they lack the ability to lead a team to win a national championship) so I think best case scenario is that you could retain 25% of your freshmen past their Sophomore year (maybe less than that).

They aren’t good enough to have an impact first year. They get mad on the bench like Jasper and then transfer.

giant waste of NIL money time and resources. Someone make sense of that.
If anything I think picking up some 4-star level guys each year is a good way to pad your roster with cheap players, and if you're a good talent evaluator you should be able to find guys who can contribute right away, or have a high ceiling to grow into. Continuity still matters, you can't expect consistency as a program by re-stocking the roster each offseason.

It’s not so much about the number of stars by a player’s name, rather the coach whose responsibility it is to put those players together and make a cohesive, well oiled machine, that plays to one another’s strengths!

See Pitino’s early teams, and this current Iowa State team for perfect examples of how it works.

4 stars make impacts all the time. players come from many sources, the key is TALENT EVALUATION and then getting them to sign if its the guy you want
Yep...recruit and develop to your system. Sampson and Hurley are doing that well. UConn is very selective on offers and stick around for the most part.

There are 15 total 5 stars per class. When you go 0-15 on 5 stars, who is left to recruit? Does anyone honestly expect a 5 star to fill out roster positions 10-15 and play cigar minutes? Does anyone expect top portal players who've developed to fill out roster spots 10-15? Not unless you want to pay 2 million for another JQ.

I suppose you could have said the same thing about 5 star players after Skal and Boston, but the truth is busts are the exception. JJ being totally out of his depth really shouldn’t affect who you go after.

Kingston Flemings, Keaton Wagler, Ebuka Okorie, Chance Mallory, all 4 Star guys last year who were top 10 Freshman. Then there were 3 star impact guys like Braden Frager as well. Plenty of elite talent was a 4 star that made an impact in year one.

I believe Condon and Haugh for Florida were both 3 stars. Chinyelu a 4 star. That’s who made Florida the team they were this year.

Ask Illinois if if they regret taking on ESPN 4-Star/#150 recruit Keaton Wagler (6'6" 180lb) and starting him as a Freshman. That development into a lottery pick took about 1 game!
