JJ with interesting comments about Journey in postgame

Just watched the postgame presser and couple things stood out. Most significantly were the comments about Journey. A reporter asked about her role and development and playing time. JJ said early in the year she wanted badly to play the 3 and be more on the perimeter. JJ explained to her that she didn’t have the ball handling skills (specifically with left hand) nor shot the ball well enough from the perimeter. Explained to her at this level players are faster and stronger and bigger. JJ told her it was either time at the 4 or nothing. Probably the most direct I’ve heard JJ talk about a players skill set and a bit of a disconnect.

Will be interesting to see how Journey develops over the summer. JJ said they need shooters and shot makers and it would be great if Journey developed that.

Today, Iowa needed Houston's rebounding and defense as Stremlow struggled in that regard.

Maybe I'm nuts, but isn't preventing the other team from scoring 2 points just as good as your team scoring 2 points?
What I've seen over the years at ALL levels of basketball is that there's a percentage of coaches that in any close game, they think you have to have your original "starting 5" on the court at the end.

Would be equally beneficial if we actually had an offense other than attacking the low post. Players stand with no movement off side screens and virtually no ball reversal. In tight games late when low post is taken away we are completely unorganized. Last 15 mins today was terrible.

I would argue all but the 10 min in the 3rd quarter were awful.

For the OP, put me on record of saying I wanted to see Stuelke, Houston and Heiden play at the same time.

Based on those comments it wouldn't surprise me if she leaves

Watching the movement of the Iowa men’s team against the Iowa women’s team offensively is absolutely jarring. It’s just stand around flash one big to the high post, pass it to her, hope she can pass it to the other big or put her head down and drive to the post, rinse and repeat. We needed someone like Journey in the game that could hit that 15 foot jumper. Ava can do it but she was getting swarmed and had no help.

A 5’11” player at the 4 position? Lol yeah that’ll get them far.

And by “far” I mean 40-pointed by the UCLA’s of the world.

5’11” at the point guard position and then taller and taller as the position numbers go up.

Journey Houston seems to be in the right place at the right time, a lot. I don't know what her shooting % ended up on the year, but I liked that she wasn't afraid to take the shot.

She's a really good basketball player, will get in there and mix it up, but size matters and she needs to find her place based on that.

Deal should have played a lot more, if not started. At Iowa you play a 5 star recruit.
Seems like Jan gave her two chances to start then that was it. I don't think she will have a ton of portal interest, but I do think she starts next season. Unless Jan made her mad with playing time I think she stays,

I am very curious to see how Addie reacts to what I’m sure she views as a disappointing season. I believe she envisioned more success. Will this be a motivational, learning experience where she commits and strives to improve her game in the off season? Or will she look for a new start in another program? I sure hope she decides the former. I still really believe she can be an impactful player for the Hawkeyes as early as next season.

I would think for Deal, she is most likely staying put for her career. Her parents picked up, moved from California to Iowa, bought a house and settled in. Of course they could sell there house and move again, but most likely they committed to be a Hawkeye the next 3-4 years

I suggest at practice every player on the team makes 25 FT in a row or they all run sprints until they do

Yes she probably gets a nice NIL package. And after her performane this year. Nobodys going to be offering much for her skills. I hope she progresses I truly do. But she did not impress.

Iowa's struggle against Virginia defensively was letting them dribble out the shot clock and then hunt for 3s so that they could erase a 9 pt deficit in the 4th...............

If Journey Houston could've impacted thay aspect of the game, then she should've been in there.

It’s all about trust. Coaches at crunch time will play who they trust the most regardless how they are playing at the time I believe.
It's akin to pulling a starter/middle reliever for a closer and hoping you didn't pull them to early, if you should've pulled them at all.

I'm sure the statistics say when to do it and whatnot, but whenever I watch that f***ing sport, more often than not it blows up in the manager's face.

This is what happens to coaches who have "too much" trust in a very small rotation.

Jan (and her staff, we need to point them out too) can't coach up guards.
