Moreno quote after the game:

“There’s a lot of thoughts in my head. I’m still trying to process what’s going on, what happened today. I’m extremely upset that this is the last time I get to wear this jersey with this team, but I feel like after a couple days — it will be a couple days to process it with my family and just go through the talks, and we’ll make a decision from there.”

Looks like he plans to do the NBA or transfer. Looks like he may not be back after all. But we will have to see.

How do you feel about that quote?

NBA, GTFO, he was solid, though would get eaten alive in the league, he’s a good two years away from being a consistent impactful player.

Could mean what you say, but I honestly just think he was talking about this specific assemblage of guys. Oweh and Aberdeen ain't coming back.

If he does leave, though, I wouldn't be surprised.
Right. On the surface it could mean he's leaving, but he could mean something else. Just passing along info, and seeing how others take it, is all.

Would you stay for Pope next year or take $1mil to play at almost 30 better positioned programs? He could go to Duke to be a backup center or he could go be an important starter for some rebuilding program like Syracuse. Heck even a star on a mid-major like VCU.

Unless something drastic is changed, were gonna be so bad next year lol.. but if thats the case, im gonna enjoy rooting against Pope as maybe one of the worst coaching hires in sports over the last 25 years. It wont be hard to boo him. The guy should honestly negotiate a buy out if he really loves this program as much as he says.

That sounds like he meant this team specifically like others stated. I don't expect him at UK next year tho. We can get a better big. Would be nice if he stayed but I won't be that upset or mad at him.

Can we really blame any player that wants to leave ?

I think he was just speaking about this group of players only.

That said, he needs to be recruited over. He has potential, but he can’t really get faster and that hampered him big time.

He needs to get stronger, develop better hands, learn how to rebound stronger, develop some passing, and some semblance of an outside game shooting the ball.

He plays like a 1980 big man, minus the strength and post skill to do it at an elite level yet. He would be a solid 15-20 mpg bench big man next year. If we rely on him to be a starter again we are cooked.

As much as I hate to say it, Pope is our Matt Doherty. The comparison is so glaringly similar. UNC figured it out and moved on, hopefully our new administration will as well.

I do hope Moreno stays though. He has so much potential with a little more strength.

Could mean the last time he suits up with this particular group of guys. Could be he wants to test the NBA draft or transfer. Guess we'll have to wait and see. He definitely needs to get stronger. Gets pushed around way too easily and loses a lot of rebounds due to his weak hands.

I don’t think it means anything, but he isn’t irreplaceable if he leaves. Love him, and hope he comes back but it isn’t a big deal. Much bigger issues at hand.

Negotiations with him could be wild, though I do expect him back.

He’ll want to be one of the highest paid bigs in college basketball even after ending the year with a thud. I do hope his atrocious performance down the stretch spares us from the testing the NBA drafter waters nonsense.

If it was just about this team....what talks and decisions would he need to make with his family?

I think it’s very telling how none of the bigs know how to play around the rim. No drop steps, spins, hooks, or quality shots. It obvious this is not being taught by this coaching staff as unbelievable as that sounds. He has to leave Pope’s program if he wants to develop the skills to be a better player. Also a coach that knows how to put weight and size on a player. Just look how other teams are better condition than UK which has to have everyone set out half the game to be able to finish.

But couldn't Matt Doherty actually recruit though?
I seriously doubt if he could. UNC was a big draw with the promise of free degrees, prestige, etc. His tenure at UNC was an utter disaster with only a second round appearance to his credit and missing the tournament the next 2 years. He also had a losing record his second year. In his entire coaching career, he only won 1 NCAA tourament game! In 6 seasons at SMU, he was 80-107! How did he ever coach for 11 years?

Glaringly similar to MD??? About the ONLY comparison is that neither lived up to expectations. Pope has made the tournament both seasons with less talent than UNC had by far. MD won 1 tournament game and missed the tournament his other 2 seasons. MD went 8-20 his second year and 19-16 his third year.

As we know, North Carolina was loaded and still collapsed under MD. UK has had 2 straight years of makeshift rosters and has at least gotten in the tournament and won 3 games. Not UK standards but better than MD by a mile.

He has ZERO chance of going to the NBA. Maybe muscle up and learn how to score around the basket.
I agree with this^^^. And like someone said above, he would most likely be a D - League level player for awhile. It would be better for him to spend a couple more years in college and get paid by the highest bidder and work on his game and strength.

Needs desperately to work on his hands and strength. Should make a huge difference next year if he's back. Can't juggle rebounds and expect to win.

also develop a mid range game inside the 3 point arc that's why the lane is clogged, dribble to the basket and post moves.

Do you blame him, the way half the fans tore him a new one and trashed him every time he played, I would leave too. Go some where and be appreciated. Some of the people on social media surely are not true UK fans.

Yeah in context that means Oweh, Aberdeen, etc. and has zero bearing on anything else. Not that I’d particularly wish Pope’s third year on Moreno or anyone else at this point…

His two-game performance in the tournament (WHEN IT REALLY COUNTS) is all I needed to see. I don't care about a last-second shot at LSU during the regular season, etc, he was absolutely AWFUL when it mattered most. Hope he bounces out

I'd love him to stay if they will allow sticky tape on the hands for the coming year.

I think some of you are knee jerk about this after a loss

We need a solid 10-12 players that we can afford. Moreno is going to be wanted by many teams. If they see value in him, so should UK.
I know we’re not getting a new coach. But if we did MM would be a guy he’d want to keep.

Could care less if Moreno returns. Had some sound games during the season, but folded like a chair during the NCAA games. Not sure comparison to other UK bigs, but Marvin Stone comes to mind in that both are slow, plodding but some sound fundamentals.
